PbP for young players and parents

My son and I were thinking of getting a PbP game going for young players (7-17) and perhaps their parents. Anyone interested? For the first game, I was thinking of 'Keep on the Storval Rise' something styled after the 'Keep on the Borderlands'.

Human

I'm pretty sure my son would love it. He was asking a couple of days ago if he could join in.

He's 12 and just been introduced to tabletop rpg. I'll ask him when he gets back from school.

The Exchange

This is a very interesting idea. My son, who is 11, has watched me post on other PbP and has expressed interest. My experience is very limited because I just started to get back into the game. I will ask him today but I am sure he will say yes.

The Exchange

My son is fourteen months old. He doesn't seem that bothered but I did ask him..

Maybe another time

Female Kobold

This bodes for an interesting campaign. I've gotta see this.

Human

You have a taker. Son fancies being a Barbarian. Is this possible?

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8

So far we've got ...

Rev Rosey's Barbarian son.
TheOcho son as a possible
My son wants to play a fighter.

Parents are welcome to participate if we don't get any more takers.

I'll give this a little bit longer before posting more information.

Human

Parents sound as if they're going to be filling the non-fighty spots. Son's other preferred option is his favourite class, the Monk.

Rev Rosey wrote:

perhaps you could help him to make a Barbarian/monk character as he advances in levels

like a Barbarian that learns hand to hand on his own

or if starting with the monk class, have him as a wildboy who encounters an old monk in the wilds, the monk may have sought out the seclusion of the wilds for training purposes or otherwise (hehe, maybe wildboy attacks him and gets knocked out sorta thing), then the monk takes the wildboy in and teaches him the skills of a monk?

anyways i think this is a great idea for a pbp game and i will be followin this as it unfolds.

Human

He would love that. I'll suggest it to him. Thanks!

The best way would be start off as a monk (Lawful alignment) - roleplay him discovering inner rage (change to non-lawful alignment), and then change barbarian after however many levels. He can't advance as a monk again but he doesn't lose any monk abilities, and gets barbarian abilities as he advances.

If he started as a barbarian, he would lose the ability to rage once he switched to monk (as he has to become a lawful alignment).

That sounds like a really appealling combination. I can just see him having a ton of destructive fun that way.

It would be insanely powerful in melee. But a tricky combo to pull off, roleplaying-wise.

It would make a great villain, though...

"You have dishonoured the Shaolin temple, by giving into your anger."

"Old fool! You shall feel the power of my rage!" (then proceeds to be scary with flurry of blows plus rage)

I'm not letting him read this. It will only give him ideas about how to destroy his PE teacher.

you know, i just remembered a TV series about some wolf-boy, think his name was Lobo, he had heighten senses, agility, and what not, so go for it! :)

I can actually see him saying it exactly like that as well...

So can I. That's what worries me.

Trust me. He will.

Here's what I'm thinking:

THE CAMPAIGN:

Keep on the Cinderlands

The campaign will start out in a small keep on the Yondabakari River northwest of Kaer Maga, near where the river emerges from the dangerous Mindspin Mountains. The keep is named Kerrikan's Keep and is owned by Lord Kerrikan, a soldier who fought for Korvosa against the Shoanti but retired and purchased a small keep outside of Korvosan territory.

The keep is still fairly young and is still struggling to get established. Some Chelaxian caravans have begun to come here, some Shoanti craftspeople sell their goods to merchants heading south, many of the dwarves of Janderhoff have visited to explore establishing mines in this part of the Mindspin Mountains, and explorers interested treasure hunting in Mundatei or the Mindspin Mountains often use the keep as a base of operations.

BUILDING A CHARACTER:
4 or 5 players
PHBI classes, feats, etc.
a 32 point build (high power campaign)
Maximum starting gold
Each player may select one bonus feat from the Rise of the Runelord Player's Guide.

ALSO TELL ME:
Where are you from?
Why have you come to Kerrikan's Keep?

This is a really good thing you're doing here Tarren.

Great idea.

(I don't have any kids myself, but I think it's really cool that you're willing to run a PbP to introduce youngins to the game.)

Human

Sounds like a good setting Tarren. Look forward to hearing more. Monk/Barbarian total destruction machine looking forward as well.

