This is the discussion thread for the 'I swallowed a bug' play-by-post. It's also a gambling den. No paper currency please.

You just landed Sykala in Druid heaven. A giant tree town indeed!

Sykala wrote:

Yeah, but it the inhabitants don't have the druidic mindset. You'll just have to teach them some respect for the great and buzzing green.

Male Elf Rogue 5

Sorry for the delay in getting Fel's gear done, in the middle of moving my office. Will have done today. Skills are in - if anyone can look at them and tell me I haven't gotten it all horribly wrong, this is my first Pathfinder character...

Dark Archive

Skills 22 ranks / +4 ranks xtras background class skill houserule
_+5_Craft [Traps](Int) / 1 rank +3 bonus +1 Int mod
_+4_Intimidate (Cha) / 2 ranks +3 bonus -1 Cha mod
_+6_Handle Animal (Cha) / 4 ranks +3 bonus -1 Cha mod
_+6_Heal (Wis) / 1 rank +3 bonus + 2 Wis mod
_+6_Knowledge (geography) (Int) / 2 ranks +3 bonus +1 Int mod
_+8_Knowledge (History) (Int) / 4 ranks +3 bonus +1 Int mod [background class skill]
_+8_Knowledge (nature) (Int) / 4 ranks +3 bonus +1 Int mod
_+7_Perception (Wis) / 2 ranks +3 bonus + 2 Wis mod
_+6_Profession [Hunter](Wis) / 1 rank +3 bonus + 2 Wis mod
_+7_Stealth (Dex) / 1 rank +3 bonus + 3 Dex mod
_+7_Survival (Wis) / 2 ranks +3 bonus + 2 Wis mod
_+7_Swim (Str) / 2 ranks +3 bonus + 2 Str mod

Should be 26 ranks +4 for background class skill house rule (18 for ranger levels + 4 for barbarian + 4 for Intelligence). Still have 4 to spend. You left out some bonuses for some skills too.

Looks like you shorted yourself one attribute point as well. Total of 19 points used so far.

Strength 14 (2 points)+2 for half orc
Dexterity 16 (7 points)+1 at 4th level
Constitution 14 (5 points)
Intelligence 12 (5 points) -2 for half orc
Wisdom 14 (2 points) +2 for half orc
Charisma 8 (-2 points)

Someone please double check this as I was in a bit of a hurry.

Dark Arioch wrote:

I agree with Dark Arioch. I think four more ranks are available to you.

Also, remember everyone to give yourself 1 extra hit point per level in your favoured class.

Male Elf Rogue 5

Here's Keliwyn, elven rogue. I still need to level him up, which I'll do in the next few hours.

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Geek Level 10

In the rules it says for a human you pick your favored class at first level, but does it have to be the first class you actually take?

Thank you, Dark Arioch! There's always a better way than I thought..

I believe it can be any class you want it to be. You just only get the bonus when you take a level in the chosen class. First level or at any other point. Just can't change it after first level. That's how I read it anyway.

"Favored Class: Humans can choose any one class as their favored class at 1st level. Once made, this choice cannot be changed."

-- It doesn't say but I think the implication is there. Is there any reason your character couldn't have taken a level in sorceror then a level in rogue before two more levels in sorceror? That kind of fits his backstory anyhow.

Heh, my knee jerk reaction is, "SACRALEDGE!!! Everyone knows rogues get more skill points at first level!" Oh wait, they don't anymore. Old habits die hard......lol

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Geek Level 10

Yeah, the problem with that though is the max 8 hits for the 1st character level of rogue, and the archery feats. As far as background, I figured he got the level of rogue in his teenage years studying with his father, who maybe had a level of rogue as well as a couple of ranger. Then he got the levels of sorcerer when he went to dragon magic school in Absalom.

Either way I think it works about the same as far as hit points go:

Favored class Rogue: 8 + 4 + 4 + random 1d6 + 1 favored class + 4 Con bonus = 21 + random 1d6

Favored class Sorcerer 6 + 4 + 4 + random 1d8 + 3 favored class + 4 Con bonus = 21 + random 1d8

Male Elf Rogue 5

Keliwyn's ready to rock. Only thing left to do is equip him, and maybe tweak his skills some.

As the rules are imprecise, let's err on the side of the player and do it the way that most benefits you.

Liberty's Edge

Then I'll take sorcerer as my favored class.

Thanks Tarren and Dark Arioch for your help.

Ok, I am now making my rolls in Invisible Castle. How do I make it so you can see them or what info do you need? Haven't used it in a PBP before.

Hi all ... for magic items, I want to give you some choice but I'm not a big fan of Magic-Items-R-Us Emporiums so choice is also somewhat restricted. To reflect the way your character may have picked up loot here and there and chosen from a limited selection, I'm offering some choices.

