You find he has dismounted and is leaning against the wagon having hitched his mount to the wagon.

Getting closer you notice he has pulled out a crossbow bolt something you know you didn't see any of the goblins using and is stuffing what looks like something similar to one of the herbal balls into the wound.
It doesn't appear to be working.

"Carter!" Talden shouts as he runs over to the old man. Taking a quick glance around to make sure that there were not threats in sight in he bends over to check the old man.

Seeing the crossbow bolt he turns and shouts to the others.
"Hey! Old Carter's been hit with a crossbow bolt! Did anyone see a goblin with a crossbow?"
"Hang on old man. Why did these goblins want you dead? What's going on?"

"Otis... Otis is a wizard, he's Chelish... beware change..." Old Carter gasps as he topples over his face gray as he drops the bolt.

He seems to be scrambling for something inside his tunic but whatever it is he can't reach as he falling unsconscious.

"What do you need Carter? What are you looking for?"

Talden is going to look for anything that might help.

Other than a small package about the size of maybe a wrapped up knife except very slender and normal clothing under studded leather armour is a holy symbol, but nothing else.

He is starting to have breathing problems.

Talden quickly begins to unwrap the package figuring that that is what Carter is trying to get.

Bogorin shushes the girl as she fusses over him before she treats Willy "Nae girl, tis nothing but a scratch. I got nae fear from the likes o stinkin' Goblins"

As he sees how gravely wounded Willy is Bogorin kneels down on one knee "Ye ain't gunna let no stinkin Gobbo send ye to yer maker is ya?" he jokes with the lad, yet it is obvious from the concern in his eyes that he appreciates the extent of his wounds.

As Tenna begins her healing ministrations and are gravest of Willy's injuries are healed, Bogorin claps her heartily on the shoulder and says loudly "Aye lass! Good work ye done, good work" He then extends a hand to Willy and helps him stand. "Ye dinnae be wanting tae sleep the day away with more Gobbos tae kill boy, up ye come." and will help walk him over to the wagon.

His only response to Herve's words is to glare at the man but it is apparent to most that the lordlings words do have some affect on the old dwarf.

When Talden calls out about Carter's injuries Bogorin says to Tenna, "Go on girl, I'll keep me eye on the big oaf here, go see tae ta Carter" and Bogorin helps Willy get comfortable, all the while keeping a watchful eye out for more Goblins...

"Nah, gobbo got lucky's all."

He gives Herve a cold look. "Let 'em come. That was just a scratch, 'twas. I aint scared a no little gobbos."

Willy picks up his axe and looks for more goblins.

"Where dey go?"

Tenna smiled as Talden and Boggo complimented her shooting. It helped take the edge off her nerves as she saw to Willy's wounds. We did it! We stood our ground and we made it! Then she heard Talden calling out to Carter, and looked over to see their guide fall.

"Damn!" She hurried to finish with Willy's injuries and ran over to Carter and Talden as quickly as she could, sliding to stop on the trail as she reached them. "They had a crossbow? I dont' remember seeing one!" She examined his wound and the bolt still in him. "Poisoned?" she asked Talden as she tried to tell what needed to be done to help Carter.

Heal: 17 (15+2) To use another dose of healing herbs if he needs it, to see if he is poisoned, and to see if pulling that bolt out is the smart thing to do.

Rushing across to Talden and Old Carter the first thing you notice is that the crossbow bolt Old Carter has dropped has something odd pasted to the point along with Old Carter's blood, the fact the combined paste of toxin and blood has turned it bright green makes your blood run cold.

~Poison! but what type?~ you wonder.
"Anyone carrying any anti-toxin?" you babble hopelessly.
"Unless we get him some help, maybe divine aid he won't survive long enough even to get back to Waypoint," you add as you see what Talden has unwrapped.

To Talden:

Spoiler:
Its a glowing arrow

Male Half - Elf Warrior/Ranger* (1/2)

"Poison?" Talden says a little shocked. Why does someone want Carter dead this badly?

