Spoiler:

Urthula smiles broadly. "So it is said, so it is seen, so let it be done."

And your demon can't contain itself any longer, It breaks forth a burst of laughter, and your body can't help but spasm from it. If Urthula notices, she doesn't say anything.

She dismisses the servant again, this time with a long string of careful directions, in a language you don't understand. She turns back to you, satisfied. "I shall see to the Deputy, never fear.

"But you, I pray, wait here for a little while. When I have prepared these small vessels, take them to your new-found and fast-held companions. Those who quaff this elixir will find themselves immune to all deadly poisons, whether drunken or injected, for a day's time.

"The elixir must be drunk quickly, in one great swallow, and the recipients should hold their breath for as long as possible afterwards."

Urthula asks, "Now, where did you say these friends of yours are headed?"

Spoiler:
I don't have my book here, so I could be completely wrong... I thought that animal companions summoned as part of the Animal Domain didn't disappear as the spell. I thought they stayed until dismissed or destroyed. I think I had specifically stated that it was his class ability and not one of his spells. Of course, if it vanished as a result of reaching 0 hp, please disregard. I'll post my action after you reply about this. Tahnks.

Ahead of you, perhaps twenty feet, lies a dead man, wearing a dark, loose-fitting garment. To your right, the horses are still whinneying, nervously. You hear movement in the rooftop, presumably Grumblenaught (although you can't see up there to tell) and you can see a brief flurry of motion that tells you there's something moving rapidly atop the berm. A preternaturally silent something.

Sounds good. I'm presuming that "dead man" ahead of me is NOT the "threatening moaning-zombie/spirit" type of dead man? :-)

Anyhow, I have a while until my next round comes around, so I'll see what happens...
Wary of the berm's direction (make any Perception checks for me, of course)

Gavgoyle,

Thanks for the correction: Martaug has the Animal domain power as a special druid ability, and the animal domain Summon Nature's Ally lasts until dismissed or destroyed. Got it.

Hey, Grumblenaught, the wolf didn't disappear; my mistake.

Martaug, I'm assuming the wolf is attacking again, even under the effects of a temporary negative level? If so, check the spoiler.

Spoiler:

He 1d20 + 3 = 16 hits for another 1d6 + 1 = 3 points of damage. And this time 1d20 + 3 = 20 he succeeds in tripping the undead creature, pulling its leg out from under it.

Ulrich's corpse attacks back, from prone. Again, his space around his hand seems to ripple with energies, but the wolf dodges far faster than he can maneuver himself, and he can't connect.

Are you doing anything else?

Martaug rears back and hurls his shortspear at the downed mockery of his former friend. His sense of offense at the desecration of such a good man fuels his aim and the spear slices through the air straight and true.

Crit confirmation: Crit confirmation. (1d20+1=11). No crit.

The spear cleaves into the abomination cleanly and viciously.

Martaug, your spear hits true. If your target were actually a living man, you would have pierced an artery, but as it stands, there is only a shortspear sticking out of the dead meat of Ulrich's inner thigh.

Outraged, he bellows, "They're neighbors! Or, worse, more of those damned constables! Kill them! Keep only the wife and child alive! Everyone else is an open vessel!"

Deserach begins to incant strange words of power, moments later the smell of the sun baked desert surrounds him followed by the taint of noxious fumes as he summons forth a slight glob of sand that faintly glows green, within moments it has taken forth the shape of a narrow hard dart and at the wizards direction streaks toward the shadowy figure below.

standard action to use my supernatural ability to cast Acid Dart at the shadow below, assuming that I have line of sight.

ranged touch attack: 1d20+3=10

Move Equiv. draw scimitar, although my faith in its ability to defend me from this shadowy beast is wavering.

Female Human (Taldan) Fighter 2

Kara, noting its resistance to what appear to be normal blows, ready an action to attempt to trip the creature should it try to move past her to get to Orislav or Deserach, as they are more suited to getting rid of this creature.

Deserach, you throw your acid dart, but the umbral creature just steps aside and lets it pass by. He looks at it with a bit of surprise and the snaps its head around to look at you. It locks eyes and grins insanely.