My son (8) has been playing mini's with me for the last year or so he'd love to join...he just made his first official character last week! A human monk, he's been begging me to since seeing me make up characters, And I was going to run him through a 3.5ified B2 (in my homebrew) called Murx keep. Let me know the creation specs if there's still a slot! or I could port his monk over..someone already potentially claimed Monk (very popular with the Power Rangers set or those that grew up with that)so we can always make a new one. Great Idea! (plus gets me more time with D&D AND my son, HUZZAH!!)

I was so excited I passed right over the startup! DOH!

Liberty's Edge

Female Elvish ( Its in my ears) Mother6/Wife6

Our daughters are 5 and 2 so they are not quite old enough either but I am so excited for this PbP. I think this is a great idea and I hope our girls will be able to take part in one when they get a bit older. I will most defiantly be checking in to see how this goes!!

Human

Destructo monk isn't back from school yet. When he arrives, he's due to start faffing with his stats.

Would two monks be a problem? He might go pure Barbarian if it is, but I wouldn't bank on that ...

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8

I'm cool with two monks.

Check out the player's guide I linked to above for a discussion of monks in Varisia. If I remember, they can be associated with one of the dieties or from the far south.

They might want to come up with some kind of shared story that explains their presence here. I'd be happy to have a monk NPC in the keep that they may have come to be study under.

My son is very excited about this campaign. I do want to stress that no personal information such as private emails, name of school, or such should be given out over the boards without parents' permission. Call it house rule #1.

Human

House Rule 1 is a goody by me.

m other rogue/bard/ranger 1/2/1

I think HR #1 is a good idea, Uemala (his monk) is also at school, I'm sure he'd be cool with 2 monks.

Male Human (Shoanti) Monk 1

Destructo Monk. As yet very incomplete.

The Exchange

Count us out for now. We do think this is an awesome idea though. I will watch the pbp. Maybe if a spot opens up later we might have the time to do it.

Okay. I'd like to see if we can get the characters together over the weekend and start with a social encounter soon.

I think that having a growing keep as a home base will allow other characters to pop in at any time. Please feel free to do so.

Tarren, my daughter's 7, so her typing and spelling skills are not all that quite yet, but I'm willing to bet she'd play. She has some experience with the game from me running her and my younger son through a couple table games. I think she's played a cleric and a rogue (Merisiel!) so far, and she's seen the other archetypes. Anyway, let me know if you're willing to take on a youngin, and I'll mention it to her tomorrow.

She's welcome to play but you might have to help her a bit with character generation.

The more the merrier.

Oh definitely. I'll bet she would dig a druid as well. I'm sure she'll need alot of hand-holding throughout. How are you going to run combat for this? Sort of anecdotal, or with combat maps?

That will probably depend on the combat. Anything that might get complicated will need visuals to make it clearer but smaller encounters might not require as much.

If she could get a character together over the weekend and let me know why she may have come to Kerrigan's Keep then we'll be ready for the first social encounter by Sunday or Monday I'm sure.

Looking good. Lone Wolf is a great bonus feat.

Human

Lion of Irori reckons he is good to go. He liked the notion of arriving at Kerrikan's keep to study.

If nobody else goes Cleric, I'll stat one up if you like.

This character will be going monk 2 correct?

Just a note and I'm not suggesting any changes, but would like to point out that Combat Reflexes becomes a free bonus feat at 2nd level, unless he were planning on taking the "Deflect Arrows" feat.

We'll be up by tonight, just getting the skills and stuff ready

Sounds great.

Remember, in addition to the feats for a human and for a first level character, you get a bonus feat. If he is of the Sklar-Quah (Sun Clan) he could take the totem spirit feat that gives him '+1 bonus on Reflex saves and a +2 bonus on Tumble checks' or one of the other bonus feats in the player's guide.

m other rogue/bard/ranger 1/2/1

that's as he picked, I'm just having problems getting more than a minute or two online to help him input it

That is I'm pretty sure what he will do. It's what he's done with his other Monk and all time favourite character.

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8

Hi all,

I'm going to start the game now. We have three characters already made up. They are on a caravan heading to the Keep in the Cinderlands.

Any other characters -- Luke's daughter, for example or Rev Rosey's possible cleric -- will be at the keep and enter the story when the caravan arrives there (very soon).

I welcome other players to join the game. The 'Keep in the Cinderlands' has lots of new people coming into it all the time. Players under 17 or parents of players who want to join can.

Here is the game thread. This is where you play the game.

This is the discussion thread. Here you can talk 'out of character' and chat about other stuff. Remember, 'House Rule #1' is don't share personal information such as school, real name, email address, phone numbers, parents' credit card numbers etc. :-).
