Wizard spells per day

General Discussion (Prerelease)

I don't have a full set of books at my disposal to do the research, but when did the wizard's spells per day take the nose dive? They used to cast what? nine per day, and now it's four? For the levels he can cast, a bard is a more robust caster at 5 per day. Why are the wizard castings so low?

The Exchange

They have the best spell-list and can know every spell on it. Also once you add in Bonus spells from intelligence and specializing, and Scribe scroll for free at first level(which every wizard should have a ton of scrolls at his disposal at all times), and the fact that into mid-level range there is no class that can compete with a wizard during a fight, then that is probably why their initial per day slots seems low. It may be a way of trying to curb their power (which fails miserably).

Are you referring to a change in the PFRPG?

In 3.5, wizards have always had a maximum of 4 spells per day per level (not including bonus spells).