"A glowing arrow? Is this what you need? How about your holy symbol?"

Talden takes both the arrow and the holy symbol and presses them into Carter's hand hoping that whatever it was that he was looking for would help him.

I'm going with Ranger for Talden. I wanted to build on his connection with the fey through his birthmark and still keep his martial background. Depending on how things go I might transition him towards Druid eventually.

Male Human (Taldan) Barbarian (Invulnerable Rager) 5

Willy's a Barbarian.

Bogorin's going to stay a fighter for now, and through the game, as he regains his faith, eventually Cleric. Definitly makes us a Blade heavy party though, hopefully we'll be ok without lock-pickers/trap-finders or casters for a while :P

"O-o-gre--banne," Old Carter barely manages to whisper hoarsely as his fight for consciousness ends as he slumps.

Just wanted to be sure what everyone was going for

I was planning to have her become a ranger. If we have one already and we need a rogue badly though, I can try and think of a justification for her becoming a rogue instead.

Tenna looked up when Carter passed out, panic in her eyes. "Does anyone know how to treat him? I-I don't know anything about poison! Isn't there a cure for 'em or something?" If it happened to him it could happen to us! Her hands shook as she moved them away from Carter's wound; she feared even touching the stuff.

Go Ranger. It makes a lot of sense for your character. It can't hurt to have two rangers. Besides, I'm going with the two-weapon fighting angle.

As Carter collapses in his arms and stops breathing Talden gently lays him on the ground and closes his eyes. Fists clenched at his sides he fights the anger and sorrow that resurfaces as the memories of his fight against the orcs flash through his mind. Both times people died because they didn't have all of the information. They could have done something if they just knew...

"We don't have a cure for this. Maybe, if Old Carter had been upfront about everything and we knew what to expect before leaving, then this might have been avoidable. We might have been able to save him. The only thing we can do is make sure that this comes to an end. I'll be damned if I let this happen to anyone else! I won't let this go un-avenged and I won't let anyone else suffer."

Talden almost shouts the last part as he fights to keep the tears and anger back. Taking a deep breath he tries to calm himself and focus.

"Carter said that Otis is a Chelish wizard and muttered 'beware change'. He also said something about 'ogre bane' when holding this arrow. Maybe its enchanted to kill ogres?"

Talden stands up and turns to the group. Talden was obviously having a hard time handling all of the emotions inside of him but he was trying his best to remain calm and focused. The words and questions seemed to just spill out of him and he didn't think he was making much sense.

"I think Tenna should take the arrow since she is obviously the best shot amongst us. I don't know how this thing works but you should probably save it for when you have a clear shot at the ogre. Now, how are we going to proceed? Do we try to sneak in the rear entrance as Carter seemed to think best or do we try a different approach? Let's figure this out now and if anyone has information they haven't shared then I suggest you spill it since I am getting really tired of people dying because of lack of information."

What time of day is it and how far is the hill?

Male Taldan Aristocrat 4

Given our equipment , going stealthy is not a good choice .
Anyway , the ogre knows we are here now . So let's get directly to him before he gets the idea to use the hostages against us

Let's just hide Carter's before going . There are goblins about and I don't want them desecrating him

The old dwarf joins the conversation and tsk's reproachfully "Oye! Show some respect! The man ain't dead yet. Ole Carter's a tough one, mebbe e'll pull through." He turns to Tenna “Lass, do what ye can fore ‘im. Mebbe we can put ‘im in de wagon there ‘n make him comfortable like. It’s fer sure ‘e won’t survive a trip back to the town. But mebbe this wizard’ll have sumthin tae counteract de poison.” He then turns to Herve and smacks his big hammer into the palm of his meaty hand. “Me? I ain’t much feeling like sneakin in on a bunch o stinkin’ Gobbos, Ogre o no”

As Bogorin speaks, his newfound companions can’t help but notice that he seems somehow…More. Despite his injuries he actually seems haler and heartier than ever. There’s a confidence in his manner, a vigor in his step and hard gleam in his eye. It is almost like this mission and the fight with the Goblins is bringing back some part of himself that he had long ago gave up to the drink. Just as this impression is settling in though, he grabs his flask of ale and takes a long deep pull “Ah!” and he wipes his beard.

