Exotic Weapon Proficiency

If you take the Exotic Weapon Proficiency feat, do you gain proficiency in only one weapon or in a class of weapons? The text of the feat says: You make attack rolls with the weapon normally. But it also goes on to say the feat refers to a type of weapon, which could mean weapon groups or even something as broad as bludgeoning, piercing, etc.

Thanks.

If we are talking of backwards compatibility, then in the 3.5 PHB it gives examples of the Bastard Sword or a Shuriken being a “type” of weapon. Taking that to its logical conclusion, then when you take Exotic Weapon Proficiency you must choose a weapon from the Exotic Weapon List, not just choose a Bludgeoning, Piercing, or Slashing type of weapon. However, it would be appropriate for someone from the Paizo gang to comment directly to this question.

Just my 2 cp.

I would like an answer to this too. I had believed that the Exotic Weapon Proficiency feat gave you profiency only in one specific weapon from the exotic weapon list. If it gave you access to a group of weapons that would be rather nice.

It would be interesting to hear from Paizo in regards to this question. However, my personal opinion on the matter is that exotic weapons are exactly that. They are unlike alot of martial or simple weapons. So it would be logical to have an exotic weapon feat be only for one specific weapon.

After re-reading the feat I'm no longer as certain as I was before.

Exotic Weapon Proficiency
"Choose a type of exotic weapon. You understand how to
use that type of exotic weapon in combat."

It seems to me if it was only a specific weapon the second sentence would instead say "You understand how to use that exotic weapon in combat".
