Trackless Step

Classes: Barbarian, Fighter, and Ranger

Why is it that the Ranger, who has been the Master of Tracking since 1st edition doesn't get Trackless Step? I personally think they should get this at an earlier level than a Druid does, or at the very least they should get Trackless Step as one of their Favoured Terrain bonuses.

Good point. It's not like it's some knock your socks off awesome ability. Throw em a frickin bone!

I think it's fine at 1st level, though I also like tying it to favored terrains.

In fact, I'd go a step further any time you're in a favored terrain, you get trackless step and (essentially) woodland stride. You would just revise WS to be like the scout's flawless stride.

So, just to sum up, subsumed under Favored Terrain, the following rules text:

Any time a ranger is in his favored terrain, he cannot be tracked. He can leave a trail if desired. A ranger in his favored terrain also can move through his favored terrain (including natural undergrowth) at his normal speed and without taking damage or suffering other impairment. However, terrain that has been magcially manipulated can still affect him.

You could put a qualifier on it that it does not provide any bonus to Climb, Swim, or other unusual movement types.

Rangers don't get Woodland Stride until 8th-level normally. While I'm fine with them also getting Trackless Step, I think that drastically reducing the level they get them is not the best idea. I'd rather see rangers get Fast Movement in favoured terrains.

I'd counter that I in no way think woodland stride is an appropriate ability for a class to get at 8th level. Wimp city in my book.

As to fast movement in favored terrains, that works for me. It accomplishes much the same goal.

I believe that the thinking is that druids get Nature's Stride and Trackless Step really early on because they're manifestations of their druidic power or nature looking out for them.

It makes sense (even if the power is seems weak by 8th) for rangers to have to learn the ability manually and thus develop it later. After all, if a druid breaks their vows, they lose all their magical abilities, including Nature's Stride. The ranger simply doesn't.

i agree

10 extra feets and trackless step is adecuate for a ranger in his favored terrain
