I agree with Abe. One of my more interesting concepts involved a halfling barbarian who used thrown weapons (darts, spears, javelins, etc) with the feats needed to excel in his chosen field of battle while still being decent in melee.

You must have liked the "Axethrower" feat from PGtoF then! (let's you use STR instead of DEX on thrown weapon attack rolls!)

Well if Dwarves and Gnomes keep their attackbonuses against goblins and reptilians, then goblins and kobolds should get the same bonuses against dwarves and gnomes. Goblins and Kobolds can both be quite angry little fellas and goblins methematically cant be less involved in conflicts with dwarves than dwarves are involved in conflicts with goblins. They should hate them equally. As for Kobolds vs Gnomes, if only one side should get the hatred bonus here, it would be the kobolds, after all it was Kurtulmak who was crippled by Glittergold, not the other way around. So why should gnomes hate kobolds?
"Grarrrrr, you damn kobolds you let your god be buried alive in a mine that collapsed because of what our god did, prepare to die!"

Well, after playing a halfling for the last two months with the PRPG rules... I say he doesn't need the +1 bonus with thrown weapons anymore. He's fantastic enough! The -1 to grapple instead of -4 is already a big boost, and the +2 to Acrobatics and +4 to **STEALTH** (not just "Hide") are simply kickass.

Anyone else noticed how good they are?

Drop the +1 for thrown/sling attacks.

Seems the ammo becomes so heavy for a race that is already hurting from an encumbrance penalty I often find it a useless bonus. The -1 Strength and different dice on damage from thrown weapons also makes it silly. I have played halflings for years and except for the surprise round never threw a darn thing at an enemy.

While I don't want the halflings' Thrown Weapon Bonus cut, I (boldly) suggest (like others before me) that it could be made into a Racial Feat.

I absolutely don't like 'Defensive Training', and Hatred' is a bit boring... how about if you got to choose a monster type these bonuses apply against? Maybe your PC's clan has defended their clan-holds against Aberrations instead of Giants? I think that would add more flavour to these abilities, although I wouldn't mind 'Defensive Training' being cut completely.

Another option would be to give a bunch of "alternative" Racial Abilities, and you pick from them. Or from thematically fitting General Feats... for example, you don't want 'Greed'? Alright, take a Skill Focus (Armorsmith) or Endurance instead.

Thoughts?

I'll second this, more choice to the player, especially if the Race's Favored Classe Bribe stays the way it is.

use Daggers or javilins and 1/2 weight vs. 3/4 capacity still puts them ahead

Keep that topic where it is please we are talking halfling here.

I'm all for keeping and restoring Halflings to thier former glory
little things like this instill roleplay and make each species special
They should have something that matters at high levels, so it ALWAYS makes a noticeable difference within each character class
something more meaningful than just numbers ie different stats
Something that sets them apart, not necessarily better or worse in a class.
Racial and Cultural feats are best, they allow customising for the setting.
Should maybe be talents instead though, sounds more appropriate
A DM knows their gameworld best
Let them assign which talents are mandatory, available to purchase (somehow), and/or disallowed.
This helps them describe the gameworld, setting, and region.
Options rather than "every Halfling is like this" allows for Halfling cultures.
same goes for every species
just because they hate orcs in general, shouldn't mean they are all fanatical about it or even agree with thier society.

please don't strip the life out of it, it's a roleplaying game :(
put more in instead, further from hack 'n slash bunny stomping
albeit a good old school dungeon crawl occaisionally, does make a nice change of pace for those of us now turning gray ;)
