Wizards has put up some information about the upcoming Against the Giants mini sets, and pictures of an Earth Titan and a dwarf with a... sword? Gee, not an axe?
Actually, the dwarf kind of looks like they grafted on an arm with a sword from a human figure. They must have decided to do a change-up at the last minute. ;)

The Earth Titan looks great, and the Dwarf Warsword looks fine. Certainly a step up from the stuff I saw in Dungeons of Dread.
Definite step up. DoD was just plain awful. Maybe half a dozen minis worth something, out of SIXTY.
Now we at least know of one that's a must, and one that won't suck if we get stuck with like 30 of them in a case.

There were quite a few in DoD2 that I really liked, but about half of them ran the spectrum of passable to really bad. The Grick is WAY worse than the old grick, Troglodyte Bonecrusher is painful to look at, Gnoll Marauder has apparently discovered metallic wood, and the Orc Whatever robbed a halfling for his axe.
Still, some were really nice: Ascendant Hellsword, Emerald Orb Wizard, Howling Hag, and Vrock come to mind.I know its only two minis so far, but I like both of them.

The quality of the DDM line has suffered a lot recently. You'd think that with that being the direction they seem to be wanting to take things (ie, creating a D&D tabletop game which is really just a glorified minis game) that they'd raise, not lower, the production value. Yet another reason to write off WotC altogether. Good news for Paizo: I'll be buying more of your minis if they ever come in!

D&D is just as much a roleplaying game as any other you could mention. That being said, I thought that all prior expansions for DDM were great (I cant think of a bad DoD mini), it was basically DoD2 that made me cry.

I'm not converting to 4th edition so i dont need elemental titans...However this guy is just perfect as a huge Earth Elemental. And since its uncommon I can try to get my hands of 4 or 5. I think he looks great..the moss is a nice touch.
The dwarf looks so-so but a dwarf carrying a sword and not an axe or hammer makes him special and I will want 1 or 2 of him as well.
The 1st preview was good for me.

Wow, oh wow. From today's update, I really, really like the Dragonborn Myrmidion, which is a little surprising to me, because I haven't previously been that excited about either the Dragonborn or Warlords. Love it. There's also a Halfling Warlock in this update. Seems ok, if not that exciting.
Antioch
Mainly, I'm happy to see that so far the quality I'm used to seems to have returned. A halfling warlock with a fey pact sounds great, and I'm geeking out over the fact that there is at least one dragonborn in this set (just in time to miss the 4E release, but what can you do), though blurry previews seem to indicate that there is at least one more.

I used to always buy a case, but with the advent of the minis dedicated to 4E I've changed my strategy. I'll go to a website like Miniature Market and just purchase singles of the ones I want.
So far, the only one I've really considered buying is the Earth Titan. Like Jason said above, he'll make a great Earth Elemental. The Dragonborn looks nice, but since I won't be playing 4E, I don't see the need for one. I'm meh on the halfling and dwarf, as there have already been plenty of those.

The dragonborn would be an OK half-dragon, but unfortunately is a rare, which means that it will be hard to trade/overpriced (how much depends on usefulness for the DDM market, in my experience).
The Halfling is meh.

For the Dragonlance players, how close are Dragonborn to the Draconians? Are any Draconian minis released (I could ask my gaming buddy, who owns all of the minis released so far, but I won't be seeing him until our game tonight!)
Cheers! :)
A couple of Draconian minis have been released in a very old set (Dragoneye), with the Baaz and Kapak variants.
More recently (Angelfire) there's a Mina, Dark Cleric mini, but other than these, there are no other pieces related to Dragonlance, IIRC.

Lord Soth (Dragoneye as well IIRC) And Raistlin (Night below?) I have the red robed and black robed, thanks be to E-bay.
Edit, forgot the common Free League Ranger makes a good Tanis, or Chuck Norris.

Draconians from Dragonlance have wings. That pretty much the big difference.
This preview wasnt so hot for me.
The Halfling makes a decent cleric or sorcerer I guess.
Being a 3rd edition player the Dragonborn is only good as a half dragon.
Not impressed..but not bad enough yet to cancell the cases I plan on pre-ordering.

