I'm sure they want to roll out some of the "goodies".
Besides, I haven't seen anything yet that makes me want to pay for it. I'm not saying that to be spiteful, just that the whole "Character Generator and Virtual Tabletop" would be nice to see before having to pay for it.

My understanding is they extended the free content until March. That is probably (partly) because they fell way behind in getting content out. They talked about content about three times a week and have had difficulty keeping up. I don't mind the content so much but I do not know yet if I am interested in paying for it if it is going to come out so slow.

Any idea or info on why it's still open/free of charge?
Maybe they're embarrassed to charge money for it :)
ROTFL!!
Also, I think they'll probably have scaled down verisons of the character generator and tabletop for free downloads to entice you in. The first one's free and all that...

If they aren't embarrassed then they have no shame. I wouldn't want my name attached to the horrid mess that is DDI. They'd have to pay me to read all. Paying for it is ridiculous.

I have a feeling that it comes down to content, they don't have any. Most of the guys that did the quality stuff for Dragon and Dungeon magazine are still with Paizo working on Pathfinder. Those freelancers still running around seem to still be getting work from Paizo in the form of GameMastery or Pathfinder titles.
Hence, no one "needs" to work on D&DI because they're getting a pay day else where.
Also, considering how many times Wizards.com crashes on a regular basis, forget about the crashing during gencon and other major 4E updates, they probably realized they don't have a web department or info-structure big enough to manage their ambitions.
Just my take on it all. ;)

I agree.
There's an infrastructure necessary to bring a magazine to print on a regular basis. I would like to say that WotC forgot that much of it is still needed for an online mag -- editors, art directors, efficient pipeline for submitted work, etc.
But my gut tells me they just don't have the time or inclination to try.
Maybe they're waiting for the full-blown DDI to come online... though maybe we'll have lost interest by then :/

On the site it says it will remain free until June, when 4E comes out. I always thought this was the plan. Am I wrong?
It does seem like there is not as much content as they originally announced. I can imagine that in many regards it is not their #1 priority considering that the new edition is on its way. At the same time, if they want to hook people, now seems like the time.
I do wonder if they haven't scaled back/downplayed their online aspirations after the negative feedback about turning the game into a MMO and people worrying that they would need to use the DDI to play 4E.
Still, I doubt that there is any correspondence between the current DDI and the DDI in June.

Yeah, that's a little weird.
Check out our free preview! I know the content is thin, and not particularly exciting, but it will be even better once you pay for it! We promise!
Riiight.

At the rate it's going (and the quality of its contents), Dungeon DDI and Dragon DDI ... or the DDI in general ought to stay free. It's hard to b*tch about free things. (I treat DDI a bit different because while it's free at this time, we were given a preview of the "awesome" products that we'll soon have to pay for.
