Generic Classes. Did anyone every try it?

Has anyone ever ran games using the True20-esque Generic Classes option from Unearthed Arcana? If so, what was your experience with the variant?

Considered it, but never did.

My group is actually getting ready to go one step further -in the next games I'll be running, the players will be using the generic class from the d20 Call of Cthulhu system. All hit dice at d6, you get to pick two good/one poor save and a defensive option (bonus to AC but poor BAB) or an offensive option (two poor saves, high BAB no bonus to AC). Or something close along those lines -I might not have it exact.

I think it is a fine idea. We're trying to get back to our roots. We're all in our early 30s and have watched power creep through our games to a point where we feel like there is no danger anymore, and there is a solution to everything with the right item or spell.

We want disease and death to be a real threat. We want poison to be something to be concerned about. We want to get back to that sense of the unknown we had when we were younger. We just feel like we're running through a rules system and trading numbers, so we're really working on how the rules themselves affect our gameplay, and starting with this class revamp.

I'm curious to hear your reasons for asking!

We used 'em in our campaign but in the end the players pretty much made core classes with acouple of exeptions most notably an alchemist "combat enginer" built of the generic expert complete with exploding satchels and short range "fire hurler". It ws fun but we decided to go back to the base classes for ease in the end.

I used to GM GURPS Fantasy for about ten years, until 3E came out.

I observed that, given a classless system and a wide-open selection of skills and advantages, PCs still generally fell into pretty simple class categories: fighter. mage. rogue. Occasionally, a monk or psion.

My general opinion is that what distinguishes PCs has a lot more to do with what the player brings to the table in his head, rather than what's on the character sheet.

I was very close to once, and another time even closer to using a completely point-buy system for class abilities. I may do so in the future, as I like giving players freedom to create the character they want rather than be constrained by class/multi-class rules.

Grand Lodge

We used them in our long running campaign until the group drifted apart last summer. I really enjoyed the extra freedom of the system. The DM had compiled a huge list of class abilities as feats to round out those in Unearthed Arcana. I don't know how balanced it is or isn't or how much extra effort it requires on the DMs part but we had a lot of fun. The only thing I missed was a psionic class like the adept.

The true20 stuff looks really good but I haven't used it myself. It uses the same basic idea of generic build as you go classes.

I have a generic warrior in the Age of Darkness pbp on these boards. I like the fact that she is skilled in Bluff, Spellcraft and UMD, they all fit her back story.

In the future she is likely to take the sneak attack feat but I do wish there was more choice. However I guess that the DM and I can work something out.

It seems pretty balanced when compared with the other mainstream classes in the party.

Would have loved to have played an arcane spellcaster with access to some clerical or druidic spells but the party needed a heavy hitter.

Interesting. My experience has been different, especially once players become more familair with the available options.

Would your GM be willing to let you post those class-abilities-as-feats online?
