Before or after
If before the Sandpoint Raid, I'd say something joyous due to the festivel. Perhaps a mysterious dirge about the late unpleasantness.
If after the Raid, but before her kidnapping, a song of valor for the PCs.
If after the kidnapping, a very somber song about the death of her family.

Well, if you want to play in to, well, Humor, you could put on a song in japanese or chinese. SHe is from this Golarion's "asialand" area. the best thing about that is you can go for "mood" and not have to worry about actual content, because no one understands it anyway. For example, the third closing to Fullmetal Alchemist is pretty sad-sounding. But there's got to much better options than Anime themes.

Using anime songs, that's a great idea. I have a couple of anime songs in mind already. Fullmetal Alchemist, I love that series. You should try Death Note. :D
Traken, the singing event occurs before the event you are referring to.

I used "Umi Yori mo Yasashiku" from the anime Nadia in a fan-fic (unfinished and unpublished) based on the RotRL game I'm playing in. It's a very wistful-sounding, minor-key lullaby, written to express the orphaned heroine's loneliness and confusion about her place in the world.
In the scene, my character (an evoker with one level of bard, who's in love with Ameiko) sings the song to her after her rescue from the Glassworks, but of course he learned it from her in the first place.
The other song I associate with her, for after the raid, is Heather Alexander's "The March of Cambreadth" -- the most unabashedly bloodthirsty war song I've ever heard. It also happens to match the rhythm of the Goblin Song, to which my character had already composed an impromptu riposte during the goblin raid. I wrote a bit of fan-fic about that which is posted online, if anyone's curious.

If you were to go this route, I'd recommend Akira Sudou or any other singer that can sound like a Japanese Joan Jett.
...Joan Jett is just what Ameiko sounds like in my head.
...I'd probably just find some slow Joan Jett....

Haibane Renmei's ending theme, Blue flow or something like that.
It sounds fairly good, might give it a listen and see if you like it.
Others would be:
any song from the above mentioned series
Lilium from Elfin Lied
Tabi no Tochu from Spice and wolf
English:
The end theme of Spice and wolf: Ringo Hiyori (amusing accent included)
I'd give some better options but most of the songs available are techno, so really out of flavor for a bar of orient flair.
Good luck in your song quest, hope my suggestions help.

I realize this thread is years old now, but it's getting new posts so I'll chime in too.
If you wanted something that might represent an Asian bard that was more realistic than comedic check this one out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlz9WACLBpk
It is from the series Samurai Champloo, but was the performance by a very sad traveling blind musician (bard).
Same artist, different series- this one is perhaps even better. Less sad and alien sounding than the first one if that might turn your players off. Song begins about 20 seconds in and this one is subtitled.

Let's see...
for the upbeat parts, you might adapt something like this, tho it won't be usable as it referring to events in classic literary War of the Worlds- plus it's a straight-up parody/filk of this (for those that remember the Shogun Warriors toyline/Marvel comics adaptation/actual anime)
for the downbeat parts, how about this? (if you don't mind the meme-origins, that is)

I thought of a couple of other good ones: the Tatara Women's Work Song and Sasha Lazard's "Nobody Knows Your Heart" from Mononoke Hime.

Wow, I actually would not use any asian flavored songs.
I would use music more Varissian flavored. Maybe something like Hungarian folk music ( I liken Varissians with our Gypsies.)

Agreed, actually. Ameiko always struck me as being much more integrated into the local culture than the rest of her family, with her rebelliousness adding to that. She may have picked up some songs from her mother, but I figured her to be mostly into whatever the local rock and roll is.

Absolutely. Your idea of Joan Jett works great for me. Ameiko is a talented young lady that ran off from her "noble" roots and came back and now runs a successful tavern. She is gonna have dance music. Party music. Order some more drinks and sing along music. Certainly, there will be some gutwrenching sad ones..but I see them more along the lines of Bobby Gentry's Ode to Billie Joe As much as I like anime, and many of the posted suggestions, they don't work for my interpretation of Ameiko. Her family may have been from Tian, but I think she is at least third generation Varissian.
Heck, give her country even. Johnny Cash, Reba, or Dolly. But I just don't see the people of Sandpoint breaking down the doors to hear "Pettan Pettan Tsurupettan" :P
greg

Ameiko being a 3rd generation varisian may not know proper minkan and could likely be unaware of what the lyrics of her far eastern songs actually mean. she sings based on the sound of the song rather than the definition of the lyrics. Tsurupettan could be sung to make the local children laugh. she doesn't sing it around the adults.

