Templates

General Discussion (Prerelease)

Will Pathfinder continue using templates? I hope so. In fact, I believe that some 'races/monsters' should be templates, such as the Aasimar or Tieflings or the Genasi.

Note: The same logic could even apply to the Half-races (Half-Elf and Half-Orc), but these are core races, so the situation there is different.

Liberty's Edge

no templates i hope except ofr vampires, undeads and similar things

i am tired ofseeing people trying to play their elven/half vampire/half-dragon mixed with awesome, some arcane class and mixed with odd prestigue classes...

I am sure that we will have templates in the game, but since they are not part of the standard races package, I am going to table this discussion for a bit and move this to the general discussion forum.

As for making the mentioned races templates, I like the idea of planar templates, such as celestial and fiendish, but at the same time, I like the Aasimar and Tieflings as their own distinct race for ease of use. I am thinking I would keep the same distinction in any monster book we might do. That said, I am always open to debate.

Anyway, even if the aasimar, tiefling and genasi stay as races by themselves, on a LA+0 (as i think they will be), it is easy to use them as a template LA+1 on another race.
Ex: Dwarf + earth genasi for an elemental dwarf, sylvan elf + aasimar for an arborean elf (eladrin)...

Love templates. The Advanced Bestiary and now the Complete Book of Templates are my favorite books!!

More please sir.

D'oh. My bad Justin. You have the book title correct -- as I purchased it on you or Pygon's advice. ;)

I would definitely like to see what Paizo is going to do the Half-Dragon template. ;) After seeing the Dragonblood subtype in Races of the Dragon, I keep wondering if the subtype would be better for Half-Dragons than the actual Dragon type. Reason being that the subtype emphasizes that Half-Dragons are neither dragons nor their non-dragon kin, but both.

I second the planetouched template idea, and maybe a new way of showing templates.

Should be easy enough:

Aasimar Template (with an early take on my version of templates, or maybe PC race templates):

Aasimar CR +1; LA +1
Inherited template for Humanoids; Change to Outsider (native) gain subtype (augmented [humanoid])
Senses gain Darkvision 60 ft. (+60 ft.)
------------------------------------------
DEFENSE
------------------------------------------
Gain resist acid 5, cold 5, elec 5
------------------------------------------
OFFENSE
------------------------------------------
Gain Spell-like abilities (Cl = character level)
1/day - daylight
------------------------------------------
STATS
------------------------------------------
Wis +2, Cha +2
Languages gain celestial
Bonus Languages gain Draconic, Dwarven, Elven, Gnome, Halfling, Sylvan
Skills Perception +2

Ah, it's cool. You are far from the first person to make the same mistake. Awesome book isn't it?

Love your idea for a Template format, Kae Yoss. Good idea.

Love the templated aasimar too. Just too bad that in my game world I've made them into their own race with their own persona, and not only "celestial granchildren" of the monster manual.

But anyway, I'll use this idea when I dm on some other game world, or better yet, use this instead of the Half-Celestial template (too strong for my taste and to be viable to a player...).

Thanks. When I'm back home and make it to the PC today, I'll see whether I can do the Tiefling, too.

I would like to see the planetouched left as there own races.
