Items with Opposite Alignments & Penalties

New Rules Suggestions

Sorry if someone's posted on this subject before, but I really think the 3.x system of items with hostile alignments, ie. negative levels was very poor. Eg. an unholy weapon providing one negative level if used by an good creature (or similarly with a holy weapon used by an evil creature). This seemed a bad idea; ie. a good creature using a +5 unholy weapon doesn't really lose much for the one negative level. In the case of weapons, the + should turn into a - at the least.

And there should be other penalties as well, that are graded and in a table. Ie. stronger effects for the cost of the item. Perhaps 1-9,999 gp, 10k-50k, 50k-200k, and so on, or some other scale. Ie. there should be severe penalties for someone to carry or use an item that's of a different alignment.

Not that this would discourage some players, but I think some type of daily Fortitude save to avoid changing alignments would be reasonable. Start low, say DC 10 + 1 per day the item is in your possession.
