From EN World's news page: "Gail Gygax will appear before Lake Geneva Parks Committee regarding placement of a statue of her late husband, E. Gary Gygax in Library Park in Lake Geneva, Wi. She will be contacting individuals in the film, computer and gaming industry to help with the project. "Gary gave millions of men and woman a reason to open a book - I discussed my desire for the statue with Gary just before he passed - he was pleased. I hope I can make the project a reality."
I say, only if they trap the base of the statue! :P

^_^ A howling mouth with a sphere of annihilation would do wonders, eh?

Yes, but only if those who disarm the trap are rewarded by finding a secret compartment at the base of the statue that contains a six-pack of Mountain Dew, a coupon for a free pizza, and an autographed collection of Gord the Rogue.

Be careful of what you read in the newspapers,it is not always the truth of what is really happening
Caution is always the best route when there are more falsehoods than paths to follow
At least FOX News won't lie to me!
As for the statue, I wonder if they'll sculpt it just of him, or with some sort of D&D related prop, like a book, dice or GM screen.

Googling a bit easily shows that this is reported outside the gaming community as well, so I think that this will probably be true. And, hey, why not? D&D has had quite an impact, especially if you think about what followed. Games like WoW would not exist without D&D, they had some memorial update when EGG died IIRC. They should incorporate him similar to Caine in Diablo - a virtual memorial.

I hope they make a statue of him smiling. He had a magical smile, full of life and humour. He smiled like Hotei. If a sculptor could catch that smile, it would be a great statue to have in any park.
If funding is a problem, they could offset the cost by making a limited issue bust available for geek dens everywhere.
He should be holding a globe of Greyhawk (Oerth), and smiling.

Heck, I'd buy one!

Hell, I'd buy a bust too, I'd even just donate. Gygax created something beyond just "special" when he created D&D. That man never harmed anyone with what he brought to the world, and in fact, made thousands, if not millions of people's lives much much more bearable.
He's one of the few people in this world that I would actually agree deserves a statue commemorating his life and achievements.
Most statues tend to be of national leaders, and honestly, national leaders DON'T deserve that, at least not in my opinion. Damn despots, every single one of them, despite their claimed purpose, whether they believe it or not.

The game does advocate killing people and taking their stuff. A process rewarded with Experience Points. So its Destructive influence is deeper and more subtle, perhaps even Mordenkainen-like.

Yeah, and the player's handbook has an adventure in it that gives you more experience the more times you stab the sleeping king.
The argument that D&D encourages violence in the real world has no basis. Anyone that has ever committed "D&D violence" has always had a history of mental problems before they ever even started playing the game.

I took this from the "Thief Thread" - It reminded me of Mr. Gygax.
And, on this night I pray:
Even though large tracts of our game and many old and famous class titles have fallen or may fall into the grip of the wotc and all the odious apparatus of their rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in chatrooms, we shall fight on the blogs and boards, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the light, we shall defend our Game, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this great role playing game or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our fellow gamers beyond the American borders, armed and guarded by the internet protocols would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New Pathfinder RPG, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

If I had been drinking milk just now, it would be coming out of my nose.

It's being worked on. It's a process, and funding/planning for it requires following a legal process. From what I understand, it gets approved by the Parks committee, then after that it has to go before the city council. I know some fund raising is planned in 2010 at GenCon.
