Pathfinder Beta Dragonstar Updates

General Discussion (Prerelease)

I am working on my Pathfinder Beta Dragonstar Campaign (yesterday I started making characters with two players, with the others to follow this week), and I updating my notes to reflect the changes to the DS rules (which are 3.0) to 3.5/3.75 standards.

I would appreciate any assistance in getting my DS 3.0 game rules up to a more current standard, and I have looked at various DS websites and have been active in the DS Yahoo forums, but another point of view is always welcomed.

Over at the Dragonstar SRD is most of the OGL information of the DS setting, and the basis on which I will be asking my questions.

Q1: Pershala

A) Is this 3.0 race (edited a bit to reflect the new skill rules) balanced with regards to the core PFB races? I wouldn’t mind raising the EL to +1 if any changes are needed to bring it more in line power wise.

I look at the +2 Dex, -2 Wis, and -4 Cha and wonder if that is not out of balance, and if a
-2 Cha would be more reasonable.

B) Based on the text provided in the Galactic Races book, I think Rogue would also make a great favored class for this race.

Pershala
•+2 Dexterity, -2 Wisdom, -4 Charisma: Pershala are quite adept and cunning, but they tend to be arrogant, standoffish and aloof.

•Medium-size: As Medium-size creatures, pershala have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.

•Pershala base speed is 30 feet.

•Natural Attacks: A pershala can make two claw attacks and one bite attack. When not wearing gloves, his claw attacks deal 1d4 points of damage plus Strength modifier; a bite attack deals 1d4 hit points of damage plus one-half Strength modifier as a secondary attack. The bite attack is at a -5 penalty to the attack roll.

•Low-light Vision: Pershala can see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. They retain the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions.

•Slow Fall: A pershala within arm’s reach of a wall can use the wall to slow his descent. The pershala takes damage as if the fall were 20 feet shorter than it actually is. This ability stacks with any slow fall ability gained through obtaining levels of a particular class, such as the monk. For instance, a pershala with eight levels of monk has the equivalent of Slow Fall (70 ft.).

•+4 racial bonus to Acrobatics, Climb, and Freefall checks: A pershala’s tail gives him exceptional balance, while his claws grant him superior climbing ability. In addition, pershala can adapt quite easily to freefall.

•+2 racial bonus to Stealth and Pilot checks: Pershala are accomplished leapers, while the padding on a pershala’s feet allows him to mask his movements. Additionally, Pershala are quite at home behind the controls of vehicles of all kinds.

•+2 racial bonus to Perception checks: Pershala have keen senses.

•Automatic Languages: Pershalan. Bonus Languages: Common, Gnoll, Sylvan, and Terran.

•Favored Class: Pilot. Pershala are natural pilots.

•Level Equivalent: +0

Q2: Classes

I am using the classes from the PFB directly for DS (just changed the skill lists a bit to add the DS skills). The two new classes are Pilot and Mechanists.

I gave them a BAB progression level of Fast for the Pilot, and Moderate for the Mechanists (based on some recommendations).

What I don’t have any clue as what to do yet is what to give the Pilot and Mechanists in their nine “dead” levels, short of more feats.

Any suggestions?

That is it for now, I think I got the rest under control (for now). :)

Pershala
•+2 Dexterity, -2 Wisdom, -4 Charisma: Pershala are quite adept and cunning, but they tend to be arrogant, standoffish and aloof.

On page 337 of the PFB rulebook, I can see that of the core races with a dexterity bonus, the corresponding penalties are not that harsh.

The Elf gets a +2 Dex AND a +2 Intelligence for only a -2 Con penalty in return.

The Halfling gets a +2 Dex AND a +2 Intelligence for only a -2 Str penalty in return.

The Pershala getting a +2 Dex and two penalties (one at -2 and the other at -4) just seems a bit harsh to me.

I am thinking about giving them either:

A) +2 Dex, +2 Int and -2 Cha
B) +4 Dex , -2 Wis and -2 Cha

And raising their ECL from 0 to +1 to take into account their natural weapons and skill bonuses.

Is either option above properly balanced approach to bring this 3.0 race more in line with the Pathfinder core races?
