My character in Second Darkness is getting her own home, and wants/needs to get furniture for it ... and in 30 years of gaming D&D, you would think there would be ONE book (or more) that would have the costs of simple things like Beds, Tables, Chairs, etc ... but I can't find it on my shelves.
The closest I've found is the Stronghold Builder's Guidebook (WotC 2002), but the prices are by "unit" where you buy the room, all the furnishings and the construction of said room for your building.
Anyone remember a book or three that lists costs for furniture? Older is better since my library was pretty complete through 2.0, and sporadic after that ... but I swear that there is something, I just can't find it ::laughing::
Thanks for the help!
((And pre-apologies if this is the wrong forum for this))

I seem to remember a book, as well. A Volo's guide, perhaps? It was definitely something that had the look and feel of Forgotten Realms, IIRC.
You might be thinking of Aurora's Whole Realm Catalog (awesome book!) but it doesn't have a lot in the way of furniture in it. I can totally stock a kitchen with cookware and dishes. buy the sheets and pillows and blankets for my beds, and lots of lovely lamps and accessories for decorating ... but they skipped the actual furniture ::laughing::

I know the Arms and Equipment guide has a bunch of varied gear. I don't think that includes house hold furnishings but it may have things like cloth and such. Maybe you could use the jewelry pricing guides as a help on comparable luxury furniture.
XD , This would be one of those many "what do you mean they don't have..." moments. I don't recall any kind of collection of furnishings in 2e, although I'm brain is brining up the image of bed based magic item from Dragon Magazine... or maybe it was a pillow?
Funny, you'd think this would come up more often in a game where bar brawls are a practiced stereotype and Adventurers are often required to 'pay' for the damage.

This was the book I would immediately suggest. IIRC there are different grades (like bare min, basic, luxurious) and you pay to fill them room and then you work with the DM to adjust the price for any custom item item you want. Usually such things can be considered included in the cost. It's what I use!

Yeah, I may do that, though the book Courtfool mentioned looks like a good add to our library.
My problem with the Guidebook is that buying the components for the house would wind up costing more than the price the GM gave me for the home ::chuckle:: I still have this feeling I have a book somewhere with some furniture prices ... if only I could find the durn thing. The worst part of looking is it may be another game system's ... my husband and I own a LOT of gaming books :)

Write down a list of what you want (by room, if you can) Use lots of adjectives.
Example "Pretty Oak wardrobe with flowery inlay, big enough to put a dead body in, if need be".
Put the List in fron of your DM and ask "HOW MUCH?"--- as long as you do not ask for any costly materials or ask for things like "a second century elven rope bed used by a member of the royal house", you DM will give you a low number. It's just furnature to your DM, after all....

ROFL!! If the GM was my husband, I'd do that, and make him skull sweat this :) But the GM is our good friend, and this is her first time behind the screen in a long time ... I'd much rather have a source I can point to for her sake.

Here is where you can get ...And a 10' pole, if you wanted to know.
Thanks, Sharoth :) I've got one on my Amazon Wishlist while I decide, and check the rest of the game shelves to see if I already have something that gives me furniture ... I'm still shocked there isn't a way to buy this sort of stuff already laid out. I mean, c'mon, bar brawls alone account for keeping many a carpenter in business :)

Well, this way I can blame CourtFool for me spending the money to pick up a copy of ...And a 10' pole. Hey, this now means that I can hold it over his head for the rest of his life and beyond. Might be hard to find now, and really not sure if it'd fit your exact needs but Ultimate Equipment Guide 1 and 2 from Mongoose has been a life savor for me. Even if they don't have a full living room set you can get a fairly good idea of cost from that sorce. I own my copies for a few years now so I don't know how common they are on the market but very good books nevertheless.

Before we derail this thread, we should end this line right now. But, I would direct people to this post, before doing so.

Since you have one, does it definitely have plain ol' furniture in it? LOL! I'd hate to buy it and then find out it doesn't have what I specifically am looking for ... and my FLGS doesn't have any on the shelves, so mail order is my only option.

Big fan of the book and a 10ft pole. It breaks things down by age aka bronze age, stone age, middle ages, industrial age ect. Has just about anything a PC might ever feel like buying listed.Including things like beds, chairs, ect with different kinds. It doesn't get to indepth just a few general samples of each.

You welcome and for references the ages it covers are
Stone age
Copper age
Bronze age
Iron Age
Middle Age
Renaissance
Age of Reason
Industrial Revolution
Age of Steam
Electric Age
Atomic Age
IT Age
The prices are done by RM which is a silver standard and it uses things like tin and bronze pieces but has conversion guide in the front on the value of the coins. So not hard to convert. It list just about everything including weapons, armor and adventure gear along with cloths, house hold stuff services ect. Just all FYI. I think ICE still has the book in stock in their store, if you want a new copy.