“Now, unless ye all plan tae stand aroun’ ‘ere all the day, I says we gets a move on” and with that he sets down his hammer and shield and bends to gently lift up the unconscious Carter and carry him over to and gently place him in the wagon.

Left to his own devices, Brallin had been wandering the winding roads and trails of Varisia for weeks. Abandoning his responsibilities as an apprentice shaman of the Tamiir-Quah, he's resisting a fate that would call on him to accept his magical talents as inescapable.

He's spent his last few weeks living off the land; gathering simple foods and trapping small animals in the wilds has provided him with everything he's needed. Except a challenge.

Brallin had spurred his mount on through both day and night, searching. In his headstrong manner, he had been looking for a fight. Hearing the sounds of battle now, his heart beat in his chest. And here he thought today would be boring.

Speeding out through a clearing, he surveys the scene. Dead goblins, and a merchant's crew, standing around a fallen man.

Brallin calls out: "H--", but his voice betrays him. He hasn't spoken to another person in weeks. Clearing his throat, he tries again; "Hey! Are you alright? Is anyone hurt?"

To those looking at him, they would see a young man, a boy by most standards, staring back at them. His hair is close cropped, and a series of ritualistic tattoos and scarring betray his Shoanti heritage. Clad in tanned leather hides, a long, spear-like weapon is hooked into his riding gear.

Talden grabs his axe, stands up, and turns to face the stranger as he approaches. At first wary that this individual might very well be the wizard Otis that they are looking for he relaxes a little as he sees the tatoos and markings of a Shoanti. Though he looked more boy than man Talden had always enjoyed the stories merchants would tell of the wild Shoanti and knew better than to underestimate one. Besides, although Talden was over 22 winters old he didn't look much older than this stranger and he was more than just a boy.

Talden wasn't sure why but he felt a strange tug at his soul, a sense of connection with this stranger, as if the spirits of the land were telling him that this Shoanti was blessed by them as well. Talden could feel the birthmark on his chest, a gift from the spirits of the land or so his mother told him, tingle a little as the Shoanti drew closer; something that had only happened once before when Talden had met a fairie as a boy.

"Greetings Stranger. I am Talden Skard of Waypoint and though we may have a few scratches among us unless you can cure poison then there is little that you can do to help our injured. Let me warn you though that there is a band of goblins in the area, of whom you see a few dead members of, led by an ogre and a wizard. My compatriots and I are off to deal with the menace and rescue two of our fellow townsman who they kidnapped."

Taking a few steps closer to the Shoanti Talden continues.

"My instincts tell me to be cautious with you. You might be the very wizard responsible for the poisoned arrow that injured our guide but the spirits of the land tell me otherwise. Quickly explain yourself for we must be off."

Shaking his head solemnly, he dismounts from his horse and approaches the wounded man and his crew. He is unarmed, and displays himself as such, hands in the air. "I must confess, I have no skill with a bow and arrow. It was not mine that felled him, but perhaps I can inspect it. I am...I was...a healer."

Brallin moves forward to inspect the wound, the blood, and the arrow; his own energy reaching into the wounded man, desperately trying to keep him on this side of existence.

"And, when you go galloping toward the goblins, what shall you do with this man? He is quite hurt."

Heal 20. Either to determine the cause of suffering, or to lend it as a saving throw for Carter. Also, touching the man 'stabilizes' him, thanks to my Sacred Touch trait.

Spoiler:
Just one look at the wound which has some druidic herbal remedy smothered on it tells you its some kind of changeling poison, the remedy the old man has used has slowed its effect but the only way to save him is to find the assassin that shot him and find the antidote because no assassin no matter how depraved would ever use this type of poison without access to the antidote.

