An interesting idea for a specific fighter class ability might be this:
Fighting Charge (Ex): A fighter may charge up to his normal movement rate as a standard action rather than a full-round action. This charge must be in a straight line, without intervening obstacles, creatures, or difficult terrain.
A fighter may use a fighting charge even if he has already made a 5-foot step or a normal move in the same round, and the charge need not be in the same direction as any previous move.
This would help fighters actually be more flexible on the battlefield by not being limited to straight lines, avoiding obstacles, difficult terrain, and even OTHER fighters, and would also help with the fighter's lack of tactical movement. Yes, you could use your move action to carefully move around such and so and get in position for the charge, then use your standard action to dive in and crash the party.
Thoughts?

I think this ability
a) should not be allowed if already made a 5' step, but still work after making a move action. I think the rule that you can't 5' step if you make other movement should stand. If your intent is to let the fighter get an extra 5 feet of movement, then let the ability grant them a +5' enhancement bonus to speed during their charge, but not let them avoid an AoO while they move 5 feet, then take a move action, and then charge. It should also note that their standard action charge only lets them move up to their speed, since normally a charge allows movement up to double your speed, since it is a full round action
b) probably be a feat. I think the idea of better battlefield mobility should also be open to characters that fill more of a skirmisher role, such as the barbarian, ranger, monk, and rogue.

I think I did say that - "move your normal speed" or some such, as opposed to "double normal" for a charge. Perhaps my wording was not clear enough.
I don't mind them making a 5' step on top of it, with all that that implies. The idea was not just to beef up their speed but enable them to maneuver and THEN charge.

I don't necessarily disagree with this. I was actually thinking even more so of the paladin as being somebody who is probably into charging and might get good use out of something like this.
