I'm withholding judgement on Elan's development until I see more. This may have been one of those rare "lucid" moments for an otherwise addled mind. ;)
Personally, I loved V's decision and his rationale. I groaned inwardly when Kubota started down the "I'll weasel my way out of this at trial" road. The resolution for that entanglement was far more satisfying...and presents options for even more enjoyable complications once the "goody goodies" try to find out what happened.

My opinion is that V did the right thing here. his logic made sense. Elan prolly woulda gone for the whole trial thing and V is right: They have a whole bloody world to save. Their job isn't to pander to the whims of a group of paladins. the fact the Elan tied him up was enough indication of his evilness (as V explains), and I'm happy someone is finally (or still, rather) keeping his mind on the bigger picture.
Elan's development was somewhat surprising though. personally, I think it's a sign of his growing into the bard/swashbuckler role. He's definiatly more savvy now then when he was in the beginning. his sarcasm was awesome though, and I had almost forgotten he could do illusions.

Do we wish to put this in literary terms, noting that Elan's rolemodels, mentors, and helpers have almost all been stripped away in one form or another, and thus he is at the stage in the cycle of a quest hero in which he must learn to be that hero himself instead of relying on others?
Or do we just want to look at V and say "Oh, burn!"? :)

No, the other way around, he is the PC incarnate.
You've all recognized his behaviour at your gaming table: To hell with roleplay, I am killing him now ;>

I think this strip kills my charm monster theory...
Oh well, someone will get charmed. There's a gun above the fireplace, someone will use it.
I prefer to think someone will point out the gun, and the owner will take it down to demonstrate that it's an oversized lighter with a hidden dagger inside.
(I know i'm forcing the metaphor, but I'm sure you get what I mean)

That would be fitting as well. Good point.

But not my Alignment Shift theory!
Of course, you can make the argument that V was just being coldly logical - but that is the road to Neutral Evil, isn't it?
