Last War Campaign: Stage 1: The Hunt
You find yourselves gathered in the city of Fairhavenin the region of Aundair during the month of Nymm. The year is 894 and the Kingdom of Galifar is in trouble. All spring, rumors circulate that the king is dying, and his heirs are not clear or content with the process of procession. Everywhere around you in the streets and shops people are talking about it. Even as you enter the Arcane Dreams Inn, you hear various people arguing over how the succession will play out.
That concerns you little however, as you have more pressing issues. For the past few weeks, you have been searching for a political agitator in Aundair, a shifter called Bruhask. Mauthinus, your ‘handler’ from the Kings Eyes of Aundair wants him brought in alive for interrogation. Shifter clans in the Eldeen Reacheshave been organizing and Bruhask seems to be behind it.
In the Acrane Dreams, you await Mauthinus. What do you do?

Info on Shifters from Aubrey's PbP Campaign, for those unfamiliar with Eberron)
Shifters:
Shifters are the descendants of lycanthropes, but rather than being an affliction their bestial nature has been internalised in a process call shifting. When a shifter shifts, this animalistic trait is released, enhancing the shifter in a number of ways. (In game terms, a shifter chooses a shifter trait which can be used, a bit like a barbarian rage, to enhance them for a limited period of time. There are a number of traits with different effects to choose from, ranging from increased AC, growing claws or fangs as natural weapons, enhanced senses, and so on.) Shifters have a bestial appearance, with hairy arms, legs and sideburns in both sexes, and stand about 5’6” tall. They are subject to a degree of prejudice because of their somewhat frightening appearance, and are most prevalent in the Eldeen Reaches. Their favoured class in Ranger.

A small boy arrives with a closed envelope for you. He seems wise beyond his years and quite comfotable among the adults of the different races in the inn. He nods once and then leaves the common room. The envelope conmtains one small piece of paper. On the parchement is a symbol of an eye inside a royal crown; the symbol of the Royal Eyes of Aundair. After exchanging glances one of you touches the symbol and it transforms on the page into a sentence: follow the boy.
A note on Eberron world info: if you are going to congtinue sharing game world information with each other, keep it very general. DC 5 on knowledge checks to represent what the average person would know about a particular topic is a good rule of thumb. The reason for this is that the characters, though experienced, are far from experts in every field of knowledge. More specific info will be revealed through the story, actions of the characters and knowledge rolls. thanks.

You spread yourselves out and follow the boy, trying to look around without being too obvious about it. There is a large number of pedestrians out in the streets today, and despite the frilly clothes and perfumed bodies, the first thing you all check for are fastened peace knots on weapons of those coming close to you.
This inherant defensiveness makes it hard to pinpoint the boy, but between you, you are able to follow to an older house near the lightning rail station.
Once you are all inside, the boy looks around, smiles and transforms into an older Aundarian man you all know to be your handler.
Greetings. the subterfuge is necessary even in our capitol I'm afraid. There are bigger things brewing on the horizon so I need you to take care of this Shifter business quickly. Divinations have revealed that allies to Bruhask are coming in by rail. Exactly who was not determined, but they will be carrying dragonshards. This much is certain. I need you to be on the lookout for people at the station. He reaches into his jacket and hands out offical documents. These give you the right to search passengers in the name of the King of Galifar. Use them if the local watch or passengers give you trouble.
He turns to leave (by the back door, not the one you all came in) and says, The train will be coming in shortly, decide where you will post yourselves and how to intercept suspects. Good luck gentlemen.
With that, he shimmers and then all you see is an old woman struggling to get through the door.

"It's not my first choice of places to visit, but it'll do I s'pose." Faress has been quiet during this affair, willing to listen and evaluate the situation on his own terms. If the whole affair made him a little uneasy, he didn't show it.
"Come on Silnur. Follow me close, and keep to yourself." he says, reaching down to the large mastiff's neck and giving it a scratch. This large dog, with it's powerful jaws and leather armour, was intimidating and visibly powerful in every way that Faress wasn't.

"Truly?" Kae wonders, "It's just a magical mode of transportation. Not some seedy dive in the Demon Wastes"

Faress Keen-Eye |

"Aye. It's not the rail I'm worried about. Have you ever been to one of those stations? People! Everywhere. Milling about. Travelling here, and zooming there. Scurrying. And we're supposed to sniff out the right ones? I don't like it one bit. That's kinda like holding back a crack in a dam with just our thumbs. If we have to hold up every single person, it could cause a riot in there. There must be a better way."

"I lived on the streets of Sharn, crowds are no problem for me."
"Now, he gave us this paper saying we're acting as agents of the crown. Perhaps we should just stop the passengers and make sure they know. Since we're acting on behalf of Galifar, the guards would be under our jurisdiction as well."
checks his weapons, checks his false peace knots, making sure he can draw if needed

"So all we know is that they will have dragon shards and that they are coming in by rail? Hm... How many stops are expected for the rest of the day? We should probably keep an eye out for any shifters too." Kael turns to Kaellead, "Could you find out if any Dragon House members are supposed to be coming into town today?"

it's not 1 house, it's multiple houses
"I don't think we have time, but Shifters don't carry marks, so I think it's a moot point."

Kael Spellspinner |

yeah, I thought maybe the houses had diplomatic ties so you might be able to find out if someone was planning a visit. We could either ignore certain people by that information or follow them because of it. If they had a dragonshard on them we could *Possibly* ignore them becuase we know they are here "officially".
"Yes shifters don't have marks... but they may try to establish contact with whomever is coming in for them at the station. If we see shifters talking to someone with a shard that person might be more interesting to use than someone here with a shard not talking to shifters."

Rurik Ungart |

Rurik continues to sit there, following along with the conversation.
Well, I just realized I basically made a rogue with no sneak attack and a few minor tricks. Anyone mind if I just retroactively make him a rogue, assuming I get done with it before we do anything important?

Patrick Murphy |

Up to the DM, I don't care one way or the other. Patrick is there, and would I know about, some sort of manifest system to the lightning rail that we might be able to examine to figure out who and how things are coming in to the town?
Normally I would be adverse to anyone tweaking a character once a game has started but I will allow this once. Please keep this in mind everyone for future choices.
There are manifests for all shipping on the continent done legally. Very accurate ones when dealing with the great houses.
also, I have a lot to do this week with the start of term and I will not be able to post anything significant until Wednesday or so.
Sorry for the slowdown.

Patrick Murphy |

I regret to say that I will not be able to DM this game. I had a new course added to my schedule instead of another slot of something that I have taught before. This means I need more time to prep and that takes away from time I wanted to devote to doing this right. I am deeply sorry for wasting your time, but I just can't do this game the way I want it done.
take care everyone.

DMing is hard.
Yeah, I was waiting on 1 of the players, but picked up another...so we're go...

I've got Strange Loops, Darker Darkness, and the Last Baron game on here; at the table I run another Second Darkness game. I'm also a DJ, so my weekends are shot. Plus I just started a Sommelier program, so school is eating up time now too. There was that whole trying to start a business thing too that is now on the backburner....
I often have dreams of the pbps...Things I need to update, or check, or do, come to haunt me in my sleep...
