OR, Portland - Pathfinder Society gaming?

Gamer Connection

Hi all,
I made the following post on the Portland RPG Meetup site:
link

Boils down to, "is anybody in Portland/Vancouver interested in PFS gaming?" I'd be up for running the occasional PFS game for folks interested in advancing their characters in the Society. Also wouldn't mind getting a little "organized" with other DMs to the extent of maybe getting several of us together somewhere like Guardian Games on a particular night to all run PFS sessions and promoting it to attract new players to PFS/Pathfinder RPG.

So. Anyone?
M

Liberty's Edge

Sorry... if it wasn't a 1 1/2 hour drive, I'd love to play.

Hey, no problem. I didn't get any response over at meetup either. I figured there'd be at least a few folks around here that were interested in playing Pathfinder Society (I see plenty of "I need a DM" posts on meetup) but I guess not so much :)

It's an open offer. Pathfinder DMs or players feel free to get in touch and we'll see if we can get it going.

Yeah, Oregon seems to be dead of gamers looking for groups.

Liberty's Edge

I can't make it to Portland but, if any Astoria-area gamers check out your post, I'm interested in a Pathfinder game out here. They can respond at this thread.

I'm in the area, what sorts of schedule are you looking for?

Nothing intensive. I was just thinking maybe we could get some DMs and players together on a semi-regular basis (maybe at Guardian games one or two days a month) to get Pathfinder Society going in Portland.

I can scrounge up maybe a player or two from the people I know personally - but I've had zero luck via meetup and this site so far. I imagine, with a small bit of promotion, that a few players/dms could be attracted once it something got going.

Have you tried posting a note?

Sovereign Court

I live 45 mins./1 hour away. (In Kelso, WA). I would be willing to make the drive. Count me in!

At the store, you mean? No...hadn't gotten that far. Figured I'd try virtual organization first. I'm not much of an organizer but figured I'd see if anyone's interested.

M

Interesting store, at an interesting location. I would be interested in trying a game at the store. I'm available fri and sat.

Scarab Sages

I see many posts, but am clueless how to respond to people on this board. Other than the obvious: posting a reply. How do I contact any of you?

Hey,
Yeah...no PMs on this board. How about this: anybody interested in maybe getting together (probably irregularly at first) for some PFS gaming shoot me an e-mail at michaela at acaciarg dot com. Please let me know your interest level (from "kinda sorta" to "will make it rain or shine") and whether you're already playing PFS, etc.

If we can get four or five folks in the loop we can try to put together a game down at Guardian Games. I have at least one of my players that would probably join as a player, maybe two. I would like to see it eventually evolve into a monthly (maybe more) sort of thing with multiple tables going. Just a fantasy...because I'd like to see Pathfinder/Paizo continue to prosper.

If we got this rolling before the end of season zero I guess we'd need to see what happens when the rules switch to Pathfinder RPG. I've subscribed to it but I'm not sure if you can use the old scenarios and whether/how characters convert yet. Will try to read up on it.
M

I would definitely try to make it if I could. Just name the day and time and game. I might suggest trying a Pazio adventure path to start.

Heya,
Sorry if I was unclear. I was specifically talking about Pathfinder Society play, Paizo's organized play system. Does that change your mind about joining up?

I'm willing to make the drive from Eugene once a month or so. Likely would run one, play one if I did.

No, that's sounds fun as well. Count me in, just name the time and day (fri or sat). I will assume the location is Guardian Games.

Wow. Eugene, huh? That's a longish drive. :)

Okay, well, I'd think a Saturday would work best for me and it sounds like for at least one other person. Let me check with my possible players to see which one might work for them and see how the Guardian calendar works and we can schedule a game (or even two, to make it worth Russ' while) for a Saturday later in July? Maybe the 31st? [edit: removed the 24th...looks like I'll be in LA that weekend]
M

Hmm, guess I can't edit the post again. I guess I made another mistake...the 31st is a Friday. Saturday is the 1st. So, let me know if anyone can make that date (roughly 12pm-4pm) and I'll get it on the local meetup calendar and the GG calendar.

