Request and / or Plea: Hyperlinked rules-site

General Discussion (Prerelease)

PRPG really needs something like d20srd. I cannot live without it! My group finally adopted the Beta rules, and we are really digging them, but I find myself searching the PDF constantly.

I know this has been talked about many times, so consider this a reminder/plea/vote.

Cheers!

I am not sure whether this would help, and I don't recall the thread, but someone here did an index for the Beta that might help you locate something in either the pdf or the softcover. Maybe someone else recalls where that index is, or you can try using the search engine under Beta index.

EDIT: Lo and behold it is under "Pathfinder Beta Index available".

I think that this is something that will at least initially be community driven. I think we should approach it with prudence as anything created now will effectively need to be redone or heavily overhauled in August.

I believe the Paizo staff have said a few things about doing this. The first is that they are not going to do one for the Beta rules, but they did say that they were looking toward doing this for the final Pathfinder RPG rules and that they believed d20srd.org set the standard for this type of site.

Someone pointed out this site:
pfogc.com

It's not hyperlinked like d20srd.org is, though.

As a web developer, I have built one of these myself, but I cannot share it with anyone due to much of the content being under Pathfinder copyright. It took a lot of work copying from the PDFs into an HTML document.

I CAN however, share the layout without the Pathfinder content.

You can email:

if you'd like to see the layout without content.

Umm... correct me if I'm wrong but isn't material such as pfogc.com basically violating the copyright if the site publishes anything that is customization of the OGL...
Starknife weapon?
Elven Curve Blade Weapon?
Combat Maneuvers?

I'm curious about that as well. I just joined that site with the intention of contributing from time to time as my schedule allows, but I think I might need an ok from someone from Paizo before I do.

You're a bit confused. Publishers may use anything we've designated as Open Content so long as they follow all of the other terms of the OGL (which includes updating their OGL section 15 to include our sources, which they seem to have done).

Anything we've designated as Product Identity is off limits—the RPG's list of deities is Product Identity, and I didn't spot that on their site, so that's good.

However, where they *do* have a problem is that the OGL section 7 prohibits them from using our trademarks without a separate license, so their "Pathfinder Open Game Content" header is a no-no.

(There may be other issues—I haven't looked that closely.)

Didn't I see mention in another thread of Paizo setting up its own "online reference tool," as it was being called? I'm pretty sure I did, and I wholeheartedly support having an Official (TM) hyperlinked reference site run by Paizo staffers and/or someone answerable to Paizo. (In addition to any fan-created SRDs, of course.)

We plan to for the finished game, but not for the Beta.

Even then, I think there's a lot of merit to fan-managed resources. As long as the game stays "alive", fan resources tend to be better maintained and executed than Official Resources. Of course, that's only been my personal experience with the SRD... but that is one of the better parts of the Open model

Thanks Vic for checking it out. I'll refrain from contributing anything until any offenses (almost certainly unintentional) are corrected. I'm sure anything that is found that shouldn't be there will be corrected quickly. I look forward to helping support (and have made every effort to on every blog I post to) to promote and support Paizo's efforts with Pathfinder.

Another component/product idea for this is to develop a digital DM's screen that helps DM's run their games, outside of just providing the content from the Pathfinder RPG.
