"I have known many gods. He who denies them is as blind as he who trusts them too deeply. I seek not beyond death. It may be the blackness averred by the Nemedian skeptics, or Crom's realm of ice and cloud, or the snowy plains and vaulted halls of the Nordheimer's Valhalla. I know not, nor do I care. Let me live deep while I live; let me know the rich juices of red meat and stinging wine on my palate, the hot embrace of white arms, the mad exultation of battle when the blue blades flame and crimson, and I am content. Let teachers and priests and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me. I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay, and am content."

So here it is, the beginning of the ZeFRS discussion thread! For reference, here are some links:
Gazetteer of the Hyborian Age - i.e. where are you from? :D
Our adventures will initially be set in the untamed Zingaran seaport of Karnemet, but of course, as is the way of sellswords you can be from anywhere.
Obviously, we're all going to feel our way around the rules a bit, but I'm sure it will be fun. Let the discussion begin!

So many possible choices. Any chance of a swift canter through the available deities before I tie my banner irrevocably to somewhere? Asking because I'm assuming that the names will not be directly comparable to their Earthen counterparts. I'm aware in the great scheme of things it may not matter much, but it might. Like the squid avatar by the way. Most fetching.

Remember that the Hyborian Age is Earth, but in the very distant past, so you may well be familiar with many of them.
Also there are no 'clerics' as the D&D game understands them; at best 'priests' are much like they are in the real world; normal people who practice a religion and preach, at worst they are black hearted sorcerers who serve either themeselves or some demon from the outer dark.

I'd love to see some character write ups, if people don't mind my looking over their shoulder. The setting totally enthralls me (big conan fan, I even played Age of Conan for a few months just to get the chance to finally play a priest of Set!), but the rules are not clicking for me quite yet.
Some sort of grouchy old hermit named Old Crow with talents in Natural Magic (animal control) and Natural Laws (weather control), and Madness (occasionally overcome with animal spirits, and thinks he's a wild animal...), seems like it would be fun to try, but how to purchase skills and spells and whatever escapes me.

You're welcome to join, Set. Spells are very different to D&D - if you look on the ZeFRS website you'll see some character write-ups, including a spellcaster. Basically, being a spellcaster is quite a risky undertaking involving madness and physical deformity, as well as not being very easy (you haev to quest after components and rituals). The GM and the player discuss what an acceptable spell could be and how it will work within the parameters of the particular heading it come sudner.

I'd argue that in the case of someone who truly believes herself accursed it would be pretty hindering, but OK. Probably going with some kind of disfigurement then.
Can I just check if I have this right? Presumably on the 35 points to spend unless you add in weaknesses, you could take up to 35 talents? Clearly it would be a bit stupid to do that, but in theory is that right? I am aware I am very likely being dumb here ...
