The problem is that too many people believe that a debate is something to be won, rather than a way to share ideas and become educated about how the other person thinks. I blame the liberal public school system, bunch of commies. ;)

I still believe in debate, and actually think the "liberal" education system is to blame for its demise. But I also believe in dialogue/conversation, and there are some instances where dialogue/conversation are appropriate and debate is not.

That's why I put "liberal" in quotation marks. I did not mean liberal education in the classical sense, which definitely encouraged debating skills. Hence, conservative educational institutions which promote classical, liberal education often have kick-ass debate teams.
