I love the mysterious Harrow card hook, but how have people handled it when the intended recipient is a Barbarian? Most 1st level barbarians are illiterate, and can't read the card. Would Zellara subsitute glyphs, or would she simply trust the character to have someone else read them the card?

1) you can have someone bring the card to the barbarian and read it to them

2) it IS magic.. maybe when he touches the card it produces a ghost sound as the spell asking him to the meeting.

A barbarian can't read, but unless he's Stone Stupid, he'll recognize writing for what it is. I just assume that a barbarian PC asks someone nearby to read the card to him if it comes to it. There are plenty of readers in the city, after all!

Someone might also deliver the card to the Barbarian and read them the message. Or an entirely different message that still makes them want to go there, "Free Booze at X o'clock at X location," works on every Barbarian I've ever met.

IMC Lem, the halfling bard on p.91, is an NPC who delivers the harrow cards to each of the PCs. He has the "unhappy childhood" hook from the players' guide and was the first hero contacted by Zellara. He returns later on to guide the PCs through the Shingles.

I love the card method of character introduction.

Besides the creepiness of having your group mentor effectively be a haunted harrow deck, if a PC accidentally dies, it's pretty easy to have a new character show up with a "card in hand" and a bewildered look on his face.

Great hook!
