Warcraft the Movie: Who is Bruce "Don't Call Me Ashe" Campbell going to play?

Sam Raimi to direct Warcraft movie

Will Blizzard succeed where WotC couldn't and make a movie that doesn't suck?

EDIT: Oops, it helps if you actually put the url in. :D

Hey Pres, the link just brings me back here.

The Exchange

Well, I'm interested - the D&D movies were always cheapo knock-offs whereas I would anticipate that not to be the case if the have Raimi on board. I'm a bit trepidatious (if that's a word) of the "live action" tag, though - while probably cheaper, quicker to produce and with broader appeal than a cartoon of similar scope, I wonder how well they can pull that off in a world that has only ever been represented by computer graphics, and with a large number of non-humans in the mix. And I hope they have a decent plot.

(I wonder if any of the characters will have glowing yellow exclamation marks over their heads? "So, how did you know I needed help?")

Has a good movie ever come from a video game?

I don't think so but I'm going to wait for a midnight screening if they have one I like to think blizzard wouldn't screw this up I hope.

Or from a roleplaying game either - the precedents are not good.

Maybe that double negative thing will kick in...

The Exchange

Live huh? Too bad, they really should just do it in CG. I mean when I saw the trailer for Wrath of the Lich King I was thinking, 'Holy crap what an awesome movie they could make with this'.

I think live action will produce a lesser quality film that will, ultimatly be disappointing.

I mean, with Rami I'm sure it will be a decent film, just not what it could be.

I think it's obvious who Bruce Campbell is going to play--he's got the jaw and the voice down cold for Richard.

So it will be twice as bad as we feared?

Yeah, that's my take - the trailer movies for WoW are getting better and better, and I'm not sure that live action will look right. Live action Thunder Bluff, for example, could look total crap. Live action Tauren, too - they're about 10' tall. Man in suit v CGI.

That said, I would be surprised if I didn't go and see it anyway.

It does not matter how bad or good it might be - the millions of Warcraft fans guarantee success. If only every tenth fan sees the movie, it will do fantastic, I guess. (At least, that is the perpective I would have as producer here).

Can't argue with that...

So far, the best Warcraft "movie" i saw was the Southpark special episode...
Mainly because of the voices which were cracking me up :D

Liberty's Edge

From Blizz's comments, the storyline will take place prior to the events in the World of Warcraft game and possibly before the events of Warcraft 3. The only other thing that they've commented on is that the protagonist of the story will be a human.

Damn Alliance scum!

Not many. But for entertaining popcorn flicks Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Mortal Kombat were all pretty good movies.

Sovereign Court

Not a Lara Croft fan then?

Anyway, I'm slightly optimistic about this movie. Blizzard has been very careful in the past about protecting their image. As long as they don't let the director do any crying loser/hero scenes, it should be a blockbuster.

I agree with Mortal Kombat, haven't seen the other two. I found Street Fighter to be entertaining, if a bit on the kooky side.

Nah, I think I decided that he'll end up playing LeeRoy Jenkins!

And he better have chicken!

I expect the movie will have the occasional shout "LFG" and will have at least one scene of a crowd of gnomes and minotaurs dancing in their underweat for money.

The Exchange

In fact, I'm not too pessimistic about it. Apart from del Toro and Peter Jackson he's probably the one I have the most trust in that he doesn't make it suck.

But I'm part of the fanbase so as long as they put "warcraft" in the title I'm probably in.

Silver Crusade

I can't wait for the part where the hero struggles for 20 minutes to assemble a pick up group, and then they finally start a dungeon when the healer up and says "Oops! GTG!"

;)

Videogame movies use to suffer from the same syndrome as videogame anime, both cases pick games with a great story and then make a movie/anime that either has -nothing to do- with such great stories (Samurai Showdown), or that are carried on in such a -lame- way that fans want -nothing to do with it- (Doom).

On the other side, any high-risk movie project does well in turning to mr. Evil Dead, Sam Raimi, at least that guarantees the movie will be either "good", or "so BAD it's GREAT", either way I'll enjoy the movie.

Don't tempt Raimi, he actually might. =P

Don't forget Rami has experience dealing with sword and sorcery shows. He did The legend of the Seeker based on Goodkinds sword of truth novels (and were nothing like said books)... He did Hercules and Xena.... So yea.... I like Sam, I do, and I do like the aforementioned shows, but at the same time.... Blockbuster WoW movie is kinda sceptical. I hope I'm wrong and it rocks hard.

That´s the reason why I think the movie will be a success no matter what. I guess many folks think like this. (I won´t touch WoW with gloves and coal tongs myself, as I know that I´m very susceptible to its addictive nature, and would spend days playing it - I have to be careful about addictive stuff anyway.)

Oops! How could I forget? Not great but good as well. Have both on DVD. Add that to my list.

I wouldn't bet on this just being successful on the basis of it being Warcraft. You've got to consider, how many of the people that play Warcraft actually care about the brand and storyline and stuff and how many just play it because it's a good game. Many people probably wouldn't care about a movie. I may be wrong, though.
