3rd Party Char Generators and internal Pathfinder Backwards Compatibility

General Discussion (Prerelease)

This question is for Paizoans, but of course every one is free to add their .02 cents.

I know 3rd Party Character Generators like HeroLab and RPGXplorer are their own deal, and Paizo doesn't have anything directly to do with them other than perhaps licensing. Paizo makes rules. They make software.

Okay.. that aside, I got to thinking today. The later Pathfinder Products have said to been aiming towards being compatible with the new rules as much as possible. In that respect, Chronicle products have been careful with crunchy game mechanics, so as many of those rules, traits, feats, as possible will be compatible with PF RPG.

Will there be any definitive word on what will be offically compatible with PF RPG, from the 3.5 books?

NOW.. If you come back and reply, "Whatever you feel comfortable with in your game," you'll be giving a semi-reasonable answer but missing the point.

Because, a third party software developer is going to have to code this stuff, and they're going to want to know what to include and what not to include.

For an example: Hero Labs gets a license to do a Pathfinder RPG Character Generator. Should that include the Low Templar Prestige Class (or any feat from the Campaign Setting Book, or traits from the Companion books)? Because they were written for 3.5...

...but with a mind towards PFRPG compatibility?

It becomes a question of how complete a product do they want to make and sell.

I guess I don't need an answer in this thread because it's a big question. However, I'm throwing the thought out there for consideration. Sooner or later, somebody is going to want to know what part of the 3.5 Transitionary Products (like the Companion books and the Campaign Setting) should be folded into PF RPG.

(Note: I'm not affiliated with any of the above companies, it was just a stray thought I had today)

Well for what its worth, here's my .02 cents. The question is both a lot easier and more complex then what you might think.

1. In terms of Wizards only the core books are in, no other mechanic class, skill power/spell or race, none.

2. Lot covered by #1 have a OGL version, such as replacment class ablites (which I don't like) and racial levels.

3. What can be in or out from all the 3pp would take a book itself. I still hope that some sort of conversion guidelines comeout in some form or another, but until then I think of lot of it falls back to whatever you want in.
