"Looks like some kind of person was walking around out here."

Male Half Elf Ranger 1st

Nils wanders downstairs to take a look outside the building at these tracks they're talking about upstairs.

Female Halfling Rogue/1

Feona goes with him, ready to get out of the stuffiness of the room and breathe some fresh air.
As they walk, she says, "Do you think the thief is a shape changer or something like that?"

"Well the sheriff all but hinted that magic was involved, that witness did say something about gnomes being seen down here, so I guess the real question is how many gnomes are there here and who would feel stealing that dagger worth the risk of getting caught?"Nils replies looking perturbed.

"Unless the sheriff left his window open someone would have either snuck in before the maid came along and then after casting the spell dropped the dagger from the window before climbing down, or that bird is their familiar and they cast the spells via it if thats even remotely possible, we really need a mage to confirm that possibility but if that is the case we're looking for a gnome who owns a bird, we're talking a falcon, sparrowhawk or some kind of small bird of prey able to carry a dagger. But to pull that off without waking the sheriff even whilst under some kind of spell, I honestly don't know, do you think you could have climbed up there and back down without a rope for the trip up?" Nils asks wishing he remembered more from his time helping his sister study magic.

Nils is just guessing he really doesn't know enough to know for sure about any of this, but he does know whoever did this would have to be desperate so the quicker they resolve this the more chance they can catch up with the guilty party if they are still here since they must be aware there would be a search

Male Gnome Wizard (Transmuter) Level 1

Burrloft's eyebrows raise to improbable heights as the discussion of magic and gnomes continues. He fitfully runs his hands through his inky violet ponytail, weaving them between locks. "Well, I for one feel decidedly discomforted by the direction this is taking. Sheriff, could we please get the innkeeper out here with us?"

Once the owner is outside, Burrloft heaves a heavy sigh, "Sorry to drag you into this further, but, with knowledge that I place my neck upon any potential chop... How many gnomes, including myself, are there around the inn and community?"

I won't be able to do an actual post until later tonight, due to my daughter being sick. Sorry everyone. Go ahead and just rp for a little bit and I will move the story along later tonight.

"Yeah, it doesn't look too difficult," Feona says matter-of-factly. "But I can't understand how the sheriff would sleep through all of it. You don't think he's in on it...do you?"

Feona looks at the tracks on the ground; having no tracking ability, just seeing if she can recognize anything or find any other clues.

"No neither do I, but if he was so would be the good doctor so I can't help wondering just how important that item that got burned yesterday really was," Nils nods back

Nils takes a moment to scan the ground for tracks to see if he can discern how many people might have been standing around underneath the sheriff's window and whether there's signs someone climbed up.

"Now if we're dealing with a mage from what little I remember from my sister's studying and unless we're delaing with a pretty powerful mage, how much pressure would you say you'd need to open that window Feona?" Nils asked her.
"Did the sheriff actually say he locked it?" Nils adds thoughtfully.

Nafti examines the windowsill...

1d20+1=21 Natural 20!!

Awesome! I never bothered with detect magic. Oh well...good old sleuthing now.

Nils:

Spoiler:
Looking at the tracks, Nils can see only one pair. They are small humanoid tracks, and they are heading in the direction of the stables.

Nafti:

Spoiler:
Looking on the windowsill, Nafti sees the same dark marks that are on the sheriff's pillow, and also pieces of hay. The hay looks like it came from the stables.

"Hay?" Nafti picks up one of the stray pieces and holds it up. To no one in particular, "Where are the stables?"

Onyx

Spoiler:
Hope your daughter is feeling better. :)

Male Half Elf Ranger 1st

"Hello!" Nils says a little surprised as he gazes down at the ground beneath the window and then begins to walk slowly towards the stables.

"Small footprints leading to..." he says to Feona as he looks up and stares at the stables.
"There, I think," he adds a mite confused as he points at the stables.

