So, anybody else go on a HPB crawl on 50% coupon Sunday?

Here in the DFW area, gamers were crawling all over the 3.5 books at every store I went to (NW Hwy, Preston, Airport, Cedar Hill). The FR fans seemed especially rabid. And to the guy in front of me who took the last Book of Exalted Deeds, you will pay!

Really? Nobody?

I hit mine and picked up The Five Nations. I am thinking of dropping my current dimensional hoping Mutants & Masterminds PCs into Eberron for a romp. Perhaps an aerial battle betwixt the towers of Sharn.

Yeah, I've been seeing lots of Eberron stuff there in recent months, which was kind of tempting me to branch out. It would have been nice if I had at least had time to sit down and look at them.

I was in a big rush, as I was swinging through them so I was not at all social, but I kept wondering if I was among virtual friends as I grabbed up my spoils. Plus, they were all a mad house. I did steer one of the clerks towards Paizo, however. Nice guy.

The one in Round Rock was no more busy than usual for a Sunday afternoon.

There were some Mutants & Masterminds books too. Unfortunately, they were all first edition.

My daughter got a mini world atlas. She wanted to see where Galveston, Texas was and thought the Nepalese flag was amusing.

Is your daughter a big fan of Galveston? How old is she?

Last week was the first time she has been there. She is six.

Heh-heh. I bet she had fun. My daughter adored Galveston as a kid.

Moody Gardens had a whole Dinosaurs theme going on. She loves Dinosaurs.

If it's the same lame looking dinos they had a few years ago, then I envy her age protecting her -- it's the only thing I remember seeing at Moody Gardens that I was disappointed in. It's a great place to draw game inspiration as well.

Glad to hear kiddos still love dinosaurs. Have you ever taken her to the museum in Houston?

Bummer, I missed this one. I heard nothing about it. The Frisco store did not look packed when I drove by it either.

Damn Texans...

Sighvat, I recommend next time you drive by, stop in and fill out a mailing list card. You'll get coupon/announcements by email and/or by US post, as desired, and you won't miss another sale. Of course, next time you'll be the guy in front of me nabbing the last BoED, so I don't know why I'm doing this...

;)

CJ, face it. It's awesome being a Texan.

Actually, I was rather disappointed in the Dinoride. I think this is only the third time she has been outside of the Austin area. Given her attention span, I never considered taking her to a museum.

I am ignorant of the Dinoride. I was thinking of what used to be the Museum of Natural History in Houston, with all its dino skeletons and fossils. I loved those as a kid.

You know I read this as "My daughter adoired Galvetron as a kid."

Galvatron was messed up even as a kid. I forbade her from playing with him. I feel the events have proved me right.

I moved away from Dallas a couple years back to a smaller city. The thing I miss the most is half-priced books. I love that place. Oh and Game Chest and Lone Star Comics and...

I use to live in Bastrop. We had to drive an hour into Austin to see a movie. I liked 'small town' life, but I like the convenience of a 'big' city too much.

Let's see, how many of those places have I been to in the past couple of weeks...

Do they let you leaf through the comic books?

Haven't gotten back into comic books, unless you're counting graphic novels. I don't branch out much beyond my gaming habit and good ol' fantasy lit. And DFW is really a good area to cultivate such habits. Convenient, as has been said, and economic.

Also been trying to throw a little support to a new store, Xmax Games on Skillman Ave, but the owner doesn't seem interested in supporting my edition. Anybody Dallas folks been in there?

I went to the Alamo.

And the person who beat Hank Hill out of Texan of the Year is...Heathansson!

Liberty's Edge

They had (one of) Davy Crockett's actual dang rifles.

Sovereign Court

Does half-priced literally mean they are half-priced?

Sorry if this has been asked before?

Pax Veritas wrote:

For the most part. Used books are sold at half the MSRP printed on the book. They also sell some new books (generally overstocks) at a discount less than 50% off.

