In a much louder voice, "Lass, it's good ta be seein' ye - 'how 'bout ye be fer pickin' a target and show us that fire yer so fond of talkin' about!""Things to burn?" Yin chimes excitedly before hopping off the wagon, ready to join the fun and games with the owlbears.
Initiative (1d20+1=5) Ready although obviously torn as to which to pick for the first burning target.
"I kept telling her that halflings don't have low-light vision but she wouldn't believe me," says Larjen a look of shear panic still on his face from the ride but not the owlbears. He draws a short bow and clambers up on top of the wagon.

Assuming that he missed im not gonna roll the damage. Aye-Aye-Ai means he's really frustrated. It's his way of saying he's really frustrated.

Round 3
Sir Manfred shifts his technique to defensive attack, moving erratically around his target and boosting his AC up to a whole 16 (he really misses his plate now), and attacks again:
Defensive Longsword attack and damage if hit: (1d20+8-4=18, 1d8+4=5)
Another shallow graze.

I'll wait for the celestial badger's attack for round 2 before continuing.
Whoops. Thanks for the friendly reminder, Tarren.
Badger claw/claw/bite: 17/18/12, damage 1/1/1. Then it disappears (wand @ caster level 1).

Ovirid, having observed the owlbear while concentrating on dodging, decides it's anatomy's not so different from a standard bear, and attempts to put his light pick in a most painful spot - for the owlbear, that is.
Light Pick: Attack with flanking, damage, sneak attack (1d20+7=13, 1d4+1=3, 1d6=5)
"Ack, Ah need t' be fer doin' better 'n that. You lads press your attack, but if'n 'e runs, I'm fer gettin' the bows n' 'ittin' 'im from a distance."

ROUND 3 SUMMARY
Kornelius and Manfred swing swords at the (female) owlbear on their side of the camp. Manfred and the badger both draw some blood. Unfortunately, Kornelius does not. The female owlbear slashes wildly but misses both Manfred and Kornelius.
Ovirid, having flanked the male owlbear, distracts him enough for one of the guards to poke through the fur and feathers into a muscular stomach. The male owlbear scrapes the chain shirt of one of the keep guards but does no damage.
Jaenris' magic missile singes fur and feather again. The female owlbear squawks savagely.
Yin attempts to shoot the male owlbear, but trying to avoid killing 'Burp' and the other guard while doing so makes her shot impossible. I think soft cover counts against ranged touch attacks. (p. 146).
Larjen aims a little better and sends an arrow over Burp's head and into the male owlbear's feathery shoulder.

Defensive Flanking attack, damage: (1d20+8-4+2=20, 1d8+4=10)
A hit! A palpable hit!

Tarren (and anyone else):
Ovirid misses the big male but still misses. His strategy of flanking may need some time to pan out.
"I was fer hearin' ya the first time, yer honor. No need ta be fer rubbin' it in."
To Burp and the other guard: "C'mon, men! I think that they be fer finishin' theirs off first! Put yer backs into those swings!"
More quietly: "Torag, I'd be fer appreciatin' yer aid. I'm not fer bein' 'urt bad enough fer such a performance as this. May yer 'ammer guide my pick."
Janrith Baelriss
Hoping to slow down the predator again, Janrith raises his wand and summons another celestial badger before the owlbear. If possible, he positions the creature to flank.
Claw, claw, bite: 10, 10, 15 (+2 if flanking), 1 damage each.
Kornelius Rowel II
"You..owl....creature....thing...bear...female.....you."
Kornelius needs help to find a few words as he misses again.
attack-flanking damage (1d20+8=13, 1d10+4=7)
Tarren the Dungeon Master
The guards attacking the male owlbear turn out to be completely useless once again. They've killed men, but are too fearful of the owlbear's claws to get in close. When one does get in closer, he gets clawed and bit for it.
Kornelius gets clawed fiercely by the female owlbear, who is wounded but not dead. 9 points of damage, Kornelius.
Sir Manfred VonFalkenburg
Round 5:
Sir Manfred looks wildly around at Sir Kornelius, wondering at what he's trying to say.
Defensive Flanking longsword attack: (1d20+8-4+2=17, 1d8+4=5)
"Blast it, another graze!"
Just how many ones for damage can I roll? Let's find out!
Janrith Baelriss
Round 5:
Janrith looks around at both predators still active and still hunting his party. "Would you animals kindly perish? This is my space!"
He fires another series of missiles, this time at the other owlbear. His badger gets its full attack on the other creature.
I'm not sure, which one is male and which is female?
Magic Missile: 9 damage.
Badger claw, claw, bite: To hit: 19, 6, 2; Damage: 1.
Ovirid Thorvirson
Tarren's been referring to the owlbear by the horses that Ovirid and the guards have engaged as the male. The female is the one you've been giving free badgers.
Not sure this isn't jumping the gun, but my action's pretty much decided already, so for Round 5:
"C'mon, Ovirid, if'n no one else's goin' to 'it it, you'd best be fer doin' it!"
Once again, he tries to take advantage of flanking and attacks the 'bear.
Light Pick: Attack, Damage, Sneak Attack damage (1d20+7=14, 1d4+1=3, 1d6=3)
Better than last time, but I suspect not better enough.

