Missing Halfling Thrown Weapon Bonus

New Rules Suggestions

Dark Archive

Hey all,

For whatever reason, Jason has left out the thrown weapon/sling attack bonus for halflings. And as written, halflings seem a bit weaker than the other Pathfinder races.

So I propose adding to halflings the following:

Cunning Aim: Halflings gain a +1 racial bonus on attack rolls, plus an additional +1 per 5 levels, to a maximum of +5 at 20th level, with all thrown weapons and slings: Throwing and slinging stones is a universal sport among halflings, and they develop especially good aim.

Sovereign Court

The extra bonus gave the halflings flavor in addition to the concretical mechanical bonus. I'd like to see this come back too.

Aye seems we ought to keep the bonus with thrown weapons/slings. But you have to admit a racial ability scaled in power across class levels is a bit unprecedented...

Grand Lodge

Yes, but you do have to remember that halflings also got a +4 bonus to Stealth checks, which now also covers Move Silently. So that was a +2 skill bump there. Also they gained a +2 bonus on Acrobatics checks which covers Balance, Jump, and Tumble, so there's an additional +4 skill bump there as well. So they traded the +1 to hit with ranged weapons for a +2 bonus on 3 additional skills: Balance, Tumble, and Move Silently.

I still liked the +1 to thrown weapons and would like to see it retained.

I would also like to see that +1 bonus retained. If you added the skill bonuses to a 3.5 halfling I could see removing the attack bonus, but the increase is due to skills being combined and not an actual extra skill bonus. While this does result in the halfling having better skills than before, its something that everyone that takes Move Silently/Hide/Jump/Balance/or Tumble will benefit from. In the case of Move Silently/Hide and Stealth, thats something that ALL small races will now receive. I don't believe that a +1 on attacks made with thrown weapons and slings is overpowered at all, considering the low damage of small weapons and the -2 strength adjustment.

Thats my opinion anyway, and if you believe I'm understating the benefits of the skill increases then by all means let me know.

Hey, this would make a great Racial Feat for halflings! (Hint, hint, Jason! ;). I would make it at "first tier" and if you take 'Improved Cunning Aim' you would get to re-roll one thrown weapon attack/day (keep the better result of the two). 'Greater Cunning Aim' would give you bonuses which would scale with levels.

This is what we've been discussing on the 'Racial Feats'-thread.

Actually, this bonus is even greater with the skill revisions. Jump previously had a -6 penalty for those with a 20 ft. move rate (halflings), so previously a halfling had an overall -4 penalty to Jump. With that penalty removed, that's an extra +6 bonus to a halfling's jump skill.

Thats true, however that also means that classes like the barbarian and possibly the monk (possibly because we haven't yet seen the Pathfinder monk) lose any bonuses they would get from having a speed greater than 30. To keep the comparison limited to races, dwarves and gnomes will also benefit from this change. If the reason for dropping the halfling's bonus on thrown/sling attacks is due to increased skill bonuses, then I'm still not convinced that they shouldn't still get it. But it's something I can easily house-rule in if it doesn't make it into the finished product, and if the majority feels that it's a fair trade then I really can't complain too much.

Scarab Sages

If you don't bring it back, it'll be grandfathered into my game. ;)

Liberty's Edge

But all halflings can use slings! That means I can play a halfling commoner and have two weapon proficiencies! Surely that makes up for the loss of a +1 to hit, right? And don't forget, my halfling commoner also gets proficiency with all halfling racial weapons. All ONE of them! My halfling commoner is going to halfling skiprock the hell out of some cats! It will be glorious!

Obviously I'm being snarky. I can live with the omission in the context of halflings getting additional skill bonuses. I just think the sling/racial weapon proficiency thing is kind of like somebody eating all the skin off my KFC and handing me back the meat. I mean really. Sling proficiency? Is there a class I'm not remembering that can't use a sling? If you're going to do that, at least make the sling a more realistically portrayed weapon. Increase its range and up the damage a bit. A good slinger can accurately hit a human target at 30 meters (about 100ft) and, at close range, a sling bullet can penetrate thin steel.

Maybe give halflings the Rapid Reload feat in regard to slings so they can at least move and fire.

Shadow Lodge

I liked the bonus, I am saddened to see it go. It may take some therapy but I'll get over it. Halflings were crazy good at hitting things with rocks. +1 for size, +2 dex, +1 thrown weapon, that's +3 to hit with any thrown weapon versus a comparable human. My halfling rogue/ ranger specialized in throwing stuff.

Sign... good bye +1 thrown, I will miss you.

I understand why it's gone but I miss it.

Wizards aren't proficient with slings iirc. They are the only PC class tho, so yeah.... a little lame. Kinda makes sense, but maybe swap it for weapon focus if you are proficient for your class?

Heheh, skiprocks kick butt....oh and its 2 weapons technically, the skiprocks take a separate proficiency from the halfling warsling.

just my 2 cents. :)

Having just re-read the rules on slings, I have to say I like the suggestion of rapid reload a bit better. Though this still does nothing for the thrown weapon end of things...but still an improvement.

EDIT: Oops my bad...skiprocks don't have halfling in the name, so it is just the one...but still just image all those halfling commoners taking 1d4 shots at you and critting for 4d4...don't piss off the halflings is all I have to say :P
