Monsters in RotRL test my love of minis (spoilers)

Rise of the Runelords

So I've started looking ahead through the adventure path to see what minis I'll need to acquire for the various encounters.

Pathfinder #1 - No problem!
Pathfinder #2 - Interesting, I'll shell out the bucks for Xanesha and the Scarecrow.
Pathfinder #3 - GOOD GAWD!
Pathfinder #4 - You can't be serious????
Pathfinder #5 - WHAT THE (insert favorite word)?!
Pathfinder #6 - Harridan??? Hungerer???? Rune Giant was actually the easiest one! (action figure from McFarlane)

Any ideas out there for some of the more interesting/obscenely huge ones?

There's some fairly cheap singles of ogres and hill giants on miniaturemarket.com for the dnd painted minis. I certainly stalked up on the them. As for the really big giants... The eldritch giant, death giants, fire titans and such are pretty useful, but they are only huge.

My best gaming investment for the dollar was made years ago. A foamboard, laminated, with 1 inch squares drawn on it, then sliced into 2x2, 3x3, 4x4 and 6x6 chunks. I can draw on the squares with a dry erase marker and wipe clean.

After years of using minis, I pretty much went back to the drawing board, bought some cardstock and the Fiery Dragon 3.5 PDFs and probably from Thursday on I'll be running with counters again. The sheer number of giants and ogres pretty much convinced me to do so.

Of course, Virtual Tabletops will save you hundreds of dollars in the long run. Most are about 30-50 bucks, and require a laptop & way to display for players (like a monitor or TV).

I use d20pro, but I hear battlegrounds is pretty good too. Then you just grab an image from any of your favorite artists or even the module PDF / Scan!

Seriously, I sold my 500+ minis and never. looked. back.

Which McFarlane fig did you use? I'm beginning FotSG and getting ever closer to the end!

Not cheap, but cheaper than trying to find metal minis!

Do a search on the web for a best price for this, probably around $10 USD

I have to say I am really committed to doing the miniatures and battlemap technique I've come up with so far. My players really enjoy not having to worry about a projector's visibility and they appreciate the tactile quality of the game.

One thing I felt when playing around with products like d20Pro/Fantasy Grounds is that it didn't feel like D&D/table-top RPG. It really felt like I was playing a computer game. :(

Let's see...

I found a great deal on Half-Ogre Barbarians (Underdark set) to use in Hook Mountain Massacre. They're not 100% accurate, but they're close enough! ;P

I'm thinking about counters for Fortress of the Stone Giants, unless I have a financial windfall in the near future, (which reminds me - I need to get in touch with Immora about that...)

I'm using Earth Titans (against the Giants) for my Earth Elementals at the entrance to Runeforge.

The Blackroot Treant (Against the Giants) will work for the treant in Spires of Xin-Shalast.

I hope that helps a little! :)

I planned for this a bit when Paizo had a bunch of giant's minis on sale last year (Mountain Giant sort) - still costly. I shelled out for a couple designed for HMM, and then pulled out all the giant minis I've been hording for a while and got to painting them.

Low on Ogres though, thanks for the tips.

I have like 6 ogre skullcrushers that i bought on ebay for pretty cheap, aswell as a few from a friends collection I bought for pretty cheap (like 40$ for 150-200 figs including a ton of rares) I also have about 8 or 9 stone giants (4 or 5 I bought again on ebau for pretty cheap) as well as various huge figures to stand in for whatever. The key in my experience to the huge monsters is just token it up or use a huge mini in its place and show a pic of it to the players so they get what it is supossed to be. Hope that helps (oh and try ebay! :P)

It's certainly making me get creative. For Black Magga (#3) I'm planning on getting a plastic octopus and the gluing a snake head on top of it.

If you can find it Mandarin Spawn is a really good stand in for the rune giants

I had planned on using the mcfarlane hydra, and taking off the wings for this

Other than the action figures, what have people used for the Storm Giants, Cloud Giants and Rune Giants in PF 6? Has anyone come up with suggestions for the harridans and other lamia-kin yet?

Inspired by the Paper Minis of N'wah, I made a paper mini of a rune giant which you can see here. That's is just a prototype in B/W and on light paper, in color and on cardboard it will look better.

Let us know when it's ready for purchase :)

I think I'm kind of slow today...but, if you already own the art, and you can just take that art and make paper minis out of them...

For the Harridans, my plan was to build something out of DDM Displacer Beast Packlords, but I'm not sure where to find an appropriately sized upper body.

For the Matriarchs (they're large and often serpentine, right?) I'd like to point you in the direction of Kuan-Lin from Helldorado. NSFW nipple alert on that link btw.

For the huge-size giants, I'm not sweating things. I can live with using my DDM mountain trolls for pretty much anything huge and humanoid. In the miniatures department, my plan is to concentrate my time and money on the most story-relevant and unique encounters.