Kara, looks like it's going after Deserach.

In fact, it is. It glances as Orislav for a moment just to throw you off, then launches itself at Deserach, triggering Kara's readied action.

Kara, the bastard sword isn't designed as a special trip weapon, and you haven't yet learned improved tripping techniques, so your attempt draws an Attack of Opportunity from the shadow. 1d20 +3 = 4 (pff!) It swings casually and wildly in your direction.

The SRD states that incorporeal creatures cannot fall or take falling damage. I'll allow a "trip" attempt representing you sweeping your blade through it, trying to get it somehow discombobulated. 1d20 + 4 = 16 But you don't make the 15 + CMB threshold.
Excellent tactics, foiled by the vagaries of a d20.

And the shadow moves to H15 and lunges for Deserach. 1d20 + 3 = 18, which ... misses!

And then Orislav calls forth the righteous energies of the positive plane.

Orislav: You still have 4 hp of damage from the fight this afternoon, as well as Constitution damage. You heal back the hit point damage
Kara: You still have 6 hp of damage from the fight this afternoon, as well as Con damage. You are healed another 3 hp.
Yalka, you certainly recognize the feel of the rain and storm behind you.

The shadow attempts to resist the positive energy 1d20 +4 = 11. Its DC is 10 + 1/2 your level (min. 1) + your Charisma modifier = 12. It takes full damage (1d6 = 3), and, more to the point, covers its face and looks for a place to flee next round.

The Shadow turns and attacks Orislav, moving into and through his square. (Kara, Yalka, and Orislav himself would get attacks of opportunity, but they would pass through this nimbus of evil.) Orislav, you can see two piercing red eyes in the shadow, and its features otherwise suggest a halfling, bearded, wearing nothing other than loose breeches, its features lurid in anticipation as its hand reaches inside your chest, (1d20 + 3 = 9) , but the light you're holding disorients it. It lands on the top of the stove in J15, clutching the flue pipe that leads to out the ceiling. It appears outraged for an instant, and then its grin returns.

Just out of curiosity, since I am on the rooftop firing down instead of standing on the ground firing at a minimal (prone) silhouette, would the -4 penalty still apply in this case, countered only by my +1 higher ground bonus? I realize that's how the rule is written, just interested in your opinion.

From the rooftop, the dwarf brings his heavy weapon to bear, setting the stock firmly at his shoulder, following the tangle of arms, teeth and paws below with careful patience. "Get up ye shamblin' piece o' twice dead ugly," Grumblenaught mutters. "Get up an' I'll do fer ye jes' like I done yer friend..."

Grumble will ready an action to Fire when the critter stands, holding my shot only if one of the party members enters melee. Chris, pls note that Grumble doesn't have Precise Shot, so he'll be penalized for firing into a melee: can't remember specifics, but that roll was even worse than I originally thought.

(nods) If you were more or less on top of him, I'd certainly agree. in this case, you're about 20' off the ground, and he's about 60' away horizontally. You're still mostly looking at him sideways. (And, with the low stone wall there, he's also got cover.)

When he pops up, you'll shoot.

Martaug, your wolf-spirit seems to be doing better with the negative level.

Ulrich tries to rise, which triggers Grumblenaught's readied action (his shot goes wild) and an Attack of Opportunity fom the wolf, which hits, takes him prone again, and does more damage. So far, that's 22 points of damage he's taken. He looks like he's loose in the seams, but he's still moving.

Back with his arse on the ground, the undead will grab for the wolf's throat, unsuccessfully.

The figure on the berm makes a run for it, crossing down to C13, and then making a running leap for the rooftop. (He needs to make an Acrobatics roll DC 12 (for 10' gap, plus 2 for the slant of the roof) and he ... makes it.)

Folks inside, you hear a light thud on the roof, an instant after Orislav's invocation of positive energy.

Yalka, you can see him make the leap. It's amazing how someone can risk life and limb like that. Well, limb, anyways.

He finishes his move in G16, on the roof. Grumblenaught, he's another of these dead men, wearing a dark green poncho, like the man you slew moments ago. And he carries a black wooden spear, which is itself radiating murky darkness that is messing even with your night vision.