Male Taldan Aristocrat 4

We have several solutions but neither is a good one

We can try to hide him there . We can try to hide him near the cave entrance or we can bring him with us

The first information we need is how movable he is . Would putting on a moving cart aggravate his condition ? Can we lug him along in the ogre's lair without harming him ? Healerman, what do you think ? Tenna, help him tend Carter .

"Well, by the looks of it, we have only one possible cure. I'd say that we have to find whoever poisoned him, and shake them around a bit to get an antidote. I'm not sure leaving him anywhere is safe; the last thing I would want is some animal helping themselves to lunch while he's unconscious. Or worse. I say we take him with us into the cave, until we can find a safe spot to lay him down."

Willy smiles at the newcomer.

"Brallin, ya say? My name's Willy. Lets just put 'im in the wagon. Here," Willy picks up Old Carter and gently lays him in the wagon. He then gets back in the driver's seat and grabs the reins.

Brallin simply nods and goes to retrieve his mount.

"We better get in there, then. Before the poison gets worse. Who is this guy, anyway?"

"His name is Carter. He spent much of his youth adventuring until he lost his arm in a fight. Since then he has served as adviser, instructor, and guide for the Waypoint militia. He's got a lot of experience with the dangerous and so when times got tough or things got dangerous the townsfolk always looked to him for guidance. He taught me much of what I know."

"He unfortunately lost both of his sons to the ogre we're after when it attacked a couple of days ago. He lead us out here supposedly looking to rescue two of our townsfolk who were kidnapped by the ogre but I think he came out looking for vengeance. Few people know the area as well as he does and he has apparently known about this ogre and the goblins for a few years now. Why nothing was done sooner I'm not sure but right before he collapsed he mentioned something about a Chelish wizard named Otis."

"This will be dangerous. We'll be facing goblins, an ogre, and a wizard. We'd certainly appreciate any help we can get and if need be I'll split my reward with you, but I want you to understand what were up against before committing yourself. Enough people in this land have suffered because of lack of knowledge without adding one more."

Male Half - Elf Warrior/Ranger* (1/2)

As Brallin goes to get his mount Talden can't help but smile and chuckle. For whatever reason seeing the Shoanti warrior lifted his heart.

"My mother always said the spirits favor the brave. And here, when the town can barely muster a force to rescue its own, a few brave souls gather to fight and Gozreh sends aid on the north wind, a Shoanti warrior. Welcome Brallin. I've heard stories about Shoanti but I've never heard that that they had wings."

Turning to retrieve his horse he says,

"Let's go friends. The gods see fit to bless us and the spirits have no love of ogres or goblins. If this is going to happen, let's get it done."

Tenna had been moving through a half-aware haze soon after Carter collapsed. She only vaguely remembered nodding as Talden suggested she take the arrow Carter had been carrying. And when the stranger appeared, it was starting to feel like a dream; she felt so disconnected with what was really happening, like she couldn't believe she was really there in that situation, with someone dying in front of her.

She tried to help with the newcomer's treatment of Carter at Herve's suggestion, but she felt so useless after her failure earlier that she just stood by, mostly ineffectual and grasping her liripipe nervously. [i]Snap out of it, damn you! Concentrate if you want to get through this![/ooc] Tenna shook her head, focusing on the present.

She looked around as everyone started to move again, worried. "Should we trying to keep cover, at least on Carter? What if whoever shot him is still watchin' us?" Perception : 15

No problem

From whats been said two of the goblins fled into the tall grass behind the wagon, two more fled into the forest off to the right in front whilst the remaining three on the left fled towards the hill and where Old Carter indicated where the Ogre's lair was.

However you do remember seeing Old Carter trying to control his rearing mount when the first band of goblins charged at him, considering how they behaved you suspect someone was controlling them but that control was lost right around the time Bogorin and Willy charged the largest group at the rear.

As far as you can see there's noone lurking around to ambush you.

Talden's words stop Brallin in his tracks. No, not a warrior. A coward. A deserter. A dabbler in magic. He would never be recognized as a warrior by his tribe, but this young man already saw through all of that, and straight into my heart, he thought to himself.