Yeah, pretty neat song- scary how the vid spawned all sorts of "spin-offs" though. ;)

I think that Ameiko might sing such a child-like Tian Xia song (doesn't necessarily have to be Tsurupettan- could be any "foreign-flavored children's verse") in more of a "vulnerable moment" situation- perhaps alone, trying to summon up more happier care-free childhood memories and such if she's feeling down in the dumps.

Rousing pubs songs like 16 tonnes would probably suit the locale.
You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Pharasma don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company storehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUpTJg2EBpw
Love it. I think in general folk music feels more believable in a fantasy setting than rock, metal, rap, or any other modern musical genre where electronic instruments and soundboards have played a crucial role in the development of the style.
I already mentioned Heather Alexander; Echo's Children have some songs I might use for Ameiko, as well. Many of their songs are topical in a way that wouldn't fit the setting, but "Under the Gripping Beast," "Flatten the Grass," "Wild Rose," "Seasons of Love," "Green Willow," "John Talos' Canon," "Wedding Dance," "When the Wind Changes," "Let It Go," "The Seventh Horse," "As Good As Any," "Heart of Summer," "Common Things," "Right and Left Grand," "Low Among The Roses," "Warrior Maid," "Brown Gal," "Nuts From the Hazel Tree," "Bold Adventurer," "Mortal Clay," "The Spotted Goat," and "Tribute" would all make plausible songs of Golarion. I can think of a few of Dar Williams' songs that might also fit both Golarion and Ameiko.

I'm personally fond of Blackmore's Night. Too tired right now to think of specific songs, but maybe "Village Lanterne" or "Way to Mandalay."
There's also a group that I saw perform at the Kentucky Highlands Renaissance Festival (yes, I'm a Renn Faire geek), Maiden's V. It's a lot of Celtic-type music. Some of it's not appropriate for the setting, but a lot of it is. They might be more generic bard than Ameiko, but they're good, so I'm gonna mention them.

Speaking of rousing pub songs, here are a couple, with the lyrics slightly altered to remove references to real-world locations ("an English Tavern" and "Flanders, Portugal, and Spain"), historical figures ("King George commands..."), technologies ("Mid smoke and fire, shot and shell"), and calendar months ("...he'll die before October!") and fit them neatly into Golarion. Spoiler tagged so as not to take up too much space on the thread.
(Note that these are both traditional folksongs, and as such their lyrics are in the public domain, not subject to copyright)
Adapted from the version sung by The Kingston Trio (final verse courtesy of the Society for Creative Anachronism)
One, two, and three jolly coachmen sat in the Rusty Dragon.
Three jolly coachmen sat in the Rusty Dragon,
And they decided, and they decided, and they decided...
To have another flagon.
Barmaid, fill the flowing bowl until it doth run over. (Repeat)
For tonight we'll merr-eye be, (Repeat twice)
Tomorrow we'll be sober. (What!)
Here's to the man drinks water pure and goes to bed quite sober. (Repeat)
Falls as the leaves do fall, (Repeat twice)
He'll die before next Rova! (Ho! Ho! Ho!)
Here's to the man drinks good dark ale and goes to bed quite mellow! (Repeat)
Lives as he ought to live, (Repeat twice)
He'll die a jolly good fellow! (Ha! Ha! Ha!)
Here's to the maid who steals a kiss and runs to tell her mother. (Repeat)
She's a foolish, foolish thing. (Repeat twice)
For she'll not get another. (Pity!)
Here's to the maid who steals a kiss and stays to steal another. (Repeat)
She's a boon to all mankind. (Repeat twice)
For soon she'll be a mother! (Oops!)
Come into the garden, sir, and don't be so particular. (Repeat)
If we find the grass is wet, (Repeat twice)
We'll do it perpendicular! (Oooh!)
Adapted from the version sung by John Tams on the "Sharpe's Rifles" series soundtrack
Here’s fourteen silvers on the drum,
To those who volunteer to come,
To ‘list and fight the foe today,
Over the hills and far away.
Chorus:
O’er the hills and o’er the main
Through summer heat and driving rain,
Our lords command and we obey,
Over the hills and far away.
Mid bolt and arrow, sword and spell,
And to the very walls of hell,
But we shall stand and we shall stay
Over the hills and far away.
When duty calls me, I must go,
To stand and face another foe,
But part of me will always stray,
Over the hills and far away.
Then fall in lads behind the drum,
With colors blazing like the sun.
Along the road to come what may,
Over the hills and far away.
When evil stalks upon the land,
I’ll neither hold nor stay me hand,
But fight to win a better day,
Over the hills and far away.
If I should fall to rise no more,
As many comrades did before,
Ask the pipes and drums to play,
Over the hills and far away.
Let kings and tyrants come and go,
I’ll stand adjudged by what I know.
A soldiers life I’ll ne’er gainsay,
Over the hills and far away.

