Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Scarab Sages

Quoted from the website I use to keep in touch with old military friends who are deployed/left the service ect.

This particular friend was part of our group back when 3rd edition was the new thing. It has been a long time since talking to him, and he has been enjoying 4th edition... however he had never heard of Pathfinder... this was his reaction!

Pathfinder!~

I downloaded the beta version of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Betatest and spent the last few hours “skimming” through the 410 pages… it reeks of quality, smells like adventure in the making. I am surprised and pleased at what I am seeing here. So those thousands of dollars I spent on 3rd Ed D&D isn’t going to waste? The release version of the book comes out in August so I won’t be printing out the beta version of the book. This gives me new and exciting options for running gaming groups while I travel. Namely to be able to easily run 3rd or 4th ed D&D without having to travel with 1000 pounds of gaming books. I think, Chuck, you are single-handedly responsible for thousands of dollars of lost revenue for Wizards of the Coast that I would have purchased. Don’t get me wrong, my 4th ed. books aren’t posted on E-bay, but I will seriously consider not getting many more 4th ed books since the quality of Pathfinder products really rings true for GAMERS not the mass population of people that might be gamers (4th ed’s intended demographic).

I absolutely enjoyed this to the extreme, and just had to share it. I think it summarizes many of the awesome things about this game, and has that sense of "Hey a new book!" we can all relate to.

Thanks Everyone at Paizo (to include the community!)

....and there was much rejoicing!

Glad that Paizo once again proved to be the choice and not the alternative.

When August gets here - things are going to fly out of stores etc like gangbusters!!!

I was in my local gaming store the other day to look for the free copy of the bestiary extra, and the gal behind the counter (whom I had never seen in there before) sat upright with attention the moment I asked about it - although they weren't lucky enough to have copies of it, she immediately began preaching her love and enthusiasm of the game and system and her anticipation of the actual release.

I noticed that all the PF stuff was on the "back" of the main aisle and all the 4th ed stuff was on the front - so it was the obviously seen product to those coming in the store. I commented this to her - which she said was the way things had to be per the owner but she'd switch it if she could. She went on to say that 4E still sells incredibly well, since they keep pumping out rehashed manuals every month that simply updates the same old material from previous editions (dragons, planes, etc).

She said that the three reasons why Pathfinder isnt' doing as well - 1) the location of the products, 2) most of the material is adventure/sourcebook stuff that is being subscribed to more than bought and 3) the core rules isn't released yet and so she thought all along all the material up there couldn't be used - since there was no sourcebook of rules released yet.

When I explained to her that everything that has been released so far (minus the BETA rules) is all 3.5 rules and is NOT converted to Pathfinder rules she was shocked and happy and said she would be sure to let all the 3.5 players know that they can buy the other stuff on the shelves and insert them to the game.

I explained it will be easy to do once PF-RPG is released too - but that future supplements will already be formated appropriately.

She stated she anticipates from the hype she's been hearing from the regulars that once the COre Rules is finally released in August - there's going to be a mad-rush to get it and Pathfinder products will be selling out all over the place!

Welcome, Charles, among the warm and loving fien... er, friends! You made the right choice with your faction, for there is no country or empire mightier than our beloved Cheliax! ;)

Welcome to the fold. Yea, even though I have a subscription to most of the Pathfinder stuff, I will be buying an extra copy of the rulebook and probably buying a copy for a friend. The extra copies will be bought at my FLGS, not online. If it were not for the snazzy Charter tag and the free PDFs, I probably would have gotten all my Paizo stuff through my FLGS.

Oh. I thought this thread was about someone having a baby.

Uhh ... congratulations, Charles.

Welcome, Charles! Lot's of great stuff going on here with a great community of people. Make yourself at home.

I didn't want to start my own thread for this, since it's just a hearty 'aye-aye' to the OP, but I'm in the same boat. I downloaded the beta 3 or 4 months ago, but hadn't really switched to it whole hog, as I had a long-standing 3.5 FR game going on.
Now that the players and I have decided to take a hiatus from that game (a group of 18-20th level that they've been playing off and on for years) I shared the beta with them and I've seen a level of excitement that my group hasn't had in years. The OP hit it on the head with the main reason: Pathfinder is of ridiculously high quality. I CANNOT wait to start the new group next weekend.

Always nice to see yet another convert!

It is good to have another PF enthusiast. What made me want to put down my 3.5 stuff and start PF3.5 was the scaling of the feats and the new class powers and special abilities.

The top 3 of these were:

1) Sorcerer bloodlines
2) Cleric Domain powers
3) Feats every odd level

I currently am playing a monk in the Second Darkness AP, and have never had as much fun. The Ki-power pool is so awsome.

