Grapple

General Discussion (Prerelease)

Ok as DM I wanted to poll some opionions about how to handle attacking grappled characters. I read the rules and though they where pretty clear to a point as far as one on one goes, what they failed to clarify for me is this. Party member A is grappling badguy and party member B wants to hit badguy with big sword. To me unless he is pinned there should be a chance that he hits his own party member. Same thing if party member c wants to shoot at badguy he has a chance to hit the wrong person. So beta still never answered this question for me and I know it will come up in game play. When they are pinned they are considered helpless but until they are pinned I look at it that they are rolling around jocking for position so trying to hit the right one is not a sure thing. So what are peoples thoughts on this or the official ruling if you know it?

If it doesn't say, I would just say there's just the normal chances from firing into melee (unless you have that Feat).
I don't think melee is effected at all. I'm not sure, but I think even if you have them pinned, there would still be the miss chance from firing into melee (without the Feat)

Grappling is not rolling around, I think you have watched to many movies. First of all, it is harder then you think to get someone on the floor without using punches and kicks unless your are much stronger.

And once both combatants are on the floor rolling is just a little part of grappling. And in a 6s round you get more then enough chances to stab someone on the floor without hitting the wrong guy.
Also, as I said, they might have never hit the floor and are just grappling in a stand up position.

I am talking about this from experience since in RL I have done free style grappling (like in Ultimate Fight competitions) in my martial arts class for a few years.

As a player in the group, while I don't necessarily like the rule it has made sense to me. My issue with the viewpoint of finding a clear shot within 6 seconds, then why bother with a penalty for ranged weapons firing into melee? I'm sure there is going to be some time during that 6 seconds that there is a clear shot that wouldn't hit your allies.

I find it rather silly that the guy with a bow standing 10 feet away suffers a -4 penalty to shoot the opponent being grappled, but the guy with a two-handed sword standing 5 feet away can whack away to his heart's content....