I went to school with a kid who was descended from Davey. And I love Texas. But there's no way I'd go to the Alamo on HPB 50% off Sunday. I hope you were doing this for children, Heathy. ;)

Yeah, Pax, as Joana said, generally 50% off, sometimes more on the remainders, sometimes less on books in high demand. Is this your very roundabout way of asking what all I scored? :P

Actually, the question was indeed literal. However, now that you mention it, M., what did you score?

Ah. Well, I'm sure the question was there, unconsciously, deep-deep down. Because I surely wouldn't project such a question out of some childish, show-n-tell need...

Spoiler:

Monsters of Faerun (actually got that on 40% off day)

Complete Scoundrel
Complete Warrior
Rules Compendium
Secret College of Necromancy
Book of Vile Darkness (but only because the guy in front of me bought the last Book of Exalted Deeds)

No support? Bah! You should try playing something really fringe, like Hero.

And I'd want to do that because...?

Seriously, though, I half expected a bunch of people from the boards to say they had been passing through those same stores. I guess the 3.5 fan world is bigger than these boards. Nah, I'll just believe that folks are shy.

Send some good used bookstores up our way! Or at least stop bragging about yours!

(Damn Mairkurion!)

I'll see what I can do about the first, the second is unlikely though.

It's actually getting to be about time for another 'Half-Priced Books and other used book stores of the Greater Houston area tour'. Takes me two days to do it. Extra fun because I do it on my Harley. :-)

YEE

HAW!

The bookstores at night, are big and bright!

<clap> <clap> <clap>

Seriously though, CJ, I remember their bein' a great used bookstore, which was almost Texas big. (Can't remember the name of it.) Do they not carry game stuff?

If not, just remember the Texas oath: Every person has the right to make their children Texans. (Just don't be the guy in front of me who grabs the last BoED. Had "Yankee" written all over 'im.)

Ha! That's funny. I do the same thing everytime I go to a city with Half-Priced Books stores. I did it regularly in the DFW area when I lived there. Ah, those make for sweet vacations. =)

Somehow the words "in Philly" fell out of Big Tex's post above, which was aimed at helping/torturing CJ. Damn me, er, him. And Texans in general. And our wonderful book collections. And stores. And plentiful parking. And hot girls. And...

Yes damn us. Damn us, indeed.

Liberty's Edge

I had a chance to go to Austin this past week and I was able to squeak in some time to get my Half-Price Books fix in Cedar Park on the way out of town. It was so refreshing. It's been a long dry spell.

How do I love thee, Half-Price Books? Let me count the ways... $1, $2, $3...

Sweet. Hope you scored lots of stuff. I picked up the first volume of Mouseguard there last night.

Liberty's Edge

I did! They had a sweet gaming section. I just wish I'd had more money, I need to line my last free wall with bookshelves )

20% off this weekend.

Yeah...maybe I'll stop by the Irving store today, on the way home from class.

Arcane Magic and Magic of Faerun were found at HPB in Irving!
Is Freakin' Sean K Reynolds' name on every FR book? ;)

Also went to buy 40% minis at Borders. If anybody is having trouble finding a copy of the PfRpG Core Rulebook, I saw it at the Lovers Lane Borders, and if they are a Borders Rewards member, they could use their 40% coupon for a sweet deal. I was so excited when I saw that. I've seen Paizo products at B&N, but never at Borders, so YAY!

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:
Arcane Magic

I meant, Complete Arcane.

40% minis? I may have to check that out. I always need more innocent villagers to be obstructions. Unfortunately, a map full of Drunken Brawlers gets old.

You've got to have the membership and the coupon, just to be clear. The first Borders I went to gave me the "it says book, not item on the coupon" hassle, so I got no elder green dragon. The second one said "Ooo, these are neat, my husband plays D&D" and I got the remorhaz at 40% off.

The LE pack does have the "human rabble," if you want to vary yr villagers and don't mind one having a club.
