Pathfinder Wiki Year-End Push

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Paizo Employee Director of Brand Strategy

Last night I noticed that the PathfinderWiki has an article count of 825. We started in March and have had a lot of help getting to where we are now, but there's still a long way to go. We're setting a goal to have 1,000 or more articles counted on the main page by the end of 2008, and we can't do it without the help of the Paizo/Pathfinder community. Every day the resource grows, and you can help us reach this goal!

So if there's a particular part of Golarion that inspires you or you're running a game and doing a lot of background reading as part of your preparations, drop by and contribute a short article or two. I've found that writing a paragraph or two on a subject helps me remember the little details for my own game, so you might give it a try if you think there's a topic that you'll need to know really well.

We're not asking anyone to quit their day job to work on the site or anything (though we wouldn't stop you) but every little bit helps. Feel free to ask any questions you might have here, on the chat room or the PFWiki Forums and don't be afraid. If you're new to wiki editing, it comes quickly and there are plenty of us here in the community who are more than happy to help out.

I'll see you at 1,000+ in 4709!

Thanks go out to contributors who have made edits and additions since I first posted this. If we keep up the pace, I think we'll be in fine shape to meet the goal! Yay!

Yoda: I've been looking, but I seem to have misplaced my password for the wiki. I didn't give an e-mail address, and I don't want to clutter up the wiki with yet another account. Would it be alright to post the remaining class articles here for you to copy?

Better to email them to me at this screenname at pathfinderwiki.com so as not to clutter the Paizo boards.

We've made a ton of progress in only two and a half weeks! Special thanks go out to Chedder Bearer, Cpt Kirstov, Scribe-of-the-Sanos, and one Ask A Shoanti for all the help. We're over 900 now and well on our way. At this point we've got 84 articles to go and just over three weeks to do it in.

So this is your friendly reminder to get to adding those wiki articles.

That is all.

we still have 60 articles to go and less than 2 weeks to do it!

Did you get the word from Vic, to resolve what community stuff was OK to post?

I had links to several PF wikis and fan-sites, whose addresses no longer work, don't know if this was one of them.

Didn't someone have a version of the Paizo blog, but in a more user-friendly form (ie First to Last, without the need to keep hammering the 'older posts' button)?
Any idea what happened to that?

We were in contact with a number of people from Paizo when the wiki was started, but like everyone else we are awaiting the official fansite policy. And yes, the PathfinderWiki is still around. Perhaps the other sites took themselves down because they couldn't compete with us?

Well, they all know about it, Wes has said in one of his posts about one of the races "and you can quote this for the wiki". At least 2 employees have contributed to the pages about them, and I have seen an employee mention it in at least one post to the boards

Scarab Sages

That's great.
I wasn't pointing the finger, I just know that several sites have shut down (voluntarily?) after posting spoilers or copyright material, and I wouldn't want you to get into trouble or find you'd wasted your time.

I thought the offical licence/guidance wasn't due until New Year.

Where is the appropriate place to post questions you have about the Wiki?

you can post them here or on the wiki messageboard (linked on the main page)

Nine days left before the start of 4709 and we are 49 articles short (as of this posting). That's like 1 articles a day from five different people. Or five from 1 person? What's everyone's excuse? They better be good!

Dark Archive

Brief descriptions of the elven, dwarven, etc. dieties from Gods & Magic would be welcome in the Religion section, if anyone is looking for a super-easy article idea.

Hey, it's a great resource!

Thanks!

What types of articles do you need most?

EDIT: I'm looking at your wanted pages but wanted to know if there was something more specific.

I too will look into help when I get home tonight.

Feel free to grab stuff from either the want page or my workspace If you have other pages that you would rather work on, thats cool too!

One important question. How do we deal with the fact that all this stuff that is copyrighted by Paizo? Do we have their blessings? I am just making sure.

I just put up a stub for the Eye of Abendego. If you'd like to look over it and provide feedback, that would be great. (I'm working on citing sources right now.)

As I understand it, there have been talks with Paizo officials about what is allowed and what not. Some of the results you'll find in the Wiki Policy (Fluff, no Crunch), the most important thing I think is not simply to copy information out of the books but to phrase it in your own words.

But Yoda surely can give you a more thorough answer.

Looks like Yoda got to it already. To see the changes he made vs what you had click Here

Wow!

I had no idea this existed. Our group is currently playing a 4E campaign in Golarion and this will be a fantastic resource for our game. I'll be sure to share it with our DM. Thanks to everyone that contributed and Paizo for allowing this to happen.

EDIT: Thanks! (Didn't read well before.)