"Then let us show these goblins the true strength of the North Wind!"

Female Human (Chelish) Commoner 1/Ranger 2

Tenna quickly checked over her equipment, making sure everything was ready for their approach.

"Did..." she hesitated to bring it up. She knew next to nothing for certain about goblins. "Did they seem to be actin' strangely to the rest of you? I mean...the way some of 'em were just standin' around? And how they just ran off right after?"

"The standing part, yes. The running part, no. Goblins are cowards who run from pretty much anything scarier than a loud noise. Unless there's a lot of them. Then, they'll stick together to bring down a demon. Don't ask me why."

Brallin's ready to join you guys, if you want him. Are we going in the cave?

Male Taldan Aristocrat 4

My father always told me that goblins are crazy.
'You never can plan what they'll be doing in combat but happlily their so called tactics tend more to hurt them than humans '
You can sense that Herve is quoting someone there .
Herve move towards the ogre's lair

Male Human (Taldan) Barbarian (Invulnerable Rager) 5

"Come on Bogey, let's go!" When Bogorin joins Willy in the wagon, Willy gets the wagon rolling after Herve.

Hopeless, can we tell if we are close enough to the Ogre's den to proceed on foot? Or are we back on the horses and wagon again for a bit?

If in the wagon: "Now mind de bumps dere lad, ole Carter back there needs as gentle a ride as ye kin give 'im"

If on foot: Bogorin cinches his armor around his gut yet again, grumbling as he does, and checks all his gear. He then moves to the front and tries to walk as quietly as he can, making a horrible job of it. After a few moments he stops and seems to think about something for a moment. Then he grimaces and says "Ach! Tis no use 'o me trying tae be all quiet like. De idea 'o sendin' one 'o you youngins ahead without me don't sit well a'tall. But mebbe it might not be a bad idea fer one 'o you quiet types to scout on ahead jus a wee bit tae see what lies ahead o' us, eh?" It's obvious he doesn't like the idea but one gets the impression he is trying to do what he thinks might be best for the party. Instead of just bellowing and charging straight in as he'd much prefer to do.

Male Taldan Aristocrat 4

Boggo, there is no point sending a scout ahead , they already know we are coming. Better you and me stay at the front ready to intercept the charge of the ogre .

Not yet inclined to readily agree with the somewhat arrogant lordling, Bogorin feels a bit frustrated in that he completely agrees with his sound tactical logic. He doesn't speak for a moment but then finally Harrumphs and says "Fine boyo, that suits me better anyhoo." He then fixes a pointed glare at the young man" An' me names' Bogorin. Only me friends kin call me Bogo" he glares for a bit longer then stomps off, hiding his grin under his beard at making his point on the upstart young lord. He is also amused by the image in his head of the youth wetting his britches and running screaming at what Bogorin assumes to be the lad's first encounter with a "Charging Ogre"

You can still move closer either on horseback and even wagon as the trail does split off in that direction however you do have to decide which way you want to try and enter the ogre's lair and then there's the surviving goblin's and whoever shot Old Carter somewhere between you and there.

Ahead of you the trail splits off with one side heading towards your destination another moves closer to the forest, but it will be a good while before you have to decide which approach you want to try to enter the ogre's lair.

Unseen a figure watches on as the group moves on.
She briefly ponders on their destination before moving quietly back into the depths of the forest leaving the two goblin bodies hidden in the bush behind her.
The elf barely flicks her hair out of her face.
"I wonder what the master will think of this?" she wonders as she rubs a bracelet on her wrist and vanishes.

*******************************************************************

The assassin stayed in hiding.
He shifted form briefly from his original goblin disguise and into something more acceptable before heading back the way he had approached.
"Mistress?" the goblin asked.
"Never mind, they're still heading for the cave, we will need to warn Otis before they encounter the Ogre. The ceremony mustn't be interrupted, we've come too far to be stopped by a band of wannabe adventurers'!" she hissed briefly assuming another form.
Turning she heads deeper into the grassland hoping her approach would allow her to reach her contact in case these adventurers' actually got past their guard...