Doing her best to maintain her concentration on the auras, the paladin keeps her comments brief. "Gunlar, calm down. They are bandits, and will be dealt with by the others. You are certainly not to blame for their attack. And both of you, don't let your ears be fooled. These scoundrels are certainly capable of mimicry to try to lure you from safety. Rest assured that is not Ulrich."

If I maintain the detect evil cone towards the farmhouse for the third round and beyond, will that allow me to functionally track whether the creatures move and where? Val wants to get a sense of where the auras are - location - and whether the location changes, for example, coming closer to the thicket.

That's my understanding, yes. Your sense isn't well-enough defined to target them with arrows, but you would know what 5'-by-5' area they're in. It gives you as much placement information as listening to people walk on creaking floorboards.

Female Kellid Human Whirling Frenzy Wolf-Totem Barbarian 2 (Favored)

Seeing the ominous figure leap up to the roof, going for Grumblenaught, Yalka leaps into a action (entering Rage).
To get a running start, I run up to the berm, and back to the roof, leaping up to haul myself into F-14, stepping up to G-14 if possible.
Jump Check: 14. I may suffer a -2 Penalty from Armor... There's also a +2 STR bonus from Rage,
though if it doesn't apply to Jump anymore per Beta, there's not much point in entering Rage this round...?

I figure I needed at least 40' of ground movement (single move) and then the jump (and step to G-14), so I doubt I can attack.
Feel free to roll an AoO for me if that occurs (I'm in Rage now - I guess).
BTW, what was your take: did the first round of Rage cost 2 Rage Points, or 1? Technically I wasn't in Rage at THE START of this Round, so I don't need to pay that... I've commented on the boards how the wording should be cleaned up, either way.

Gavgoyle seems to be having trouble checking in, so I'll take the liberty to say that Martaug dealys until after "Ulrich" has tried to rise and the cloaked figure has lept to the roof, and then spontaneously casts summon nature's ally I into H16. There, with no fanfare or warning, a man-sized monstrous ant appears and attacks the cloaked figure.1d20+1=21; crit? 1d20+1 = 20; 2d6=6 pts. of damage

Yalka, you;ll need to be enraged (and yes, only one rage point) and you'll end up finishing your move just as you land on the roof, but you make it as well! While you're up here, on the west side of the roof, where the roof is slate and steeper, you're denied your dexterity bonus to armor class.

Kara moves threateningly towards the shadow, and strikes, shouting "Take this then, dark being!"

Excellent.

Deserach, your acid bolt goes straight through the shadowy figure, seemingly causing no harm.

Kara, if you want to attack with the illuminated sword, you'll have to delay your attack for Orislav to cast that spell, and your opponent moves before Orislav.

The shadowly figure flees, straight up through the roof. Yalka, Grumblenaught, you see a smokey wisp --in the shape of a human youth or tall halfling-- come rushing up through the roof and head west, over the berm and out of sight. Neither of you got a good look at its face, but you got the definite impression that it was panicked.

Oooh, bravo! *golf clap*

Grumblenaught, you aim and fire, just as a whorl of the blackness surrounding the figure temporarily hides him from view, your bolt flying into the blackness...

Spoiler:

...and when the obscuring shadows part, you see that your bolt hit home, embedded in his chest and piercing what should be a lung. (You weren't stymied by the darkness, but you missed confirming the critical by one point!)

Ulrich calls out, "Help me, Jonash! Get it off me!"

The man on the roof turns his head slightly, contemptuously. "By our Dark Lord! We need that boy! Since we killed the father, and lost the damnable elman, the boy's the only one who can enter the water! Get yourself together!"

Martaug, your wolf bites again at the prone form of Ulrich, grabs it by the neck, and worries it, until the figure rises no more. The wolf looks at you and, it seems, smiles proudly.

The man on the room, presumably named 'Jonash', is in what's called a target-rich environment. Given a choice between a dwarf, a giant ant, and a barbarian teetering on the edge of the roof, he chooses to bull rush Yalka. He charges her with his spear held horizontally, sweeping blackness like waves in the air behind him.

