Liberty's Edge

Greetings all! I'm putting this here because I check these boards more often than any other I visit.

I'm looking for advice on making money in WoW. I currently have a 52 Druid that is my main character and i'm hoping to be able to get the funds to buy the training and next mount when I hit 60.

I'm curious what others have done to make cash that has worked for them...please post your ideas or what has worked for you.

Thanks

My Word of advice: Don't sweat it. Money becomes much more plentiful once you hit outland, and you won't have to work half as much for good gear.

If you absolutely insist on making money right now, go for gathering. If you have a gathering skill, try and sell materials somewhere midway the profession chain. Lots of people are currently respeccing, and if you can provide them with materials, you will end up with a handy profit

Hell, i once paid 30 gold for a stack of Steelbloom...

Thanks! So start herbing (made him a Herbalist/Alchemy) and sell it in the AH?

Any raw materials like ore and cloth and herbs go for pretty good prices no matter the server. The Auctioneer mod for WoW really helps with things, but it was wonky after the Lich King patch a couple of weeks ago, though they may have fixed things since then. Save your non-soulbound blues and greens to sell on the AH, I get pretty good results.

Having buddies with skills helps too. I gave a stack of malachite to my engineer friend (I'm a jewelcrafter) and he turned them into mechanical squirrels, which were selling for an obscene amount on the AH. Mind you, this was just when they released the Achievement system, and you get an achievement for having a vanity pet. My engineer friend gave me all the profits, to the tune of about 50 gold or so - not a lot of money for a high level character, but plenty for my low level character.

Since you're an herbalist/alchemist, you can sell the stacks of low level herbs on the AH for pretty good - good way to get rid of inventory and still make some cash.

A good way to make easy money without spending time crafting is to take two gathering professions, like Skinning and Herbalism.
This way you just sell whatever you collect and pile the profit.

Consider also that the new fashion is Inscription, the new profession, and it needs some herbs. So collecting herbs to sell them in the auction house should be profitable.

For a bit after the Inscription patch, Herbs were retardedly expensive on the AH, and even after the decline, they are still very very profitable.

Another biggie, at least if you are horde, is wool. Go to southern Barrens and kill Quillboars for wool cloth. It sells like crazy. Maybe its just the Suramar server economy, but stacks of wool often break 5g on Horde, because nobody wants to farm Quillboars, and we don't have an instance like Stockades where its easily farmable.

Another is enchanting. Not doing it, but selling the mats. An enchanter of your level could be soloing Scarlet Monastary with a bit of care, and you can DE the soulbound blues and put the shards on the AH. Hit the Cathedral over and over, as those are high enough level to produce Small Radiant Shards, which are a primary ingredient for the Fiery Enchant, and as such sell for a good bit of coin.

Aside from that, I'd say go with mining/herbalism for gathering skills, if you just want to make bank. Skinning is good too, but takes a bit more time to start showing results.

Keep in mind as a tailoring/enchanter, you could run any cloth dropping area/instance and mass produce items to then disenchant into valuable enchanting materials.

Hope that helps!

Yes.

Herb herb herb herb. Don't even worry about making any potions, just sell the herbs.

You will be rolling in the dough in no time, especially if you either get Auctioneer or just pay attention to the herb market on your server.

Lots of Deathknights are leveling up their Inscription at the moment, which has the made herbs scarce for both Inscribers and Alchemists (who've never really had to share their resource before). This is true on my server, and I assume that it will be true for whatever server you are on.

My approach is a bit different, I believe, than most. I sell things at prices that are more reasonable to the buyer and therefore sell probably 90% or more of any auctions I put up. If it's a green magic item, typically 3X the AH starting price. Blue 4x, etc.

Basically, I figure the way to do it is selling alot of crap at decent prices rather than a few things at outrageous prices.

30 gold for a stack of wild steelbloom ? Are you INSANE ??? :)

My preferred means of income involves catering to the "battleground twink" market. If you're an Alchemist, make Swiftness Potions. A stack of 5 of these will usually sell for about 10 gold, sometimes more. Enchanters (especially now with inscribers making vellums) can make a KILLING in this market since everyone wants their level 19 character to have the biggest, baddest enchants on the market.

Also, yes, farming wool, silverleaf, and peacebloom will net you significant profits if you sell them competitively on the AH. Since you are level 52, instances like Shadowfang Keep can be solo'd for rare blue items which fetch absolutely retarded amounts on the AH (like the Assassin's Blade, which tends to sell for 500g+). You'll likely need to farm it quite a bit in the hopes that something like this will drop, however, so it's only recommended for the truly devoted grinder.

I also tend to play the AH game. Especially with metals becuase I am a miner too. Look for the median price of all the ores (can be applied to herbs/etc) and start watching the AH for a significant price drop. Its all really supply and demand, but sometimes someone (myself included) needs to make a quick gold and undercuts the competition in a signifigant manner. Buy said item/metal/herb/whatever and resell it an market value. I would say its a long term strategy, but it works.

Currently, I am profiting severely on the new expansion pack's metals like a fiend. I plan on funding my epic flyer this way ;) I may still be lvl 70, but I am running through lvl77 areas with little issues!

My Advice?

GET OUT! GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!

~laughter~ Why do you think I have never played WoW? City of Heroes / Villains sucks up WAYYYYYY too much of my time as it is without adding something else to the mix.

Thanks for the positive help!!!! Really gave me some good ideas...

Auctioneer is a add on? How does it work?

It takes a sampling of everything on the AH and tells you the average selling price it's going for (high and low price too I think, but it's been a while since I've used it).

It takes the program some time to really become useful since you really need a half dozen or so samples before you can get a good idea of what things are selling for. If your samples only see a blue item one time on the AH in a week, obviously you won't have a good idea of the average value, but it will at least give you some historic data of how much the object has moved for in the past.

Bottom line: It's a great add but requires you to do some set up work first. Well worth it though.

Another great piece of advice that someone gave me when I was going for my epic mount is hit the Scarlet Monastery. At your level you should be able to solo everything in there. Empty all your bags and run through there. You should come out with STACKS of cloth (which as Lilith said move great on the AH) and a decent amount of greens that move well too. Or find an enchanter to DE them and sell the components on the AH.

Option 2 is take a pair of your level-appropriate guildies through SM (if you're in a guild). Let them take all the BoPs (which you can't put on the auction house anyway) and you take everything else. I've done that in my guild a couple times and it worked great.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Dropping by to provide a link to Auctioneer.

I generally suggest that everyone get it and use it because it takes a lot of the guesswork and looking-up and math and annoying bits out of selling your stuff on the AH.

You just open up the AH, open up your backpack, put the item in the "post auction" slot, and hit the "post auction" button. Auctioneer inputs the opening bid and buyout price for you, generally at 5% under the average. The average price is determined by all of the prices that Auctioneer sees for the item whenever search the AH for it. The Addon builds it's own database, so the longer you have the addon, the more accurate that "5% below average" will be.