*********************************************************************

Otis sneezed.
Looking around he frowned and returned his attention to the engraving before him.
"Are you sure this is necessary?" he asked seemingly to vacant space.
"Yesss" the whispered reply didn't appease him.
He sighed returning to finishing the engraving in the stone floor using the accumulated silver to highlight the runes and sigils.

And then the scene returns to the heroes bodly deciding their fate...

oooooh! Great Drama! Love it! This adventure just got dialed up several notches for me! Whoo-hoo! =)

As we wouldn't want to leave Carter alone in the wagon, let's assume we continue on with the wagon and horses until we can't anymore.

Bogorin calls out to the group "Be on yer toes now kiddies. Dere be more foes about or I be a beardless Gnome!" Putting action to word Bogorin Keeps a steady eye out (1d20+3=13) for any sign of trouble. Yet his still brimming worry over Dale makes him somewhat less vigilant than he should be.

He then fixes a pointed glare at the young man" An' me names' Bogorin"

Herve looks surprised then a little sheepish

"Oh sorry , everyone was calling you Bogo , I thought it was your name ... What is your family name ? '

Herve intends to go the obvious way into the lair . no skulking around for him :)

As the group starts to move towards the hill Talden scans the woods and lands around them before heading to the front of the group (Perception check = 19).

"So how are we going to go in? Carter mentioned there was the front entrance past the guards and the rear entrance through a cave. What with the sunrods and vials I think Carter intended to head in the back door. I suggest we go that way as well. He knew more about what was going on than we do and he didn't want to use the front door."

Talden continues to scan the country-side (Perception check = 18).

"Dats fine wit' me. We can be all sneaky-like through the back door."

To Bogorin:

"I'm your friend aint I, Bogo?"

Unless I;m misunderstanding something, from what Hopeless said, we still have a ways to go until we reach the caves...

"Aye that's a sound plan lad...assumin' ole Carter knew what e' was about o course..." Bogorin responds to Talden, giving the lad an admiring look 'Young Talden seems to be shapin up to be a fine warrior' Bogorin muses. 'Long as e' kin keep 'is 'ead when the fighting gets tough 'e should do jus' fine'

Bogorin turns to Willy with a serious look and seems to think seriously for a moment "Well, ye ain't too pretty, an ye don't stink too sweet so, I guess if ye kin hold yer ale as well as he hold that wee axe o yours, I suppose I kin let ye call me friend" an he finally smiles and winks and gives the big man a hearty slap on his shoulder which staggers him a bit. Somewhat surprising considering the difference in their sizes...unless one knows Dwarves of course.

Bogorin attempts to sit himself slightly more comfortably on the wagon bench, slaps it and says to Willy "All right lad, let's git this box movin'"

Tenna remained silent and frowning at the woods around them. She wished she could share Bogorin's cheer. Instead she tried to follow Talden's lead and kept her eyes open as she rode near the back of the group, trying to keep an eye on the trees and their new Shoanti companion at the same time.

Never seen his like before. And him just showin' up... Tenna's stomach twisted on itself. She couldn't shake the idea of countless goblins hiding in the shadows watching their every move. She was grateful Herve had shot down the idea of sending scouts ahead.

He left us the choice . This means that there might be disadvantages to the rear entrance also . If it begins with a cave , there might be climbing involved and we can't do so with Carter. I would prefer trying the main entrance first .

Brallin remained silent for the most part. Still testing the waters of this new group, he rode behind the others, keeping up a rear guard. Though there was no foe in sight, his hand reflexively kept slipping to his weapon.

I'm cool for going in any way. Brallin is not going to rock the boat anytime soon.

Ok new plan , when we arrive at the lair , Brallin charges inside shouting at the top of his lungs ........... you said any plan was good to you !!!

When I said I was cool for going in any way, I meant I was indifferent to which entrance we took. I'm sure the goblins know we are coming.
