That's why kids shouldn't have cell phones!
Craziness tho!

Well, I think it's a matter of parents not taking an assertive stance on technology.
[PLOP] technology arrives
[PLOP] snowflake wants it
[PLOP] parent delivers
[PLOP] snowflake winds up dead, on drugs, morally derailed, pole dancing, setting up residence at a certain street corner, or something ...
Folks...this is stuff that parents need to take control over. In my case, I have two daughters. I fully intend to sit down and talk to them about it (including the sexting thing). I fully intend to point out some slob on the street and say "Hey, that guy could end up drooling over something YOU decided to post". I intend to make it clear that I will occasionally review the phone to see if photos have been taken, or sent.
And, hey folks...GUESS WHAT...they DO make phones that DO NOT HAVE CAMERAS in them...just ask anyone who works in a secure site....

My boys are 9, no cell phones yet...how old are your daughters? have you given them any talks yet?
IF I ever do let mine have phones, they WILL NOT have cameras...heh.
Unfortunately you don't need a camera to receive a picture...

6 and 1.5....
I just feel that parents make choices and too often these choices are to not give a crap what their kids are doing. Hell, I remember to this day how my father DESPERATELY tried to understand D&D (dear god...the blue book...he never knew what hit him even though he was rather intelligent)...he never truly understood it from reading it, so he talked to me...asked probing questions...
And you know what...I KNEW that he cared.

heh my step-dad was a jerk when I asked if he wanted to play, he went thru the 1e DMG and found the rule for hearing and helmets and quizzed me on it...then since I didn't know the rule, used that as an excuse to not play...
Course When I was 12 and finally beat him at Chess, he never played against me again...since I didn't read all the books and everything like he did...
He was Bi-polar so I have to forgiven him...he's gone now too...I still miss him at times.

Jade, I believe you have to roll with the punches of modern technology...soon, it'll be so innate you won't be able to get a phone without AI let alone a damned camera...
My point is to explain to them how their actions have consequences...not to be naive...and to think things through.
I don't intend to barr certain types of technology shy of using it as a temporary punishment
< NO, NO, you will NOT use the teleportation device EVER!!!!>

My Dad was Missourri born and bred...which meant "You killed HOW MANY trolls????"...he simply couldn't wrap his head around the concept at all....therefor, couldn't try to play either. He loved football and sports (dear god i lost out on that gene) but also loved sci-fi and horror and westerns (woohoo!)...

A fact I can most readily attest to, since I specifically purchased a cameraless phone.
I'm waiting for the day when some poor schmuck gets a sexting "crank-call" photo sent to him by some idiotic teen, then gets busted for having child porn on his phone.

Odd I would have thought that in order to be a sex offender you would have to be doing this stuff and be over the age of consent.
you can be a sex offender for peeing in a public place...
if they get tried as adults, they can have the labels transferred as adults, so a 14 or 15 year old could end up being a sex offender if convicted of these felony charges. There are also parents being charged with it in some cases for their children's actions...

Nope, my cousin is a juvenile parole officer and has several sex offenders he has to keep track of.

Yeah I have talked to some people like that, one kid mooned a train and he is now a registered sex offender, right along side the pedophiles and rapists.
I think they need different degrees of sex offenders to really classify it better. It would be pretty terrible if one of those kids gets that label for the rest of his life because he had naked pictures of his girlfriend on his phone as dumb as it might be to keep them.

I'm actually speechless at this. I mean by this logic over half the males in my old primary school would have been sex offenders.

So on the one hand we have the net with its infectious wasteland of pornography, and on the other hand we have laws of absurd scope that are designed to protect our kids from the very sexual dysfunction the net is nurturing, and those laws are now f%*@ing over some of the very kids they are supposed to protect when those kids are acting out in a way that is totally understandable considering the world in which they live.
How I long for the days when you had to actually convince a human being that you were 18 years old in order to get a Penthouse instead of just typing in a fake date of birth from the privacy of your own home.
Or you had to score them by rooting through garbage cans and then hide them like a pirate's treasure.
Maybe I'll just stay over here in China where you can't access porn online. That seems like a much simpler solution.