I'll be getting back to you after August, I'm booked solid through Labor Day with cons, camping, and family :P

I would suggest the following, just post a time/day here and at the store. Then just show up and see who is there. I can bring 1 other and we are both free on Saturdays. Trying to coordinate schedules, particularly in summer, is just an exercise in frustration.

Good idea...like herding cats. Okay, then, Saturday the 1st of August from 12pm-4pm or so. I will bring at least one player and may have one additional. If you can come with your other player that'll give us four players but we'll have room for a couple more. If we have more than that then one of my players can convert to a GM if necessary.

We'll play PFS#24 Decline of Glory. Make yourselves a Pathfinder Society-legal character and bring it...or I'll have some pre-gens.

Sound good?
M

If at all possible, I will be there.

Good deal. I've added an event at Meetup.com...here's the link. If you're a member and want to come to the event, please RSVP*; if you're not a member, why not? :)

BTW, any Pathfinder Society DMs know if there's some kind of Paizo program to maybe get some freebies to entice players? I'll ask this on the PFS boards, I guess, but thought I'd check here.

Sorry William, I am not available on wed nights. Otherwise I would be interested.

I'm mostly-down for Pathfinder Society on the 1st. I'll have to wiggle around with the local Greyhawk group that I kickstarted. I RSVPed on the Meetup group, though. I'll see if I can get in two more online sessions, to get my Bard up to 3rd, before the day.

It's nice to know that there are other PFS players in Portland!

-Matt

Hi Matt,
Saw your RSVP, hope you can make it. Also saw your note about the Grand Lodge...should I post the event details there as well?

FYI I think most of the other folks will be running level 1s, at least I'm not aware that any of them have established PFS characters. I *think* that a group of mixed level characters (within reason) can play in the same game, using APL to determine the tier...but I'll check on that. Just wanted to let you know that we'll likely be playing a tier 1-2 game, unless we get enough for two tables and some more higher-level characters.
M

Running mixed level groups is problematic at best, particularly at low levels where even a level or 2 is BIG. I played in Portals of Midwraithe (a Seattle based "Organized Play" group) and you could easily have 4/5th level characters in an adventure with 1st levels. Either the higher levels become babysitters or the 1st levels have to just sit back and try to avoid getting killed (usually in 1 hit).

On the other hand, being the high-level as a Bard is far from overwhelming in combat. And since he's Taldan, he's rather appropriate for scenario #24, don'cha think?

-Matt
aka Gerard d'Apcher, Taldan Bard2

Joshua seemed to think mixed-level parties were okay so I think I'd at least give it a try to see how it works out. A handful of 1st-levels and a 3rd-level is probably manageable. I certainly wouldn't want to try it out with a spread much beyond that though.

And, yeah, a Taldan bard sounds like not such a bad choice for #24. There's a lot of smooth-talking that needs to go on. My Qadiran fighter wasn't so hot at talking to those guys...the damp, swampy conditions and overpowering smell of liquor didn't help his mood any. :)
M

A 3rd level Bard in a 1st level group would be ok, but this combo would be an exception to the rule, as long as it isn't some super optimized bard with some weird race that synergies well. Bards are already support characters and a fairly weak caster class.

Can I play without a printed copy of my character and PFS card. I am having printer issues, but I can bring a laptop with the info and play from it. I am assuming Guardians have WiFi.

Hmmm, I don't know if Guardian has wi-fi or not.

You don't need a printed PFS card, just your number - well, at least as far as I know, but I can't see why you'd need the card with you.

For the character, I'll print it for you and bring it if you want to send it to me. Save hauling your laptop with you. My e-mail address is somewhere above I think but let me know if you can't find it.
M

B-Guy,
I don't have your e-mail address, so hopefully you see this. I'm trying to report the session but am not sure which character number to use. Is the character you used at the session registered yet and, if so, what's the number? Thanks.
M

Hi B-guy,
I still do not have a character number for you. I'm going to submit the report on Sunday evening. If you see this before then please do let me know what character number to use...otherwise your prestige award won't be assigned properly. Thanks!
M

Sorry, this site has been crazy hard to get on lately. I'm not going to use that character again, so I am not concerned about it. Are you going to try another event?

I do plan to. Hopefully in early September. I will create an event and a post linking to it here.