Anyway, I hope your friend has as much fun as I have had.

From what I understand (and much to my displeasure) he is interested in the Paladin.

Horrible, Horrible, evil-outsider-smiting paladins...

Probably going to get some more reactions from people to post here, have quite a few friends I've been feeding Pathfinder stuff to who are in Iraq currently, I think they will be as excited.

Yes Oblivisci,

the Paladin is the class that I am most excited about. Truly, you get fingered you are dead meat!

We Candlekeepers need to stick together. Maybe a CK Alias?

Maybe you could "upgrade" the "title" part? LordErrantJR? Duke Candlekeep? How would these sound? ;)

Hey there, Asgetrion and Ashe! Good to see other CK-ers here. I can't imagine ever abandoning the Realms entirely... but this Golarion stuff is pretty sweet. I (and my group) are SUPER excited to kick off the new game.

So, (again, to avoid a new thread) a n00b question: What PF products, in which order, would you get to DM a Golarion adventure with (say) a $100 budget? I have all the free stuff, and now need to start spending my filthy luchre. Would I be wise to get a subscription? if so, what level? Sorry to derail the thread a bit, but since I know a few of you posting on this thread, I'd like to get your (and anyone elses') feedback.

I'm partial to the adventure paths, so I would get a subscription starting with adventure path #25 (which starts in august and will be Pathfinder RPG rules instead of 3.5). You get 30% off the cover price and a free pdf for subscribing so that's a good way to stretch out your budget. Then, if you feel you can afford it, get the Campaign Setting Guide (which you will get 15% off of the price due to being an adventure path subscriber).

I'd agree with this - though gauge yourself and your players - if another path would be better you could buy up those. Council of Thieves seems similar enough to Curse of the Crimson Throne (not *that* similar, but city-based), but Rise of the Runelords and Second Darkness (which I run both of) are tons of fun. Legacy of Fire looks awesome as well.

Can also do the Gazetteer instead of Campaign Setting - though I think the CS is worth it.

Well, let's see what's on ol' Ashe's bookshelf at the moment:

Yep, Adventure Path subscription. Oh and the Campaign Setting book. Plus the Beta Platest book.

To stretch the $100 bucks the furthest, I'd say get the AP subscription first. You can start it right now and get the final chapter in the Legacy of Fire series or wait a couple of weeks and start the Council of Thieves.

After you get the AP, the Campaign Setting book will cost $42.49 (after the AP 15% discount) plus S&H. I do heartily support buying directly from Paizo whenever possible since they truly deserve the money, but having been bitten by the 'Budget Bug' a few months back, I do have to point out that Amazon has it on sale for $31.49 and it automatically qualifies for free shipping. But the Campaign Setting is *required* for the simple reason that it has:

After that, save up some of your money for the RPG rules coming out in 6 weeks. Again, with that I'd recommend the budget-conscious to go Amazon ($31.49 + free shipping, again), and get the PDF for immediate consumption at the AP discounted price of $8.50.

So, let's see... $62.98 for the Chronicles and RPG rules plus about $19 for the AP subscription. $100 - $81.98 = $18.02. Just about enough left over to get one of the nice Dice sets designed for the APs!

If you find yourself with some extra cash and are an Elaine Cunningham fan, pick up the Legacy of Fire series most definitely as well.

Thanks for all the feedback guys... I think I'll take the advice and subscribe to the AP in a few weeks (to start the new adventure path) and get the CS book and PDF. Buying the hard copy off of Amazon is almost too tempting, especially as I have a credit there for about $40, so it would actually be 'free', despite my desire to order direct from Paizo when possible. Speaking of which, if I subscribe and pre-order the Ruleset, I would qualify for a discount to that, right? Right. So that's the plan then. Thanks again, folks!

If you subscribe to the Pathfinder AP line, then you recieve a 15% discount on almost everything. NOTE, discounts DO NOT stack. However, that would give you 15% off both the PF RPG hard cover rulebook and the PF RPG PDF. IMHO, it is well worth subscribing.

P.S. - Plus, you recieve a free PDF to most of what you subscribe to.

You receive the 15% Pathfinder Advantage discount on all products except non-Paizo pdfs after the first issue of Pathfinder AP has shipped. So if you sign up for a sub and then order the CS or the RPG before PF25 ships, you won't see a discount on them. If they are all on the same order, I think you would, but I'd need confirmation from someone at Paizo on that. In any case, you can subscribe to both the RPG line and the AP for free pdfs when the hard copies ship, but the CS no longer has a free pdf. You can buy the pdf and the hard copy individually, though.
