You can lead a cat to water... wait, you can't even do that.

Problem:
My cat threw up like eight times last night. We aren't giving him any more food because he would probably just throw up again. Since he lost so much water from throwing up, we are trying to get him to drink to keep him from getting dehydrated. He refuses to drink at all, and even shoving his face in the water dish didn't cause his instincts to make him drink (that works for birds and sheep). I theorized that giving him a little bit of salty food would make him thirsty, but if he didn't drink after that he might get even worse.

Please note that I only made a separate thread because I had this title in my head.

Take him to the vet, now! =(

Have to agree take him to the vet asap.

I concur. Take him to the vet.

I hope he gets better.

I concur, it's vet time.

In the meantime, you can squirt water into his throat with an eyedropper. It's how most medicines are administered. Make sure you're holding him good n' tight, though!

Ditto.

It sounds like the cat has some kind of stomach or intestinal problem and even delaying a day can result permanent or lethal damage to the cat.

For holding the wily bugger, I suggest twisting him up in a bath towel. I have to do that when I trim my little guy's mutant claw.

Factors:

We are low on money.
He is acting perfectly normal, except for wanting food and not drinking. He's perky and has clear eyes (he has an eye problem that makes them gummed up sometimes).
We need to make sure this is something we can't take care of at home before we take him to the vet.
Many of our other cats have had short spells of vomit in the 16 years we've had cats (like food poisoning, they last less than 24 hrs), and the only problem is it's hard to get him to drink. If you get food poisoning, do you go to the doctor? You throw up a bunch of times in the night, but later in the day, after eating some saltines and drinking liquids, you feel better.

We had a rabbit like that with outgrowing incisors. He had to be trimmed like every month. Not a fun experience. Then he got killed by (we think) the neighbor's dog.

OK, I understand your financial situation. That said... take him to the vet.

If that really isn't an option: can you give him some beef, chicken, or seafood broth (preferably a low sodium variety) either alone or mixed with his catfood? Warm it slightly (not hot) in the microwave so it's more fragrant.

For a short term thing. Try giving him tuna and leave the water on it, or oil if you don't have the water kind.

I know the feeling about having a sick cat and being broke. But if can call the vet and tell them what happened. Often times they will give you some advice on things you can try at home first. But if it last for more than 36 hours of no drinking you will need to just bite the bullet and take him to the vet. None of us can live long with out water.

He's drinking now. And not throwing up. :)

Yeah, I know that he would need to go to the vet if the condition lasted more than a day. I posted... like at 10 am, and he's been ok for about 2 hours or so. That's about 7 hours he went without drinking. Thanks everyone for the input!

Good to know the fella is doin' better.

Yay! Once he gets better, don't forget to spoil him rotten. :)

I'm happy to hear he's doing better.

Unless the cat got into something that s/he shouldn't have, I think everyone else here is right. You need to take your cat to the vet.

Cats don't usually throw up for no reason. If it's something serious, then the longer you wait, the less likely the vet will be able to do anything to help.

Did you take him to a vet yet?

Tensor wrote:

That was Sunday. Vets are closed.

You should probably see whether he's gotten better. He might have just eaten something bad. If he's better, than it was probably just food poisoning.

Not my experience at all. My last cat was such a puker, I think he did it sometimes for fun. Like, if I ever left a book on the floor - HUUUUURRRRK!!!

I have to agree with you Smee, my cat pukes for several reason, if his litter needs changed, but mostly since he has been spoiled rotten for the past 13 years, whenever he isn't getting enough attention.

And to the op hope the little fella is feeling better.

Crap, here comes Vomit Guy.

Gark, hope your cat gets better soon.

In my news, Kitty returned after not being seen for over a month.

any idea where kitty went?

She had to have found a place to have her kitties and be fed. Still, it amazed me that she had grown as much as she had. She must have just barely been able to get pregnant when she did. She was very affectionate, and was still of the opinion that she should be allowed to live in doors. What an effrontery to her feline honor! Still no kittens sighted.

Silver Crusade

That's the opposite of what what happened to my friend's cat. She jumped off the balcony and ran away, and was not seen for about two months. One day, they find her sitting by the door and wanting to be let in. Lo and behold, she got pregnant, and decided that my friend's apartment would be the perfect place to have her kittens.

Sovereign Court

My current cat is a long hair and she does puke from time to time. Usually it is in response to an upcoming hairball (and what fun that is). Fortunately (I suppose) she has taken to yakking up her hairballs in the bathtub.

My first cat was a nut ... of course she was named Azathoth, so that my have had something to do with it. She decided she needed to get out of a second floor apartment and jumped out the living room window (taking out the screen in the process). After that, any time she wanted out, out the window she jumped, spreading her legs out and glided, much like a flying squirrel, over the hedges and onto the grass bank beyond them. She was a great cat and lived to the ripe old age of 16 before diabetes got the better of her abut 7 years ago.

Okay, I gotta ask. Did she use the screen as a glide platform, or what?

Nope. With the initial jump, she grabbed hold of the screen with her claws and rode that to the top of the shrubs. After that, since the screen was shot and the apartment complex maintenance dept sucked, there was no screen, so she spread her legs out, stretching the skin out like a flying squirrel, and was able to clear the shrubs without problem.

Hello? He's better. No more throw up. I've never had a cat who hasn't thrown up at least once. He's drinking now. No more worry.

It'd be interesting if a dog was out there "using" the grass. Cat lands on the ground (or even funnier, his back), and the dog goes running off.

She did face off to a Rottweiler once. Got up on her hind legs as it was running up and swatted the crap out of its nose. It stopped in its tracks and ran. I was freaking out while it was running up since I knew I would not be able to get there in time and laughing my ass off afterward. Guess the dog didn't know you should mess with one of the Old Ones ...

We have this chicken who once attacked a pit bull/boxer mix because he was too close to her chicks. She got all puffed up, and he hightailed back to the neighbor's place.*

*He actually was a big sweetie, but it sounds cooler if you think he's a killer.
