Almost 500 years later the edition shism still exists.

That was just change for change's sake. ML totally raped the Realms.

Wishing that 4 ed. should fail just to prove you were right in not liking it is a little wierd.

WotC appears to be pushing DnD into the format of an online database that people subscribe too. People are already posting that they don't need to buy the books anymore.

I just ignored all of that and kept on going with my game as the Realms were before the big "magic" boom thingy. :)

I think those people are full of it. I own a subscription, and there's still no decent substitute for having the appropriate book on hand. The ones pushing the idea you're talking about are the same sorts of reactionary people who ranted about how 4th Edition is going to encourage parties to farm monsters all day long.

Why not?

I mean if the online database is providing everything one actually needs to run the game then I don't see why there is a particular need to own the book. I mean there might be other good reasons to own the book, you like the art for instance, but it seems to me that there is no actual need to own them.

My DM is running us through Scales of War and I know that he does not have anything but the online component and the core books. He seems to believe he has everything he needs to run his game. Is he wrong about that? If so how?

I agree Jeremy - I have dozens of books on file in pdf form and have thinned out my hard copies to books I just can't do without...and those are getting fewer by the week. (eBay has been veddy veddy good to me!)

Granted, it is easier to flip through a book and find what you need when you need it in a hurry.
But if you are gaming online in a pbp or via email, pdf's work fine.

The compendium, while incredible, is not exhaustive. It contains many times more errors than the original material does. Still, if you're able to run an entire game with nothing but the compendium and core books - even for players - then I could be mistaken. I still see a huge market for physical copies of the books for those who prefer to flip through something they can hold, or those who don't bring laptops to the game table.

As for PDFs, I agree that the books are mostly unnecessary if you own digital copies. We were discussing access to the compendium, however, not PDF copies of the books.

Don't get me started on Deadlands D20.. I feel it is one of the causes of Pinnacle's "fall".

Oh well. Time to chime in again:

All your edition choices are dumb. You don't play games, you play... something incredibly stupid.

There's only one game and one game only!

Pawfinder forever!

If it doesn't have rules for playing a kitten with a wizard familiar, it's just not roleplaying!

I find your ideas intriguing and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
