What level characters is it designed for?
My question, exactly. I see myself judging this for a local store. It doesn't matter which level, of course. Just curious. I imagine 1st-level, like Hollow's Last Hope.

I got a post up at EN World, and E-mailed Morrus to make the news scoop..
Sorry, I don't know the answer to the previous questions, I just wanted to let people know I got this done.
This is on the heels of discussion that EN World can't be expected to report if we don't tell them stuff, so instead of complaining, I'm using the system. :)

If it's set to be a sequel to Crown of the Kobold King, it should cover levels after that adventure, which starts characters at 2. My hope is that it can be run after Carnival of Tears, to keep the chain of Darkmoon Vale adventures going. It's like it's own unofficial AP that way.
BTW, the cover art for it is FTW. (Is that correct grammar?)

Great to see this officially announced. Will we also get a product page? And will it be available in free pdf format and in print for sale for thos who don't get it at Free RPG Day? What level characters is it designed for?
Yes and yes (and I've updated the blog to that effect), and 5th level.

Thanks for the quick answers, all.
I just noticed, after reading yoda8myhead's comment about the cover art of Revenge of the Kobold King, that the adventure's level is indicated in fine print on the cover. I had to zoom in with my browser to see it.
Can't wait to run this. Thanks, Paizo!

Just a couple of notes. I am pretty sure that we are planning to put this up as a free PDF download, like Hollow's Last Hope. We will have a few copies for sale on paizo.com for those folks who can't make it to a participating store. Those copies will go up for sale the week after Free RPG Day.

DM: "a zombie kobold snarls at you"
Player: *yawn*
DM: *shows cover of Revenge of the Kobold King*
Player: *squeals in fear* "...uh, my character runs away."
Player 2: "Hey, where did the cleric go?"

Will there be plenty of copies for sale on Paizo.com? When is Free RPG Day?
Free RPG day is sometime near the end of June. As for plenty of copies, we printed as many extra copies for sale on paizo.com as we did Hollow's Last Hope, last year's Free RPG Day module. We just ran out of those a few months ago. But your mileage may vary, so be sure to get your order in early!

Is it going to be sent to Module Subsribers?

I'd like to know this too (since I'd love to get a copy and my FLGS doesn't seem to be on the Free RPG Day list). If not, I can always order it separately of course.
As an aside, anyone have any pointers on how I might get my hands on a print copy of D0 (Hollow's Last Hope)? None of my usual online retailers seems to have any in stock, and even eBay has come up empty. You'd imagine that there would be some "extra" copies floating around, but seems scarce at the moment.

how can we get an early copy, if we're planning to run this for RPG day?
and is it as little kid friendly as Hollow's Last Hope? I ask because if I run this at Packrat Comics, I'll likely be running it for 8-13 year olds.
It's by Logue, so my guess is no. It's a higher level adventure with a scary cover, so those facts both support my initial theory. I'm sure you could tone it down, though, if you felt you needed to.
I imagine the FLGS will get the Free RPG Day packet from their distributor a few days (at least) in advance of the event. If you coordinate with them, and are running something for their store, I can't believe they'd keep you from preparing.

The store I am running Revenge of the Kobold King told me that he ordered two kits from Impressions Advertising and Marketing. He expects to get them a week before the event - so I am guessing the "distribution" of Free RPG Day items is beyond the control of publishers once it leaves their possession.
Anyway, the point is, talk to the retailer you are GMing for. He or she may have a good idea of when to expect their product. As noted, Purple Dragon games in Salt Lake City expects his a week before the the event. A week should be enough time to prepare Revenge of the Kobold King.

Edit: I just noticed yoda8myhead's reply to the same question - what he said. ;)

I probably won't be able to make it to my "local" (if you call an hour away & an hour back local, ha ha) shop, so glad to hear it'll be a free pdf & also I'll buy it just as I did Hollow's Last Hope. I don't mind paying when they are great products!!

I'm very excited about this!
My table has started with "Hollow's Last Hope" last week. We decided that all the player characters would be from Falcon's Hollow. So I purchased “The Crown of the Kobold King" to get all the details about the town. I knew my table was going to love playing D0, I made sure to introduce a couple of the children from the D1 to build an emotional bond early. The players like “their town” and after successfully returning with the cure, they are considered heroes by some and potential enemies to others. I was very excited about them starting D1 in two weeks. But now it is even better knowing I will surprise them at the end of June with the shocking "Revenge of the Kobold King!"
Thanks Paizo for the high quality, fun filled games!

I'll be having the pleasure of running this module at Free RPG weekend this comming Saturday at my FLGS - Evolution Games in Lansing Michigan.
I've just finished my initial read through of the module and I'd like to thank Nick and all the folks at Paizo for putting this module together. Nick has managed (in a sidebar no less!!) to make living and working in Darkmoon Vale even more oppressive and depressing than previously imagined. I've always thought it was a town of little hope and petty dreams - now I understand that there is no such thing as hope. :-)
I can only hope that I have at least some players at the game day who are familiar with the Vale's storyline, at least the D0 and D1 parts. That will make running this excellent module even more more of a pleasure.