"No he didn't. But if it was locked, you'd have to pick it and then ease it open so as not to wake the sheriff. Of course, was there any evidence..." Feona suddenly smiles as their companion sticks her head out of the window. "Oh, hi Nafti! Find anything interesting?" she calls.

"Then lets head on over there," Feona says, and then waves at Nafti and points toward the stables. "You coming with us?" she whispers loudly.

Nafti heads downstairs and joins the group walking over to the stables.

Male Gnome Wizard (Transmuter) Level 1

Burrloft continutes to thread his fingers through his ponytail and quickly follows along with the group.

Nils is able to follow the tracks all the way to the stables. Upon reaching them, it's clearly visible to see that an interior half-wall covered with hay infused mud.

Female Halfling Rogue/1

Ignoring her rumbling belly, Feona peers into the shadowy stables and says, "Any bright ideas before I just go walking in?"
As she talks, she pulls her katar (punching dagger) and grips it firmly.

Male Gnome Wizard (Transmuter) Level 1

Burrloft smiles at Feona "I have several, Feona, most polished and scintillating like diamond." He moves to the door of the stable and raises his bangled arm before him. "Arcaaniss ocuir ab-roh!" He will proceed to concentrate and move into the stable to see if he can detect the dagger with Detect Magic.

Burrloft

Spoiler:
You detect some magic in one of the spots in the half-wall

As soon as Burrloft enters the stables, a loud screech echoes from the wall and a small blurry shape swoops down at him. A large owl comes tearing down, talons pointed down at the gnome's head.

The owl charges, but barely misses sinking it's talon's in Burrloft's head. The owl screeches once more, fluttering around angrily.

With his concentration on his spell, Burrloft remained fairly flat-footed when the owl swooped at him.

Burrloft initiative (1d20+1=10)

Nafti: 22
Owl: 21
Marissa: 12
Burrloft: 10
Feona: 6

One of the rules I play with, is that a tie goes to the defender. That is something that I like, so that is what I will be using. So you were barely missed Burrloft. :)

A near-perfect translucent, dark green ball bubbles into existence, bubbling and burning as if boiling from the inside. The orb bursts, showering the owl in a foul-smelling, yellow-green rain.

Ranged Touch Attack: 1d20+3=19

Damage roll for acid splash. Acid damage. (1d3=1)

Male Half Elf Ranger 1st

Sorry been offline since Wednesday pm after my computer went nuts, only just got it operational so still catching up on what I missed in the meantime!

Nils Initiative: 10+3 for total of 13

"Oh what a cute little owl!" Nils notes as he looks inside the stables.
Moments later...
"Hey you cut that out! I mean it either stop attacking them or I'll make your master regret it!" Nils berates the owl using techniques he learnt to try and handle the owl...

Does Handle animal work? If so Roll 1d20+5:17+5 for Total of 22 if the skill can't be used then wild empathy which reduces the roll by 2 to a total of 20 okay as its a magical beast thats a -4 so it becomes 18 if handle animal works or 16 if its wild empathy only

The owl is suddenly covered in the green liquid, the bird flapping it's wings madly as it tries to stop the burning. Smoke rises up from the bird, little tufts that quickly disappear. The bird continues its attack on the gnome. It strikes him with little trouble, though only grabbing his hair, pulling some of it out.

Attack: 1d20+5=19, Damage: 1d4-3=0

Ooooh worthless bird. And glad to have you back Nils. And you will have to see if you succeed on your turn. :)

Marissa is up next.

Female Halfling Rogue/1

Did I miss something? Who is Marissa?

The new cleric mentioned on the discussion page, but one we haven't met yet...

Maybe Onyx is running too many games :)

This is the only one I'm running. :) Marissa is the new cleric who I was able to recruit.

Female Human (Varisian) Cleric 1

You hear the sound of footsteps and a startled noise from one of the stalls farther down in the stables. A figure moves out from one of the stalls and looks at the group battling the large owl. You see a young human woman with olive colored skin, black hair, and covered in an orange and violet traveling cloak. She is holding a curry comb in one hand and has been traveling for a while judging by the road dust on her face and clothes. Shooo! she shouts and flings the curry comb at the bird.

