I know the core rulebook goes on sale at the open of GenCon on Thursday morning. However, there was talk a while back that the devs may ration out how many copies will be available each day and I am wondering if a decision has been made on that yet? Will the core rulebook be rationed or just remain a first come first served free for all? I prefer the free for all, personally.

When you stop by the booth, ask them.
Basically it goes like this: I am short on money this year and if my chances are decent that if I show up to the con at open on Thursday that I have a decent chance at getting a copy then I am making the trip from Ohio to try. If my chances are bad then I won't bother. This is why if they decide to ration the book then I probably won't try.

If that was the case, I would still talk to them. Tell them you drove several hours because you were afraid they would run out. You weren't sure if they were going to ration or not. Explain you only have enough money to make one trip this weekend and you were really counting on getting the book on Thursday.
I'm not Paizo, but I'd be hard pressed not to take your money and give you a book, especially under those circumstances. But you should explain it to them and be sincere.
All that being said, I haven't heard a thing about rationing other than they were thinking about it, and on in the most tenative way.

They had said on the boards they were going to talk about it and maybe ration the amount sold each day so copies might be around for the weekend folks. I am going Saturday so I was hoping that was the case. They never came back and said one way or another. So, at this point I think your just taking your chances. We were lucky to be able to get one copy from a local store. We have to go pick it up tomorrow. We might also be able to grab a few more copies if they have extra that aren't pre-ordered. Anyway, I would have liked to have heard from the guys at Paizo if they were indeed going to ration them, but we didn't.

My suggestion, if money is really tight, is to not go. Instead purchase the pdf for $9.99 and order the book from Amazon and get free shipping. That way you can get the book in pdf form quickly, while you wait till your Amazon order comes in (which may be some time possibly). You might even save yourself a few bucks (not even counting the gas). And you will end up with a book and a pdf. Just something to think about.

If you're close enough to drive, I think the convention should be worth your while regardless. And I strongly doubt that they'll be running out the first day.
I expect they'll be reserving some for the people who only come for Saturday, and they may be doing a one-per-customer deal where they punch your badge, so you can get a copy for yourself but not five for your friends who couldn't come with you to the con (and who possibly live on ebay).
It's guesswork at this point. I don't know how many books they have on hand for the convention, but I expect they'll have kept enough to at least have most people reasonably pleased.