Yalka, you can make an attack of opportunity against him. He's AC 13, including the -2 penalty for charging, but he has 20% concealment because of the night and the darkness powers of the spear.

He succeeds amazingly well. (He gets two chances to avoid the concealment because he has Blind-Fighting.) Yalka, you're pushed back 5' and fall to the ground, prone, in F13. He lands on top of you, and then steps to E13.
You take 9 points of damage. The fall hurt him as well, but not as much.

He takes the spear in his left hand and holds the right hand out over you. Even in this light, you can feel the cold, soulless energies ripple around that hand. "So you decided to follow me up to the rooftop. Then come, follow me to Hell."

Grumblenaught, after shooting the creature, you see him fling over to Yalka and the two of them fall off the roof. You hear a snap from down below, and hope it was a tree branch she landed on, and not an arm.

The gint ant turns to look at you, and you swear it gives a little shrug before unravelling into thin air. And you're alone again.

It is possible, but unlikely, that Yalka might have done enough damage in her attack of opportunity for the fall to have killed him. Let's assume not, for the moment.

Seeing as how all the action is outside, I will move downstairs and out into the front yard (H13). At least this foe is corporeal I think to myself as I ready my scimitar to intercept the fiend if he approaches.

Readied action to attack the spear-wielding undead if it enters a square I threaten.

Kara has indeed moved outside, and seeing the green-cloaked man standing over Yalka, she will move in to attack him.

Sigh. That's what I get for not saving a draft.

Kara, you were hold your action this round, so a move and attack is certainly plausible.

You and Orislav hear the skittering of feet on the roof and the heavy *thump* of people crashing down to the ground outside. The two of you rush out to see Yalka, injured and prone on the ground, and a chalk-white man standing over her. He wears a deep green poncho-like cloak, and holds a black spear in his left hand. All around him, patches of blank ink swim in the air, making him almost invisible against the deep night sky. It even swallows up the light shining off your sword.

Orislav calls down the power of his god again, and you feel great. The pale man cringes in pain as you finish your movement to stand nest to him, just north of Yalka.

Your rhythm is off and , your swing goes wide, , but he knows you're there.

"This is ridiculous," he hisses. "Any of you will do! I call you now! Surrender. Join us here, now, and you will share in a great, hidden treasure. Gold! More gold than you would know what to do with! All for you if you stand by us now!"

As you roll away, you leave yourself vulnerable for an instant, and Jonash lunges down at you. His right hand reaches between your right arm and your body, but you roll clear of him.

19 to hit (8 damage)

In the middle of a rapid-fire kata of blows, you sweep the knife that you normally consider the 'distaff' side, the point normally held as a secondary threat, at his shoulder, and he dodges the wrong way. To your amazement, you've struck him right through the neck. To your horror, he pulls free, holds his hand to the entry wound, and glowers at you. He tries to speak, but no sound comes out of his mouth.

And yes, the change is fine. I had to rewrite my response to match your edit, but that worked out okay.

whoah... parallel edit vertigo... but yeah, it worked out fine...

They do, too. Someone using a sense like Targetting Scent, or Tremblesense, or Blindsight --or someone operating under the 1st-Level spell true strike-- would have no chance to miss due to concealment. These villains have Blind Fighting, which gives them two chances to avoid the concealment.

The 20% concealment from normal humans fighting at night, and the 20% concealment from the darkness generated by the villains, doesn't stack.

Male Half-Orc Druid 2nd

As Martaug's feet hit the ground and he works to get the sickle drawn from the thong on his belt, he gives the wolf a nodding smile. "Damn good job, boy! Go knock him down, too!" He bobs his head toward the pancho clad man.

This is within Round 4, free action.

Out in the back, Valdisara, you pick up one moderate source, in the direction of the farmhouse, just at the extreme range of your spell. There's another, just as strong, which has taken of to the east at a decent clip. And there's a third source, lying 30' to the north of the house, slightly fainter than the first two.

"Whatcha doing?" asks Gunlar.

