This Tuesday, Jan. 29th, El Cid comes to DVD for the first time.
This was the first medeival epic I saw when I was 10 (1978, if you must know) on TV. I loved every minute of it. I can highly recommend this movie, even if it does have that whole 1950's acting style to it.
Anybody else see this (or care, for that matter!)??
I for one can't wait!!

I remember really digging this movie too. It probably moves very slowly by today's standards, but I bet its still good.
There is a scene where Charlton Heston (cuz no one says medieval Spaniard like Chuck Heston) is surrounded by 4 men and they say,
"Its four against one, you're outnumbered, surrender or die!" and El Cid replies,
"But I have God on my side, it is YOU who are outmatched!" and then proceeds to whip all their asses.
Awesome. I totally stole that line for my paladin in our next gaming session.

Really? Well, maybe its the first in America?
Reading from the cover:
"Now available on DVD for the first time, this sweeping, Oscar(R)-nominated epic is..........."
Unless you got it overseas, I'm thinking you've been had?!

Well, color me goofy!!
I found this on Amazon:
El-Cid at Amazon.com
Although, from the reviews, it seems to be a really crappy version. Lord, I do hope this is the one you didn't get!! :-)

Its a european DVD I bought, I'm sure the one I got hasn't been enhanced etc with not much in extras so maybe they are doing a remastered version etc like Cleopatra and so on.
Anyhow enjoy your version! I'll have to have a look around and see if they are making a special edition etc for europe. Not a big loss for me since my copy was in the bargain bin from my local supermarket.

Ah, so it has never been out on DVD here in the States. Thanks for the info!
And, I am enjoying it. This version is a beautiful transfer, with some very nice color correction and cleaning. With my DTV, I can see some grain, but no dirt yet! (I used to work in the industry).
Some of the extras are nice, but I haven't watched them all yet.
Overall, this is a very worthy addition to anyone's collection of great movies.

I'm sorry, but everytime I see this thread title, I think of El Seed from the Tick animated series .

Basil Rathbone as the Cid's Muslim ally was a great, especially his line about how Cid didn't deserve such a weak King (can't remember the specific words, but I do remember it making me smile).
Apparently Sophia Loren and Chuck Heston loathed each other from day one, which I find kinda funny during the love scenes.