Many of the rares in Dungeons of Dread went for about $6 on Ebay. I was able to pick up the Champion of Baphomet for about that much: not all rares are ludicrous in price.
Also, dragonborn are an official race in Races of Dragon, and there is already a dragonborn fighter from the Angelfire expansion (I have two of them).
Jason Grubiak
They made a Raistilin mini? Awesome! What's it called ('cause I'd like to see what it looks like; same goes for Lord Soth!)
Go to this link:
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mix/galleryCheck out the Night Below Gallery to find "Raistlin Majere" and the Giants of Legend Gallery to find the "Lord Soth" miniatures.
Go to the Blood War gallery to see the "Free League Ranger" and see Tanis.
David Marks
Wow Jason! You're made of equal parts awesome and win! Thanks a bunch!
And to be honest, looking through these galleries is perhaps the best advertisement of DnD Minis I've ever seen. The innate collector in me is urging me to get collectin already while my wallet and stomach are both trying to remind me that I like eating. Stupid body requiring constant feeding and watering. If I had wanted a pet I'd have gotten one!
Cheers! :)

I must admit that at one point in time, I was a ravinous collector of D&D minis. I have complete sets of every expansion from Dragoneye to Night Below, pulled from the vast number of cases I would purchase.
I didn't buy a single pack of Dungeons of Dread, and I'm not impressed with Against the Giants so far. The packs with huges in them are by far my favorites, but this one hasn't shown anything cool yet.
Oh, if only there was another company out there that could produce pre-painted, plastic minis. They could release an expansion every, say, six months or so. Perhaps there could be an overarching theme drawn from a path of, like, six or so adventures. That would be really cool.
Does anyone know of a company that could do that?
David Marks
I believe the company that does Age of Confrontation (that would be Rackham) is converting their mini wargame into prepainted plastic, just like their futuristic wargame AT-43 (I think?)
The new prepainted plastic set just came out last December and so far they only have two armies out, but I'm pretty interested in where they're going with this.

Check out this link for leaked photos of unpainted minis from Against the Giants.

The first photo of the Fire Giant is the only non-huge. The rest are all huges.
There are 7 leaked photos in all so keep scrolling down.
I must say Im very dissapointed to see a huge that already exists getting resculpted when there are so many huge creatures not made into minis yet.
Im also seriously dissapointed in the fact that 2 of the monsters are Large creatures advanced to Huge size. This once again cuts into things I'd much rater see like Bebilith, Nalfeshnee, Remohaz or Aboleth. :(

The Thunderblast Cyclone might be whatever constitutes as an elemental in 4E. I like the idea of true elementals not being humanoid critters made of an element, though I dont want to get a crapton of those.
Now, the Elder Red Dragon looks totally awesome. Cool, even. The pose is excellent. Here's hoping for at least one of those.
Glad to see another rank-and-file fire giant for those that didnt get them before. I have a few myself that have hammers, and I think that if Wizards doesnt make a maul-wielding version that I could and mix things up a bit. Or just re-equip them with mauls.
Shadow Hulk is probably 4E's version of a Truly Horrid Umber Hulk, meaning that even if you arent playing 4E, its still useful if you bother to include huge umber hulks. Anyway, good mini.
Now, the Enormous Carrion Crawler is kind of...goofy...ish. I could do an Underdark campaign where the party goes through crawler-infested ruins and caverns, ala Aliens, and have that sucker at the end. Its Huge, so it would be like the queen or something.
And the Huge White Dragon. Good-looking mini, horrible pose. I'm hoping that whenever I use it that I can pose it in a way where the wings dont slap the characters around.
All in all, the scuplting quality in this set appears to be much better than in Dungeons of Dread. I dont buy my minis from a local game store, however, and only pay about 9-10 bucks a pop. Well worth it. :-)

I sit in bed at night and dream about making our own prepainted plastic miniatures. I want to do it SOOOOO bad. Unfortunately, it is much, much harder to do than anyone realizes and thus will be a slow and laborious process. But I hope we can conquer this mountain in the next few years. But the quality has to be very good. I won't stand for releasing crappy miniatures of any sort.
So I hear your plea and it matches with mine. But don't expect anything anytime soon.

the earth titan looks like it would make a decent earth elemental figure :::shrug::: the dwarf could be worse (although I also think that the arm looks somewhat off)... that lizard man looking guy with the axe looks pretty cool, he would make a good lizard man leader type mini.
all in all what they have showed us from this set is better then the last one (although there were a few from the last set I liked as well... most of the last set I didn't care for however).

Lisa,
Thanks for the info. I am a patient person: know that, whether it be two years or ten years before you come out with pre-painted minis, I will be here--waiting, cash in hand.
And just in case you don't hear it enough--Paizo rocks!