As Yin and Kornelius, land blows, the female owlbear is getting ready to bolt. This was supposed to be an easy snack on some horses and some thin-skinned humans. It wasn’t supposed to be like this.
The male owlbear knocks Ovirid’s attack aside but then the guard ‘Burp’ pokes a sword in under his ribs. ‘Burp’ seems surprised by this and pulls his sword out as quickly as he put it in and takes a fearful step back. He has good reason to – the owlbear tears into ‘Burp’ with both claws, picks him up, and throws him to the ground where he lies unmoving.
Manfred gets an attack on the female owlbear. Whether he hits or not, she’s going to try to escape but Kornelius and Manfred will get an AoO on her.
Sir Manfred VonFalkenburg
Sir Manfred, realizing he trained to fight against large monsters like this, puts a little more on this attack:
Defensive Flanking attack: (1d20+8-4+2+1=15, 1d8+4+2=13)
for a mighty smite!
If any AoO is warrented;
Defensive flanking attack: (1d20+8-4+2+1=9, 1d8+4+2=11)
for a mighty swish!
Ovirid Thorvirson
To the guard fighting alongside Burp: "Lad, see if'n you can't be fer draggin' the boy back so 'e can be fer gettin' some 'ealin'. Mind you don't give a beast a free attack on yerself -- we're not fer needin' you on the ground with 'im."
Yelling to Janrith: "Mage, we'er fer 'avin' a man down! Now's yer chance to be showin' us yer 'ealin' skills!"
Tried to post this last night, but the site failed when I pushed Submit.
Ovirid Thorvirson
"Mundane fool! I am no practitioner of divine grace! I make my own power!"
The dwarf is occupied, but growls at the sorcerer, "Ye blasted fool! I'm not fer givin' a goblin's roasted arse where yer power comes from! You said you could provide 'ealin' back at the Keep, if'n we needed it. We need it, so figure out how yer goin' to provide it!"
No offense intended, of course. If Janrith seriously has no healing capabilities, I'm hoping maybe Larjen can grab one of Yin's newly-purchased potions and feed to the fallen soldier. Nobody else but Yin knows they exist yet.
Janrith Baelriss
Whoops. It's been a while since I wrote up Janrith. I forgot he has a wand of cure light wounds. So those summon monsters were spells, not from a wand.
"Oh, you mean this?" Janrith waves the wand at the dwarf. "Well, why didn't you say so?"
He moves over to join the fray against the male owlbear. If Burp is out of melee range of the monster, Janrith will move up and use his wand. If not, he fires his crossbow at the owlbear.
{If crossbow: 1d20-1=4, 2 damage}
{If wand: 1d20+15=28, 7 healing}
Let me know which one he tries. Also, I got an error on my first roll so you'll see two in his history.
Ovirid Thorvirson

