With great anticipation and an unperceivable amount of glee I left the library with my shiny new laminated card. This card was to be my ticket to all kinds of free wonders. Immediately after arriving at home, I searched the library webpages for all things D&D. Then, a thought, a pause, a shudder. Did I leave the car lights on? I had, in fact, and went out to remedy that...
Illuminated before me like the page of some holy text were the library listings for D&D. After a moment, I realized many items were listed as 0 of 1 avaliable. Then it dawned upon me. The materials were not traveling around the real world to be enjoyed by countless others. They, in truth, had been stolen!
<pause for dramatic effect.>
Now this makes me really sad. Who is such a douche that he has to steal books from the library? Honestly, I thought we gamer were above that, that we were a community as a whole that shared free RPG goodness. I have never had a problem with my things going missing, in fact, they often reappear in the hands of friends, saying "I think you left your book on the table last session (no one around here likes Eberron other than you anyway)". So this change in behaviour both saddens me and disappoints. I was planning to donate materials to my library for the enjoyment of others, but now I'm not so sure. Help a gal out and speak up for the goodness in the (gamer) world.

First, your local library has D&D stuff?!? Lucky...
Second, people who take books from libraries can only be described with an expletive-filled diatribe, and should they be found with an incomplete set of the Encyclopedia Britannica shoved up one particular orifice, I wouldn't be shedding many tears.

Yeah, Wilbur Whateley was a dick.

Yes he was.
Alright, did I unintentionally reference something I never heard of again?

If memory serves, he stole a copy of the Necronomicon from the library at Miskatonic University.

Working in a library for forever, sometimes its the kids that get them have them checked out and move away. Sometimes just ahead of the landlords looking for rent$. I feel bad, but our collection development team is AWESOME and gets a lot of 'difficult' material (though not Madonna's "Sex" book...mostly because of the goofy binding on the spine).
Though once there was an uptight prim n proper person checking out an old 2ed DMG and I asked them if they played and all that, and they snuffed and just grabbed up the item mixed in with other stuff. Sure enough, a few months later the person had paid for the DMG like it was lost.
I dont know how many kids I've put holds on for 3e or 2ed (or some Vampire/Werewolf White Wolf) books.
It is annoying for that to happen to DnD type material. There should be an area for suggestions for the system to purchase material. Put in for about 3 things at a time. More than that and the coll dev team gets cranky.

I checked out some AD&D books from my public library when I was in junior high and they were stolen from my bag during an art class by a rotten f**ktard named Brian Stephenson. I finally got them back nearly a year later after spotting them at his home and calling him on it in front of his friends and parents, but it was too late for me to return the books since the theft cost me my library card and my family was too poor to pay for the books to get my privileges reinstated (hence my having to check out books from the library in the first place.) If anybody out there games with a jerk named Brian Stephenson, do me a favor and punch him in the face or push him into traffic, whichever.
I mean, it's not like I hold a grudge or anything.

A lot of libraries are starting to include gamming materials and comics as well. But fear not milady. They typically have them as reference materials, unless they have multiple copies. In that case they are probably not listed for check out, and that may be why you saw 0 availability.
Not everyone is a em em "douche".

off/t: We have actually had someone crap in a crockpot at the Wal-Mart I worked at and put it back on the shelf. I thought this was funny, everyone else was really cheesed off. Seriously, I wondered why security never caught the serial crappers.
If you have a problem with people stealing your lunch, I have a very simple solution for you: Epsom salts. Put them on your fries and let 'er rip. You'll know who does it because they'll void their bowels like no one's business. I'm not sure how much salts you need to achieve success, because I've never had to do this, but I'm sure the internet will be happy to educate as always.
on/t: I frequently donate materials to the library, that is why I'm so upset about the whole affair. Usually, they are items I just don't really care about anymore and would rather donate than try to sell at the second hand store. Someone tween would probably really enjoy my copy of "Twilight" more than I would enjoy the 2$ I'd get for it. I move often, so I have been donating a lot of things to persons and agencies lately, especially of the bulky and/or heavy sort.
For the record, the entire province of Alberta is my library, so finding a few items isn't that unusual. You'd be impressed by the shere number of Forgotten Realms novels published though...