I fully agree with current policy. Serves these kids right, having more tantalizing fun then we ever could when we were their age. Besides, it's much easier to indict and imprison an underage person than counsel them and try to invest them with a sense of self-esteem. We're far too overworked as it is. Just treat them like criminals, it's easier on all of us in the long run.

I wish I could find the article, but I remember reading on cnn.com about an 18 year old who was convicted of statutory rape for sleeping with his 17 year old girlfriend (they were caught by her parents). That wasn't even the point of the article--when he turned 20, the two of them wanted to get married, but before they could he had to convince a judge to suspend a North Carolina law which prohibits granting marriage licenses to sex offenders. In the end they got married, but he is still required to register as a convicted sex offender whenever they move.

A friend of mine is in a similar situation, except he was 17 and she was 16. So even though he is now in hid mid-thirties and married with two kids, he's still a registered sex offender (which is so much fun when one has small children) and has had a nightmarish time getting a job. He often has to work off the books and has never been able to get hired in the field he studied. All for having consentual sex with his girlfriend when they were in high school. The system here is so ridiculously broken.

In Alaska the city actually puts a sign up in the neighborhood where a registered sex offender has moved. You log on to the site and it gives you his or her mugshot, name and address, but there's nothing about the crime or time it occurred. Thanks to a weird marriage of privacy laws and child protection, I only know that he's convicted and at that address. With nothing else to go on, I naturally assume he must be a vile pedophile, and if I see kids coming out of his house, do I call the cops? The truth might be that he had underage sex with his 17 year old girlfriend ten years ago; they later married, and the kids are his. I think the original intent was to protect us from violent, repeat offenders, and adults who abuse children. The term itself is too broad now. There's a prison worker who was recently convicted of sex crimes for having consensual sex with an inmate. Both of them were over 30 years old, but she was in a supervisory position. Despite evidence which suggested they would marry after the man was released, she is now going to jail and will be registered as a convicted sex offender.

They need to come up this different degrees like murder has. All violent sex offenders are first degree rape, pedophiles that sort of thing. Some thing like public nudity, aka being drunk and peeing on the sidewalk should be way down at fourth degree or something and this would not require you to register something like that. They just need to put some more thought into it I think. Like the above if that guy could explain himself most people wouldn't bat an eye but his picture and name are still posted at the court house for all to see and if it was me that saw the picture I would assume the worse.

Found my first one when walking home from school in the 8th grade, just lying there in PERFECT condition literally in the middle of the street. I looked at it for almost a full 5 minutes as it sat there, the wind caressing its pages. I looked around for almost TEN minutes before picking it up, wondering if this was some cleverly-designed trap. I will never forget that day...

Something like this happened to my mother-in-law's husband. He is on the registry and my sister-in-law and her husband were spending the night at their apartment. Someoen called the cops and told him that my mother-in-law's husband was holding a girl hostage in the house to abuse and that they needed to go rescue her. Luckly the officer who showed up was the kind who actually listens first and judges second, or it could have ended badly.
On the other hand, we have a registered offender living on our block. He was a teacher at the local high school and was convicted of having sex with some of his students. Now every couple of monthes another pretty young blonde who may or may not be legal shows up, lives with him for a while, and then moves on for the next girl to take her place. My other neighbors don't see anything wrong with what he did, since it was consenual. I've decided that it's because one of the other neighbors was sixteen when she got pregnant the first time and the father of her child was in his thirties. The moment it becomes wrong for the guy in our neighborhood to do what he did is the moment she has to admit that what happened to her was wrong.

I arrainged to clean a couple of dorm rooms for some of the sailors on base in exchange for magazines. It worked out well for all parties involved, and my girlfriend was mighty impressed with my skill.

What skill was that - being able to turn the pages of a magazine with one hand?
On the phones thing, I question if kids really benefit much from them in a practical way. After all, they get mugged for them, and I know of one case in the UK where a girl with a phone disappeared and showed up sexually assualted and murdered - the point being that having one didn't help her in her situation at all. While it is for the parent to judge, my gut feel is that it allows kids (who are often naive and stupid) to do stuff out of sight of their parents in a way that might be age-inappropriate (like sending round nude pictures of themselves). You can't chain them up and keep them in the basement (were aren't Austrian) but you need to keep tabs on what they do. But, as someone says, the key factor is how mature the kid is and the quality of their relationship with their parents to start with.
