What if the Ranger was to start out with a base spell list and as the class gains favored terrain special abilities it also gained spell that complimented that terrain. This could work sort of like the Cleric, with its domain powers.
This is actually a fun idea. Perhaps one spell of each level to go with each favored terrain.
I like it. If I had more time I'd do the leg work myself, but perhaps an enterprising soul wants to work up a sample list of "favored terrain spells." The sad part is, of course, that this would be much easier if we were using non-SRD sourcebooks like Frostburn, Sandstorm, Stormwrack, etc., but we could probably work something up even without those.

Backwards compatibility, mostly. It's essentially dead in the water as the new default. As an option it has more promise, but not in a core book - it's the sort of thing that goes best in a splat or other product release somewhere down the line.
Fair enough. I agree with you, as I didn't mean making it the default, just an option later on.

I have been thinking for a while now that the ranger list needs a small amount of expansion. The beast shape spells (at the very least) seem like probable additions.

That is fantastic! I hope both Rangers & Paladins gain a caster level equal to thier Class level.

I agree with almost all of this. I don't think all of these suggestions should be implemented, likely any single one would be a huge help.
Agreed, Ranger & Paladin Spellcasting are too little, too late.
has anyone given any thought or testing to giving Rangers (and Paladins) Bard casting progression?Just a thought.

There has been quite a few ideas bandy about here I like. I am one of those that equates Ranger to Druid as Paladin to Cleric. But that's primarily how I play them. Hunter's Mercy and Hunter's Eye would be nice inclusions for Rangers as would Faerie Fire. The idea of giving Paladins and Rangers Bard spell progression is a neat idea as well.
