Humans

General Discussion (Prerelease)

While I like the fact that humans get proficincy with a weapon of my choice, what if I'm a fighter??? or any martial character for that matter?

Take a proficiency in an exotic weapon? It will save you a feat for other, niftier things.

Well, isn't that the same deal for Elves (swords & bows), Dwarves (axes & hammers), or Half-Orcs (Great Axe & Falchion)?

Well, to be fair, those races also get any racial weapon, like dwarves get the exotic Dwarven Waraxe for example. So they do get something out of their racial weapon knowledge that humans don't.

What we need is a few exotic human weapons.

I propose putting Greatsword into this category - from now on, it's Human Greatsword. It's an exotic weapon now, but any Human with martial weapon proficiency can use it.

OK, OK, just kidding.

But yeah, to the OP, the human racial ability is nice if you're a non-melee type, and it's worthless if you're prficient with martial weapons.

Personally,

I think humans should read "...training in one weapon of their choice."

This way if they have martial weapon proficiency from their class this can be used to pick up an exotic weapon and isn't a lost race feature.

Some would argue that other races turn certain weapons from exotic to martial, therefore, it is unbalanced. But I would point out that other have several weapons they do this to, with the possibility of their being more in the future, while humans would get 1 total. Which, in itself, I feel is a balancing feature.

or at least say that "...if the humans class, at first level, already has martial weapon proficiency then they may select training in one exotic weapon of their choice."

I made it a free weapon focus and it applies to all races. So Eleven fighters get weapon focus with the bow and sword and humans with any martial weapon. This just seemed to make the most sense to us. If by your race you are trained in a weapon and the class then trains you further that should be equivalent to a weapon focus.

Given that the cleric preview character doesn't have a human bonus weapon proficiency (in addition to her god's favourite weapon which she gets a cleric), I think it is fairly safe to assume that it is gone.