"Oh, you mean this?" Janrith waves the wand at the dwarf. "Well, why didn't you say so?"
Whew. I was a little concerned that we had no one that could provide healing, after all. Re: your summoning, that makes more sense, anyway. I was trying to figure out how a 1st-level wand was summoning a badger for two rounds' worth of attacks. ;-) Since he was the only one hitting for a while, I was not complaining.
Assuming that the other guard withdraws to pull Bump from the fray, Ovirid attempt to tumble back around the owlbear to protect the fallen and give the creature an escape if it so choose and fight defensively.
Acrobatics to move around owlbear (1d20+8=11)
Since that failed, I presume he is prone in a square beside the owlbear, which might have the desired effect, anyway. Can he stack Combat Expertise and fighting defensively for an attack penalty of -6 and an AC bonus of +4? If he can, he will.
Per Beta, he would incur a -4 to both attack and AC while prone. If we can stack penalties/bonuses as asked, his attack bonus has a -10 penalty while his AC would have no penalty. If he can't stack them, he will only use the Combat Expertise for an attack adjustment of -4 and an AC adjustment of -2. I'll roll the attack normally and let Tarren decide how to modify it.
Light Pick Attack; Damage (1d20+5=6, 1d4+1=3)
Ouch, natural 1, so a miss. I knew it was a very low-probability option, but I always have 5% chance of hitting and I felt like Ovirid would be very single minded at this point. The only question is whether he has an AC of 18 (stacking) or 16 (not stacking).
New question, stated and unanswered elsewhere, but relevant: Per Beta, a character proficient with the Acrobatics skill gains a +3 dodge bonus to AC while fighting defensively (rather than a +2 dodge bonus). I don't see where they define what determines whether you are proficient in a skill or not. If we mimic the 3.5 rules, I think Ovirid would be proficient (+5 from ranks and class bonus) but not if we literally require 5 ranks in the skill in question.

I would say that Ovirid gains +3 as 5 ranks would include the class bonus. The class bonus was designed to replace ranks initially given at first level, so I'm fine with it.
In answer to your other question "Dodge bonuses stack with each other, unlike most types of bonuses" (p. 91) and "The important aspect of bonus types is that two bonuses of the same type don’t generally stack. With the exception of dodge bonuses, most circumstance bonuses, and racial bonuses, only the better bonus of a given type works (see Combining Magical Effects)" (p. 156).

Thanks for the confirmation - I will play it that way going forward.

Yeah, I knew dodge bonuses stack. The question was more whether I could use Combat Expertise and fighting defensively at the same time. I'm assume from your response that you see no problem with it.
OK, to clean up the mess made a couple of posts back:
Ovirid will attempt (and fail) to tumble around the owlbear - let's say clockwise - hoping to put himself on the same side as the fallen soldier and allow the creature to back away if it chooses.
Having fallen prone in a square next to the beast, he will maneuver onto his back and continue to fight as best he can while using every trick he knows to block the monster's talons and beak. His attack fails pitifully (rolled a natural 1) and his AC becomes 19 for one round.
Breakdown of penalties and bonuses incurred:
Total attack bonus(penalty): -5
Total AC: 19
I think that's everything. :-P

Round 6
Sir Manfred turns and charges at the other Owlbear.
Charge Longsword attack: (1d20+8+2+1=27, 1d8+4+2=12)
"Hah! Have at thee monster!"
Janrith Baelriss
The spell is a nice touch, also. It seems pertinent - will Ovirid be affected by the Grease if or when he attempts to stand or flee?
The target area is 10x10 feet, so it occupies the space directly under the owlbear. Unless you enter its space, or it moves, you are safe.
Yintarah Fireweaver
At seeing 'Burp' fall Yin's eyes widen in shock and with no regard for her own safety (as usual) she darts over towards the combat, healing potion in hand, ready to pour it down the poor guard's throat if she thinks it will help him. If he looks beyond help when she gets here there'll be some sort ofexplodey spell instead.
Ovirid Thorvirson
Round 7:
I believe everyone but Larjen has gone for Round 6, so...
Ovirid, seeing his foe struck solidly by the warriors, tries to roll away from the owlbear and get back on his feet.
I'm hoping that a prone owlbear doesn't have the reach he would if he was standing...
Using total defense, if possible, a move action to roll to about 10' away, a move action to stand. AC 20 if attacked while prone, AC 24 if attacked once he's on his feet.
As he stands, anyone looking can see that he's got a couple of serious wounds. "Lads, I'm not fer doin' so good. Are ya fer needin' me, or can I see about some 'ealin' first?"
Tarren the Dungeon Master
Both Kornelius and Manfred are able to pierce the side of the wounded owlbear, but Larjen's bow is useless. Larjen stands on the supply wagon and looks for more trouble, hoping not to find any.
Yin rushes over to the wounded guard 'Burp' and, finding him breathing shallowly, pours a potion down his throat. 'Burp' begins to recover instantly but his eyes remain closed.
The owlbear attempts to claw at Ovirid but Ovirid rolls away and gets to his feet, something the owlbear has yet to do.
The owlbear will try to stand this round, so Kornelius and Manfred get attacks of opportunity as well as their attacks. Please make two attack rolls.
