On favoring the Talent mechanic

Races & Classes

Liberty's Edge

After playtesting the new Fighter, my players general response was that Weapon Training and Armor Training seemed too redundant and boring through advancement, even considering the much needed end cap abilities of Armor Mastery and Weapon Mastery. On the other hand, the Rogue's Talent mechanic seemed well appreciated. This lead me to the thought that maybe the Talent mechanic could be used to fix ALL of the core classes. Remember, "add, not subtract!"

The Fighter (and any other class) could have Racial Talents for classes, much like Racial Substitution levels.

For example, a Cleric's Domain Power could be a Cleric Talent, with a prerequiste of level. If a player finds himself unimpressed with the Domain Power options at that level, choose another Talent instead.

One of the favored sourcebooks in my Forgotten Realms campaign was Champions of Valor, whic was full of Substitution level options based on belonging to an organization, region, or religon. Talents would fill that same option. HEck, even Obtain Familiar could be a Talent!