OOC:Improvised Weapon (1d20-3=17, 1d2=1)
And here I thought this would be a funny but ineffectual opening move!
Improvised Weapon crit confirm (1d20-3=14, 1d2=1)

Ah, I'm so sorry! Nils should have gone before Marissa. But well, this worked to introduce her.

The owl is struck solidly by the comb, the bird barely able to keep in the air though is still angrily attacking Burrloft. Nils tries to go over and calm the furious animal, but it is too focused on its attack to calm down. It just shrieks at Nils, still keeping the talons of it's feet pointed out in an aggressive manner.

Burrloft is up.

One more thing, sorry about this everyone, but Burrloft should have taken one damage from the bird.

Male Gnome Wizard (Transmuter) Level 1

No problem, will note it.

Burrloft's face pinches in anger and he glares at the bird. "Little bugger! Let us see how you like a taste of telekinetic fisticuffs!" He makes a small punching motion with one hand and exerts the force out with his mind, forming a small ghostly fist that streaks toward the raptor.

Ranged touch attack: Telekinetic fist attack against owl (1d20+1=13)
If successful, Damage (1d4=4)

The bird maneuvers out of the way of the force punch, still able to continue it's onslaught of the group.

Feona is now up.

Female Halfling Rogue/1

"Get away, nasty bird!" Feona yells at the owl as she takes a few steps and jumps up at the bird, swiping at it with her punching dagger.

Acrobatics: 1d20+9=17
Attack & Damage: 1d20+3=13, 1d4+1=5

Male Half Elf Ranger 1st

Nils next action I'll post now if it comes up

Nils is looking around to see if he can spy something to trap the owl in like a cloak or something that can be flung over the owl to secure it.

Perception check Roll 1d20+7: 9+7 for Total of 16 actually wouldn't this be a survival check?

Onyx

Spoiler:
sent you an email to your gmail account.

The bird swiftly dodges out of the way of Feona.

Nafti is up next.

Nafti:

Spoiler:
Got the email and sent a reply.

Onyx

Spoiler:
Should have done at least 1 point of damage. :)

Nafti hurls another ball of acid at the owl, coating it's wings, pieces of green-tinged feathers falling to the stable floor as the bird tries flying out of range.

Ranged touch attack; acid damage. (1d20+3=21, 1d3=1)

The owl still stands as it's blasted once more with the acid. It attempts to slash at the gnome again, missing by just an inch.

Attack: 1d20+5=12, Damage: 1d4-3=1

Looking around the stable, Nils can see that it's bare at the moment.

Marissa is up next.

Female Human (Varisian) Cleric 1

The stranger darts forward, moving to the gnomes side. She buffets the air with her fists, trying to distract the bird and drive it away from the gnome. She continues to shout, whistle, and make noise with her hands at the animal.

OOC: Marissa Aid Another (1d20+2=21) Aiding Burrloft to give him a small boost to his AC.

Marissa is successful in her aid to assist the gnome should the owl attack again.

Burrloft is up.

Male Gnome Wizard (Transmuter) Level 1

Burrloft pivots hoping to get a better bead on the owl and swings another telekinetic fist at the creature, but as he turns he nearly trips over a pitchfork that was left on the floor and his magical punch goes awry.

The owl lets out another screech as it swiftly dodges the first.

Feona is up.

Female Halfling Rogue/1

"Has anyone tried talking to this stupid bird?" Feona grunts, jumping into the air again and slashing at it with her dagger.

Acrobatics: 1d20+9=18

Attack/Damage: 1d20+3=7, 1d4+1=4

The owl once more is able to stay out of the way of the blade, screeching at Feona in anger.

Nafti is up.

Female Halfling Rogue/1

So...are we done? This game appears dead to me.
