You've been Pre-Approved!
I have the good sense to throw away these kinds of offers ;>
Did you notice that V's children are adopted?

Well, we now have "all the wrong reasons" lined up.
How so? It's an ambiguous phrase, so I' d be interested in hearing your take on it. I've been thinking vaguely the same thing, but the way I interpreted "all the wrong reasons" was that it would almost be a mistake that he said the words altogether and that doing so would not have any connection to gaining the arcane powers. It seems like he is saying the words to gain the full arcane powers for very right reasons (to rescue his family). Anyway, just curious what makes you say that.

Well, the oracle who interpreted Vaarsuvius' question was a worshipper of Tiamat, so "all the wrong reasons" for wanting earth-cracking power may well be something as selfless as "saving my spouse and children".
(Does it seem incongruous to anybody else, by the way, that V married a baker? What was that courtship supposed to be like?

Well V's short comic in 'Origins of the PCs' does have him in an Iron Wizard competition.

That seems like a big stretch to me. That doesn't fit with Burlew's style or the Oracle's character as demonstrated thus far. I have to agree with Sebastian (gasp!), it still seems like V is making his choices for the right reasons. I halfway expect his family to die and V to go even crazier in his pursuit of power than he already has, saying the right four words for revenge or out of blinding grief and rage, seeking the power to set right the wrong no matter the cost to himself or anyone else. That would be the clearest, most direct route from here to there in terms of plot, IMHO.

Ways this could lead to "all the wrong reasons":
- Revenge. While unbinding the children's souls could be a 'right' reason, s/he could go about it the wrong way. (i.e. Dragon Genecide until someone tells shim where mama black dragon is)
- Assisting the infernal powers to access the snarl. (remember it is "complete and total ultimate arcane power" and Xykon says the snarl promises something like that with some ritual) This would probably doom the whole campaign setting to Devils running loose as they desire.
- Killing a paladin that tries to stop shim. The paladin may only desire to "arrest" the offend dragon.
I'm sure there are others, but this is all I can think of quickly. I think #2 is the most likely.

Well, we know what the four words are.
And it turns out, as people here were quick to point out, that my suspicions were wrong. Gaining power to sve V's children would indeed have been for the right reasons. But entering the Soul Splice for power and vanity were the wrong reasons.
Ayup. Selling your soul to protect your ego from having to admit that you failed at something, or even less than that, to admit that you needed HELP to do something... that's the wrong reasons indeed.

The title of the episode was spot on. It was like he was reading these very boards. It was like he knew what we were thinking!

Really, that's one of the things I like best about OOTS - it seems like Rich and I probably had very similar childhoods and influences. The "fruit pie the magician" parody was a classic example, but hardly the only one.

That's one of my all-time favorite OOTSes. That, and the first time I read Start of Darkness with Helldeathdoomfire Volcano. :)