I'm not quite sure how to phrase the citations from the campaign setting with multiple authors.

It's a template {{Cite book/Campaign Setting|#}} where # is the page number. see This page for a more in depth description

Thanks to everyone who has stepped up to help on this over the last few weeks. Today's the last day to reach our goal. My main wiki page is telling me that we have 991 articles (YMMV depending on if you're logged in to the site or not.) In any case, we have just over 12 hours to get to the target number. We're so close, I know we can do it. Anyone with questions, don't hesitate to ask and someone'll help you help the wiki get to our goal.

Happy 4709 AR, friends!

Our understanding is this will fall under the same fan license that will allow for fan fiction and other online support for the campaign setting once it is released. When we started the wiki in March, we set up site wide policies on plagiarism and citations and have made extensive efforts to ensure that as many pages as possible link back to the Paizo store. The "no crunch" policy also ensures that people using the wiki as a resource will still need to purchase Paizo products and we encourage users of the site to do so.

There is precedent for many fan-created wikis to include copyrighted material online, from Wookiepedia to the similar and inspirational Forgotten Realms wiki. We make no claim to ownership of the intellectual property of Paizo, and every page contains a link to the wiki's disclaimer expressing such.

From the onset, many Paizo employees have been made aware of the site including Erik, James and Vic and we have not yet been asked to remove anything, and have even received encouragement from the same Paizonians. Early in the wiki's life, we were in contact with several employees about what we could and could not use from them, and have honored their requests thus far. None of these requests have been for the site to come down or for us to remove anything. Once an official fan web policy is released in the new year, we will make whatever changes to the site are necessary to comply with it.

The Good thing about Snowpolcalyse East (part 2) is that

1) I'm working from home tonight so i have more free time to write wiki stuff.
and
2) The girlfriend may be delayed, allowing me to write wiki stuff into the night if needed..

Get it done before the ball drops, though. That's the deadline! Also, try and have some fun. It's a holiday, after all.

3 more are needed!

Congratulations. And many thanks to all participants and especially to the creators of this splendid source of Golarion-related knowledge.

And a happy new year.

Paizo Employee Director of Brand Strategy

Wow! Thanks for all your help everyone. I think Cheddar Bearer gets the prize for the most new articles since I first mentioned the goal earlier in the month (not, of course, to discredit the work done by anyone else). When I first made the call for assistance, I really didn't think we'd make it, and we nearly didn't. Again, great work.

So now that we're in 4709, let's keep it up, even if we don't have a specific goal or deadline in mind. But give yourselves a day off. You've earned it.

Not to rain on anyone's parade but all place names, npc names, basically all proper nouns, are *NOT* open content. Doesn't that mean that this site is in violation of the OGL and therefore likely to receive a cease and desist letter at some point? The following quote is taken from this thread.

Vic Wertz (Technical Director) wrote:

The OGL also allows us to specify which parts of each product are Open Game Content (stuff that we're allowing OGL publishers to use) and which are Product Identity (stuff that we're not allowing OGL publishers to use).

For our OGL products, we specify the following:

* Product Identity: The following items are hereby identified as Product Identity, as defined in the Open Game License version 1.0a, Section 1(e), and are not Open Content: All trademarks, registered trademarks, proper names (characters, deities, artifacts, places, etc.), dialogue, plots, storylines, language, incidents, locations, characters, artwork, and trade dress.

* Open Content: Except for material designated as Product Identity (see above), the contents of this Paizo Publishing game product are Open Game Content, as defined in the Open Gaming License version 1.0a Section 1(d).

In short, our setting is generally PI, and our rules are generally OGC.

So if I am correct, and this site is reproducing Paizo owned copyrighted material, that is *not* open content, without permission, then Paizo has a legal right to demand this site cease making such content freely available. Can someone explain if I am mistaken?

In a forum for the PathfinderWiki I posted this question and cpt.kirstov replied:

cpt_kirstov wrote:

Which is why

1.all information is cited
2.we do not include crunch
3. we do not try to make $ off of it

Therefore it is not a violation.

Also we have the blessings of the paizo staff, and even they use and many have contributed to the site

So can someone clarify for me whether or not the Pathfinder Wiki is

1) Blessed by Paizo and if so
2) Why? Since it appears to post non-open content?

My post on the Pathfinder Wiki can be found HERE.

Thanks for clarifying this for me as I would like to contribute to the site but not if it will be shut down anyway!

It appears there is a chat transcript with Wes suggesting that not only does Paizo not have a problem with the Wiki, Paizo supports it. With that evidence then I am more than comfortable helping out and contributing wherever and whenever I can. I just hope that the unofficial support doesn't change later!