Revenge of the Kobold king is awesome!
I have to report that Paizo outdid itself again with the Free RPG product. It was by far and away the highest production value of any of the other freebies, and the only one that I saw in color. Artwise, the Harn product came a close second, and then the Song of Ice and Fire preview was also well done. I haven't looked through the 4e item since another DM runs in my regular group and I'll give it to him (it did come with a dungeon tile thingy though)
Also, I ran the adventure as a demo for the store that participated for some players who had heard about Paizo and wanted to play a Pathfinder game. The branding is very, very catchy. They really enjoyed it, though we only got through the second encounter. I allowed the participants to pick through the 8 stated iconics (I bumped Selah, Ezra, Lem, and Harsk to 5th from their 4th level incarnation in River of Darkness). The players chose Valero, Kyra, Merisel, and Ezra.
I recommend three regulators, though if you want more of a challenge for the PCs, maybe 4 (Pay Day and the others for party+1 foes)

trellian |

Just wanted to bump this back up.
I'm running this in a months time or something in my ongoing Falcon's Hollow-campaign. Have anybody run this? Any things to be wary of? And how many regulators did you use? The PCs have really been a thorn in the side of Kreed since day one, and he's really looking forward to offing them.
Bizarre that it doesnt say how many regulators, or what happens..
** spoiler omitted **
thoughts anyone?
Mr Logue?

I ran this one a few months ago and my group was able to complete it in 3 sessions (each session 5-6 hours each). I had Kreed pretty much force 'Pay-Day' Teedum upon the party for this adventure (as an insurance policy) and once they were on their way to the cutyard, they were surprised to see that Teedum had brought 3 Regulars with him! Both Teedum and his regulars had the Beta rules tweak done upon them!
For part one of the module - Depnaakra was re-stated with the new rules, but the rest of critters and encounters I left as is! The Azlanti Chariot Beetle is lots of fun and can cause a world of hurt upon the party! I actually lost a party member to it if I recall correctly!
In part two of the module, as the party made their way into the Cold Marrow - I had re-stated Merlokrep to the beta rules (as I had done for the previous adventure CotKK) and also included two new minions to join him, which happened to be newly risen dread zombie versions (also tweaked to the beta rules) of the two party members who had fallen in the events of Crown of the Kobold King! This added for a more grand finally to the leacy of Merlokrep! The rest of the critters and encounters I left as is.
My group also took on Teedum and his regulars at the end of part one of the module, In the cutyard - after the battle with the Azlanti Beetle surprisingly! Let me know where your players tussle with Teedum! He still lives in my game, though has considerable loathing for the PC's!
I await your update!

Ran it a couple of days ago. A heavily modified version of it, that is. We're nearing the end of a longer campaign in Falcon's Hollow, and the heroes are close to bringing down Kreed.
In my version of the adventure, one of the PCs (a shapechanger) had gone undercover as one of Paydens regulators a month ago, and was one of 5 regulators Payden brought with him. Kreed had a second incentive of sending Payden: destroy evidence that can prove the Consortium sells lumber to Cheliax (prohibited by law and something that can bring the Consortium down). It was a chaotic fight in the cutyard, with the PC regulator finding out about this and telling the other PCs. A 3-way fight occurred, kobolds vs. PCs vs Payden and his regulators. Payden lit the log cabin on fire, but the Goliath Monk got revenge from a few months earlier (when Payden had knocked him senseless), and also managed to retrieve some evidence.
I had already decided to cut the Cold Marrow part of the adventure, but now I also cut stuff like the zombies in the feast hall, the spiders in the smithy, the Azlanti beetle and Deepnakra. We were nearing the end of the night, and I thought this was a more climatic end.

No second part huh!?! Well that will make things very interesting for your future adventures around Falcons Hollow! With Merlokrep still kicking (again), that makes Darkmoon Wood a much darker place indeed! Who know's, you could always tie him in to the next module in the series: Hungry are the Dead! Now that was a fun module! ;)

Well, my players never played Crown of the Kobold King (too much Dungeon Crawl for me), so they do not know who Merlokrep is. I just combined the plot from D1 (missing children) with the cutyard encounter and the "work with Payden"-hook from Revenge. I rarely use the adventures as is, but steals bits and pieces from them. I used Jeva from Crown of Kobold King as a stand alone adventure of a girl turning into a werewolf, and used the gravedigger from Hungry are the Dead as a hook before their final confrontation with Sharvaros Vade (which ended somewhat peacefully with the necromancer turning away from his evil ways).
I used D0 as it was, and will probably use most of Carnival of tears (although with Kabran already dead, I will have to cut that encounter).

![]() |

Sounds cool!
I have yet to run Carnival of Tears, though look forward to doing so. I plan to use it to wrap up several things that have transpired between my gamerz and the NPC's of the hollow! Plus... a freaky carnival adventure is always fun :P The tensions between the PC's and NPC's like Kreed, Teedum, and even the Red Roc Guild are reaching a boiling point! It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.
Let me know how Carnival of Tears works out for your group!