In the Hedges
Valdisara (Q4): Detect Evil round 3.
Hilden (P2): Delay
Gunlar (P3): Delay

Making a mental note of the sources and locales of the evil beings she's detected, Val spares a moment to glance at Gunlar. "Iomedae is showing me where those who threaten your family are, so that I am better able to serve both her and you. Do not worry, their numbers are dwindling."

The one(s) remaining at the house, are they moving at all? If not, on initiative, Val will change directions of her spell to check the corral - assuming that hasn't been has already been scanned. If is has, she is going to check the berm.

Valdisara, you scan the berm and the areas to the west and northwest, turning clockwise. So far, nothing else is showing up.

If Grumblenaught doesn't kill Jonash:

Martaug's wolf

Spoiler:
turns and charges. Martaug wasn't able to specify a particular target to attack (the battle is taking place well out of Martaug's sight, and his skills at wolfspeech are limited), but Jonash is conveniently enough, the only target in sight as the wolf rounds the western corner of the house. The wolf springs upon Jonash, unfortunately misjudging the position of the man due to the darkness swirling around him. The wolf is in E14.

Male Dwarf Ranger 2

Upon hearing the grisly sound of Yalka's impact, Grumblenaught winces, then moves to look down upon the scene, once again socketing a bolt and winching the bowstring to full, quivering tension.

"Ain't innerested in yer coin, mister," he rumbles. "Looks like it'll be a trip back t'the long, dark beyond for ye, I reckon."

Move and Move-Equivalent reload for me this round. Someone else will have to kill the bastard for me! ;P

Female Human (Taldan) Fighter 2

Kara attempts again to strike down the poncho wearing man, cursing her luck with her sword these days, and hoping fervently that this time will be better.

Jonash looks around him at the forces arrayed against him and he dips momentarily into desperation before an inhuman hatred bubbles to the surface. His mouth opens in a wide, silent howl, his right hand seems to burn the air itself with it's necrotic thirst, and he lunges through the darkness for Kara.

Spoiler:
When the shadows clear, it's obvious that [url="http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1756419/"] Jonash missed.

Martaug (L18): presumably moving up to the house?

Dropping my dagger in surprise that he still "lives", I get my bearings as the "thing" lurches away lunging at Kara...
Bobbing down to grab my spear without taking my eyes off IT, I give the spear a silent half-turn before unleashing with all my fury:
11, 5, & 13 to-hit... Err... He should probably Save vs. Cold from all that wind...

Male Half-Orc Druid 2nd

Martaug runs up to the house to try help pen in the poncho clad man.

Note: O. never had a chance to cast 'light' on Kara's sword.

Martaug, you'll be able to move and attack next round.

Orislav, you'll need to move up to Jonash to touch him. Am I correct in presuming that it's your endure elements prepared spell that you're dropping for cure light wounds?

You hit, and Jonash visibly recoils from the power of the spell. You folks have delivered 34 hit points of damage to him so far. He looks ragged, but he is still a very dangerous threat.

Deserach (H13): 5' step to H13, ready action to attack.

Round 6 initiative 21:

Deserach begins at a whispers tone, words of arcane mystery and power with the meter of a poem, the words slowly increases in volume until there is a palatable sense of crackling energy to his words and presence.

cast summon monster 1 (a giant fire beetle) this is cast as a second level caster due to my affinity to conjuration spells, Varissian Tattoo) I will summon the beetle to d14 (I think its open) and have it attack Jonash. Full Round action

A portal of sorts opens beside the undead abomination, from which the dry aroma of sun-baked sand and heat issues forth. As quickly as it appears it disappears leaving in it's wake an enormous scarab (well technically its small) it's shell black as night with two antennae that end in soft red glowing bulbs. It's mandibles clack noisily as it anticipates sinking them into the abomination. It immediately attacks.

Deserach's beetle appears next to Martaug's wolf and, as it is a celestial giant beetle, adds Smite Evil to its attack. It misses. (But it does provide flanking for anyone moving into D12.)

Male Dwarf Ranger 2

Grumblenaught tries to deliver a finishing blow while the field is relatively clear, but his bolt sails awry. "Bah!" He spits in disgust, reloading yet again.