I would use "rock-ish" style music, but also remember that she uses the samisen as an instrument. I see her as an experimental type rocker, using traditional asian sounds in a Varisian style.
I do not know the character, but I recently statted up a monk who plays the shamisen. The Yoshida Brothers are excellent shamisen rockers. o-o;
Also, based on what I have read of this Ameiko girl, even if she isn't as familiar with Minkan as she might otherwise be, I think this might be good song for her to reflect her ancestry. It's "Voices" from MACROSS (acapella). It's haunting, and filled with longing. Not sure how much that would apply.

Wow, I really like a lot of the listed songs, but I'm surprised no one pointed out that there's a plethora of Shamisen players on youtube playing a fat chunk of pop culture to pick from!
As a random example of what you can find the Bed Intruder Song on Shamisen.

My party is in the Rusty Dragon and Ameiko's is there singing. What sort of song would be appropriate for her to sing in her inn? Suggestions will be highly appreciated.
From her adventuring days, I'm sure she's learned something like Alestorm's Wenches and Mead. I tried to get my Kingmaker group to make this our national anthem. Wonder why no one went along with me on that...? :P

Alestorm on a shamisen? How the heck that's going to sound... I honestly cannot imagine. It's an instrument to which ballads come easier than high-power rock songs, imo. Then again, with a good percussionist nearby, that can change in a hurry :) .
BTW, how about some blues or something a bit on the jazzy side? Speaking of the Yoshida Brothers, it seems they have something that might be a nice start - check http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2G-JHmiNhw.

UGH! The more I hear their music the more I love them, and I only just discovered them last week.
This blues song sounds like it would fit right in with the Borderlands soundtrack, right next to Ain't No Rest For The Wicked.

I've had her play traditional (or traditional-sounding) English folk ballads. I agree with the earlier poster that she's a third-generation Sandpointer, so she would be far more in tune with local traditions than with any ancestral Tian traditions-- especially since she's estranged from her family.
I also imagined that Ameiko's voice sounds like that of the late great English folk singer Sandy Denny, so I used the following tunes as foreshadowing in my Rise of the Runelords campaign between books 1 and 2...

I wrote the start of a drinking song about the Starstone today.
Chorus:
A drunk a saint a thief
Went to the temple square
A drunk a saint a thief
Went to the temple fair
A drunk a saint a thief
Climbed up the temple stair
And went where none have ever been seen again!
[chorus]
In fair old Absalom
Raised by the Azlanti
In fair old Absalom
Heart of the Inner Sea
In fair old Absalom
Came adventurers three
And went where none have ever been seen again!
[chorus]
The stone fell from the sky
And all the land did die
The stone fell from the sky
From the stars up high
The stone fell from the sky
They kissed their butts goodbye
And went where none have ever been seen again!
[chorus]
Of the three we sing
The first came from the dark
Of the three we sing
The second went on a lark
Of the three we sing
The thirds the Knights do hark
And went where none have ever been seen again!
[chorus]