Just point her to me. I'll tell her that you don't have to go into too much detail for that kind of thing.
I'd say go with a percentage of what the house cost/would cost. If you need pointers for that sort of thing, the Guide to Korvosa has real estate prices, and I think the Guide to Absalom does so as well.
I guess anywhere between 10% and 50% of the building/apartement's value would fit.

Who is more foolish? The Fool, or the fool who follows him?
The one getting lost on the way and ending up challenging a renowned knight to a jousting duel carried out with giant candy sticks.
Arrow slit
I'd buy two of these, please. Do you deliver or will I have to come and get them. I want them put into my horse.
If you do deliver, please have them sent to the Mayor of Schilda.
And I'd like a couple of buckets, too, but only if they're sunproof. It's dark in here.

You may have to go back to the 1st edition DMG. I know it had lists of room and dungeon furnishings, but i cant recall if they listed prices and my books are in storage 1600 miles away.
Can anyone take a peek?
I peeked. No prices, just a list of furnishings in the appendix section.
Edit: Ninja'd while peeking!

I ran into the same problem recently. But I created my own solutions.
I don't know if it will help but here is my solution.
I probably went the long way but the first step was to assign a value to wood (raw and planked). Also had to assign an average weight to wood.
Mind you some of these prices may or may not match your idea of what the prices should be but it works for mine pretty well.
Then I figured out the approximate weight of the furniture. I took the furniture weight and multiplied it by the planked wood cost. Then I multiplied it by three (as the creation rules stipulate that you must pay 1/3 the final cost in materials).
My values for wood:
Wood- Logs, Cord 1
15 gp ~5000 lb
Wood- Lumber, Planks 2
60 gp ~5000 lb
1Wood, cord: A cord is a lot of wood - sometimes. It is usually the unit of measure for unprocessed wood. A cord unit of wood based on 128 cubic feet of condensed, stacked roundwood including bark and some air confined to an area 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet. Solid wood with no air or bark has a volume of from 85 to 110 depending on many variables.
2Wood, timber: Timber is measured in board feet. A board foot consists of the equivalent of 1 square foot of wood one inch thick. 1,200 board feet of wood weighs approximately
The weight of these amounts can vary as much as 2000 lbs depending on the density of the wood type.
My values for furniture:
Rug/Wall hanging
1 gp/sq ft 1 lb
Bed, single
4 gp 100 lb
Bed, double
6 gp 150 lb
Bench, sitting
14 sp 35 lb
Bookcase
14 sp 35 lb
Cabinet, kitchen
1 gp 25 lb
Chair
1 gp 25 lb
Couch
18 sp 45 lb
Cushions
8 sp 1.5 lb
Desk
14 sp 40 lb
Dresser
22 sp 60 lb
Table
18 sp 45 lb
Wardrobe
26 sp 65 lb
Workbench
18 sp 45 lb
These items can come in varying degrees of quality. These degrees have a price modifier associated with them. Poor (1/3 cost), Common (x1 cost), Good (x3 cost), High (x5 cost) and Decadent (x10 cost).
Steal if you like (it is to be released as open gaming content anyways).

At some point I worked out that a gold piece ought to be worth about $100. That figure's rubbery enough that it will probably work for US$ just as well as NZ$, and just as well for 4e gold pieces as 1e. So you could hit your online furniture catalogue of choice, look for timber-based designs and probably double the resulting price for hand-crafting rather than mass production.

Better yet, make it a quest! For…each…and…every…piece.

So I was cleaning out some stuff recently which included a lot of my old roleplaying stuff. Then I came across some stuff that I had downloaded years (and years) ago. One of the things I got ahold of long ago was "The Great Net Equipment List". Doing a quick search, I found it --> Here. Hope it helps.

If it's not there, you could try using the "Ale Standard". Get the price of a pint of beer in your game and in the real world (in a pub, not a supermarket, I would suggest as in supermarkets beer is often a loss-leader - not a problem when the Ale Standard was invented), convert GPs to your local currency based on that, and then hit the shops or the mail order catalogues for whatever you want armed with a notebook and calculator. In the interests of realism(!?) you may be better off going with the specialist or high-class end of things as mass production of a lot of things would not have normally been available to reduce prices (although as an exception you may think of things like everyday pottery and clay pipes).

I actually did the same thing in my campaign as Starglim and have used everything from old sears catalogs to custom furniture stores for items, of course I STRONGLY recomend picking up a copy of the Whole Realms Catalog.. I got mine when it first came out and several rolls of clear packing tape later it remains the most used book in my collection
