Have you ever had a character concept you were afraid to bring to the table?

Whether it was because you didn't want to alienate other players, you weren't sure you would be comfortable playing it yourself, or both? It could be something you think would have great role-playing possibilities and could even move away from the more unpleasant aspects of the character in time, it's just that you're not sure that even starting it is worth it.

Stupid Zon-Kuthon... >:(

My PC's male and he's either gay or bi.

In an Age of Worms game, I had a male half-ogre ranger character who, due to identity issues, was always trying to "find his human half".

Some time later, at the Fountain of Fortunes Folly, he got the curse of "weapon cursed: gender swap". Unfortunately, it was a very important weapon to him, and he wasn't about to let it go. So he, became a she.

Now this wouldn't have been too bad, except he was very comfortable with being a she. For backstory reasons he was very mothering, protective, and compassionate. Being female "worked" for him.

And then, an odd romance started between "him" and the human spelltheif in the party. Considering that the two of us as players are very obviously straight, the roleplaying of our PCs camradierie growing into something more definitely wierded out the other players. There were a couple of times where I wondered if maybe we'd crossed the line (it never got really bad, we did the "fade to black" when the two actually, ahem, "got together" for the first time).

Still, probably my second favorite character of all time.

Come to think of it, my first favorite (the black bard) likes to gender swap as well, thanks to potions of alter self. Hrmmm.... paging Dr. Freud...

Nah, I've (role)played an asthmatic fighter, a gnome who can't touch magic, an elf who turned his whole hunting party into females, and a wizard with Alzheimer's (roll a percentile to see if you remember how to cast that spell)..

I don't get it. What's so bad about fighting pokemon-esque creatures?

his back story he ran into a band of orcs alone, and the leader had a wand of mass sex change... and would use the command word (which was some sexist word- I didn't remember it right now) as his battle cry... after my elf looted the orcs, he was holding the wand and recounting the tale to all of the other men in his (tribe/city/town) and when he told them of the orc's battle cry the wand activated and turned all of the elf man around him to elf women, and then they all got mad cause he was screaming out sexist words, in the ensuing brawl, the wand broke...

LOL

Spoiler:
he lived like a king most of the time, but he was more or less forced to go out on adventures once a month for at least a week....
and thats how he met the rest of the party, and never returned.

Wand of mass sex change must be the best magic item ever.

My original concept for Gierixa, a PbP character, was a bit grittier than her current incarnation. But I didn't want to push my luck portraying a psychotic greenthumb online.

This is closest to my problem, I think. The concept I was thinking of was a LN/LE cleric of Zon-Kuthon that believed that pain was a necessary element of life, and that fear of pain was a fear of life. If a poor old dirt-farmer approached her begging for help for his two deathly ill children, she would make him choose which one he wanted cured and suggest that he tell that child every detail of how he came to survive his illness, saying that it would make him stronger and ready for the world. And if the father couldn't choose, well that meant that he must not care enough for either of them and was unfit to raise them anyway. She just works off some severely warped logic.

It seemed like a cool idea, but I don't know if I could keep playing a character that was so grim or if others would find it offputting even in an "evil" campaign. And I'd like to play it in something other than a flat-out evil campaign just because I see taking her towards LN more than LE, and with possible deep RP with other players taking her away from Zon-Kuthon's faith. The eventual studded skull wouldn't help either. Or the facets of her daily prayer once she got something that let her regenerate.

...I think I'll just play that cleric of Sarenrae instead....I never play evil characters anyway, so I'm wondering why this character even came up.

We had someone who wanted to play a female mogrelwoman who had been kept as the 'entertainment' slave for a band of dark dwarves....

and then there was the other time where a new player wanted to play a wemic, which was allowable under 2nd edition I think, and then proceeded to name him Satan....

Oh I misunderstood, I thought this thread was "Character Concepts you wish HADNT made it to the table. "

The one that comes to mind I don't think I would post even here. :)

Well, there was Zhordee Whiporwill, the gnome Basirian dancer I made for Living Kalamar, but never had the guts to bring to the table. ("Where there's a Whiporwill, there's a way!") I loved his pink boots.

Mostly I think gender-bendage causes a lot of issues like that though. I come up with a decent share of female concepts myself, but I kinda feel like I need to at least have one or two whole campaigns under my belt with a group before attempting such a PC.

Years ago, I decided to challenge myself in a new campaign with my old group by playing a female illusionist. Two of the three other guys thought it was so funny and unusual that they rolled up female characters too. ("I'll do it if you do it" etc..) The third other guy was the guy who always plays dwarves. He just called us nuts and rolled up a dwarf.

Our fearless DM then lovingly referred to the campaign foreverafter as "Stumpy and the Milkmaids".

Once had an illusionist that clothed herself in illusions. Swirling colors of mist. She always caused quite a stir in town.

Then there was the halfling rogue leather wearing whip using BDSM mistress. She was short lived... get it... short... lived...

In a campaign with no alignment restrictions I wanted to play a LE cleric. He would pretend to be LN, but secretly worshiped a deranged god. He would have kept a secret chamber with mutilated bodies kept barely alive, their minds long broken into insanity to honor his god. But I thought better of it and played a CN sorcerer instead who was quite boring. Not sure I could have kept that other character going anyway.

I have one campaign where I played a bard/sorcerer who was an artist...and also a complete sensualist, borderline insane. He'd get addicted to drugs, sleep with anyone who caught his fancy regardless of gender...I alternately disgusted and infuriated the players at the table.

Of course, he was also a chaos plane-touched with a 20 Cha and Int...and a 7 Wis. I kept talking the rest of the party into following my brilliant plans which would then unravel at the first unforseen complication and cause a huge fracas for us to have to (usually) hack our way out of. He's one of the most entertaining characters I've ever run.

And yes, I did have some reservations about it, but...what the heck, it's a game.