Here's the deal:

Choose 1 item from List A and 1 item from List B
OR
Choose 1 item from List C and 2 items from List D

LIST A

  • +1 to armor
  • +1 to shield

LIST B

  • +1 to weapon
  • Horn of Fog
  • A set of Quaal's Feather Tokens (anchor, bird, fan, swan boat, tree, whip)
  • Amulet of Natural Armour +1
  • Ring of Protection +1

LIST C

  • Cloak of Elvenkind
  • Boots of Elvenkind
  • Ring of Climbing
  • Ring of Swimming

LIST D

  • Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds
  • Potion of Delay Poison
  • Potion of Bear's Endurance
  • Potion of Cat's Grace
  • Potion of Fox's Cunning
  • Potion of Owl's Wisdom
  • Potion of Spider Climb

The best way is to cut and paste the code called "BBCode". I did just now and it looks like this: example (1d20+2=21)

Click on it and you will see what I see.

As long as we are on the subject of invisible castle ... I sometimes check the rolls from invisible castle. I've noticed a few times in other games where players have rolled multiple rolls before achieving that timely critical but I put it down to computer glitches. Just be aware that the big bad guy might have a glitch working similarly in his favour later on. ;-)

Dark Archive

Ok, my first invisible castle roll was put in my post. Well I rolled a few times earlier just to recall how it worked (still unsure about multiple rolls at the same time), so no big bad guy crits! Let me know if it works right please. Oh, and do I have to link the rolls to the character or is that automatic with thier name entry?

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Geek Level 10

I rolled for may random hit die roll. I got lucky :)

Hehehe... no worries yet about multiple rolls. We're just starting out. Type in the character name and it will be linked to all other rolls by that character, I think.

I'll take a ring of swimming and two potions of cure moderate wounds. Do I pay for them or are they loot from the pirate ship?

These are magic items gained during your travels. They can be explained by a background or just be stuck in with your gear. Enjoy.

BTW, you can still edit your post in the game thread so your character appears not your other avatar.

Male Human Barbarian 4

Okay, Baas is updated with the magic items above. I took A (+1 to armor) and B (+1 to weapon).

Keliwyn will be happy to have a Cloak of Elvenkind (works w/ his background), and Potions of Cure Mod Wounds & Delay Poison. As far as I'm concerned, the cloak is part of his equipment from the Mierani that allows him to pursue their interests, as well as the mithral shirt he wears.

male human

Fippin is going to add a ring of swimming and 2 potions of delay poison to his gear.

PLAYTEST NOTE: As far as the playtest dimension of this game goes, the 'bit of luck' wording was not clear enough for us.

PLAYTEST NOTE: Generating characters at a level higher than 1st level had us wondering if a character had to select their first level class as favoured class.

Not very helpful, I just hope Jason sees it so he can make his intent clearer. Maybe he already has in the Beta.

I haven't posted the other one yet.

Tarren. are you going to track xp behind the scenes or will there be a running tally we will be keeping track of too? Not even completely sure how the new system works yet.

Dark Archive

Have another question. Do spellcasters have to cast defensively anymore? Was looking through the new rules and can't seem to find it. Spellcraft is the new concentration but nothing under there about it. If not, does spellcasting still incur an attack of opportunity?

If Fel the half-orc isn't going to show up, shall I invite Nameless to design a character. He was on the waiting list.

Six players is a lot for a play-by-post but players often drop out as the games take a while.

So, what do you say? Room for one more?

I will give you an occassional tally. The CR 6 encounter was worth 600 xp. P. 122 has some info on the new system.

Dark Arioch wrote:

I think that unless the rules say AofO has been removed there, then it is still in.

male human

If Fel's gone, I think we should just stick with the group we have. The game runs smoother when the numbers are 4-5, and we seem to have a pretty good dynamic so far. However, you're the dm, so do what you want.

Ok, cool. I will now ignore those pesky lil xps until you say we need to.

I read through some of the threads around Alpha and they seem to indicate that casting defensively was just accidently left out. So it works like it used to. Yeah, the stuff you bolded pertains to taking actual damage or having a non-damaging spell cast on you but not just plain old casting defensively.

I'm good with the group we have unless you feel we are gonna get our butts handed to us and need more support. If you do decide to add another might I suggest that they be a frequent poster. This game seems to be really trucking along and I, for one, really like it. 224 posts and we only started a week ago!

Yeah, I guess it would just be a spellcraft check with the DC = to 15 + spell level.

Yes, I like the speed of this thread. The characters are developing into an interesting bunch as well.

My Apologies for dropping from 'site' - had a couple of work-related distractions running up to the holiday and popped back to find things running along at a nice pace. Didn't think I could catch up w/o mucking with the flow. Enjoy the game, y'all doing some good gaming...

Regarding adding a sixth, I'll leave that up to you, Mr. DM. Your running the game, so it depends on what you're comfortable with, and whether you think the five PCs can hack it as is.

No sweat Durendal. Keep 'Fel' around. I'm sure there is a game for him somewhere.
