Xaaon: Jon's motivations
Jon doesn't see himself as an Andoran soldier. He is a mercenary, combat is his business. Gorum is his chief diety, but he believes in the "fight for right", rather than just the fight.
He's also still thinking about trying to win the castle for the party (or himself) rather than for the Andorans. To do that, he'll need friends or at least someone in the Baron's forces who might believe he has their best interest in mind.
Jon is pretty widely travelled. He knows the Chels are bad news, (devil consorting and what not) and that the rich and powerful in the Andoran Republic can be just as bad when in comes to exploiting the lower economic brackets. (Check his background, poor agrarian family -- he went into soldiering out of necessity rather than choice.) In his mind that makes neither the baron, nor the general the best choice for the people of this town. If it comes down to it, he'll turn the town over to the Andorans and take the cash, but he does think he could do a better job for the people than either country, if he can somehow get the same deal as the Baron had.
He knows these common troops are just cannon fodder, probably regular guys just drafted into service, like his early days. There is an element of pity for them in his actions tonight.
Finally, Jon is a true, but unorthodox, follower of Gorum. Any warriors deserve some sort of chance. By teaching these raw recruits something, he lays the groundwork for a better battle in the future.

Thanks so much for your patience guys. I know that i've let you down once already with this game.
I don't want it to die! You're close to getting close to the Baron...
;)
Jon had some fantastic posts, as well. I'd like to do them justice by not rushing either. I love this group. Especially the tension between the polarized warriors of Gorum

Guys, discussion thread here.

I'm in one already, and I don't really have time for additional games at the moment. So thank you for the offer, but I'm going to have to pass.
Cool. Was just doing the best I could since this game has apparently died again. Let's hope someone discovers a summon DM spell.

Yeah, unfortunate that's a common happenstance around here, whether the players disappear or whether real life overwhelms DMs, or unfortunate accidents befall our gamers...I'm running three, and playing 6 or 7, many of those 6 or 7 are in limbo...with missing players or DMs, I'm the sole survivor of the Kobold trilogy players, and we haven't even left Falcon's hollow til a couple days ago, and we're on our 2nd DM as well...
