The Quarterstaff as a Trip Weapon

Alpha Release 1 General Discussion

Silver Crusade

One thing I've always wondered is this: why isn't the quarterstaff considered a trip weapon? I mean, it is more than just a simple bludgeoning tool. Anyone who either has some skill with its use as a weapon or has seen any kind of action/martial art film can attest to this fact. Whether you use the ends to sweep someone off their feet or use the center to daze and stagger the person back, the result is the same, right? The person hit goes down. So why does this not translate over into the weapon's game mechanic?

Sounds okay to me. And it's not such a big chance. Just add the line "you can make trip atempts with a quarterstaff".
100% compatibility. ^^

I allow the quarterstaff to trip in my games. The only reason why I couldn't figure out why it was never done this way was, It would be too good of a weapon or at least not a simple weapon.

I wonder if, instead of "trip weapons," you made the ability to trip a class feature or a feat? Just brainstorming, here, but it seems like more of a technique that you'd learn than a thing certain weapons just do. Then instead of 'trip weapons,' you just have some weapons with a +2 to trip, things with hooks (sickles), loops (lariat) or that you can lever with both hands (staves).
